To Think You Don’t Need Carbs With Shepherds Pie?

Looking at a thread on Facebook asking for accompaniments to shepherds pie and loads of people were suggesting things like garlic bread, roast potatoes, chips, Yorkies etc. All quite heavy when the dish already has mash on top. Somebody even suggested coleslaw! ( And yes I know that’s not carbs!) If I have shepherd’s pie, all I serve with it is peas or another green vegetable.

Yanbu.

cariadlet · 30/07/2021 21:46

YNBU I'd either have it on its own if I'd made a big shepherd's pie or I'd serve it with peas and/or carrots.

Summersun2020 · 30/07/2021 21:46

Yanbu…chips or roasties is totally weird!! A nice slice of crusty bread to mop the gravy up is gorgeous though. Perfect served with green veg too.

Xmassprout · 30/07/2021 21:46

My husband sometimes has buttered bread with his, i don't normally have anything else

Darbs76 · 30/07/2021 21:46

Yeah you don’t need anymore carbs, my mum does it with peas & sweet corn. It’s got it’s carbs & protein all in one, no need for extra carbs on the side

MirandaMarple · 30/07/2021 21:48

YANBU.

HP, pickled cabbage or beetroot.

It should have peas in it! Complete meal, it doesn't need anything with it.
LivingNextDoorToNorma · 30/07/2021 21:48

I agree with you, you don’t need extra carbs. BUT my grandmother used to make the most amazing shepherds pie with homemade Yorkshires. She died the better part of 20 years ago, and I’ve been vegan for a decade, but it’s still hands downs the best meal I’ve ever eaten.

Roussette · 30/07/2021 21:49

Cottage pie and cauli cheese is heaven

champagneplanet · 30/07/2021 21:49

I'd serve it with veg, the DCs would ask for them little pre made yorkshire puds but only because they love dipping them in the gravy.

I would have it with carrots/peas/broccoli, not roast potatoes or garlic bread and certainly not coleslaw!!

CliffordMystery · 30/07/2021 21:50

I was just about to say no way should you have it with carbs. Roast potatoes etc with Shepherds Pie is ridiculous. I do still stand by that. However, I realised I always have baked beans with Shepherds Pie. Always have had since childhood. It’s not the same without it. Just that - no fresh vegetables whatsoever. I only make it about once a year though.

shangelawasrobbed · 30/07/2021 21:52

I'd have it on its own, or with picked beetroot to cut through the richness. It's already got mash for carbs, and I do mine with plenty of peas, carrots and onions in it so it doesn't really need extra veg.

00100001 · 30/07/2021 21:52

Ermm. Shepherd's pie is a complete meal surely?

Badabingbadabum · 30/07/2021 21:52

Broccoli. Yum. Why would you have potatoes as a side dish to something topped with potato?!

gogohm · 30/07/2021 21:54

Green beans, cabbage or broccoli (gate peas) but normally I cook extra veg into the pie

Carpedimum · 30/07/2021 21:54

To answer your question, I’d only maybe serve peas or another green with Shepherd’s Pie, adding more potato is unnecessary.
Btw, coleslaw absolutely is carbs! Especially if shop bought. Cabbage, carrot, dressing often with sugar.

Badabingbadabum · 30/07/2021 21:55

I don't put peas in mine though so I would possibly serve peas alongside.

Baked beans does sound like a winter winner though.

CarnationCat · 30/07/2021 21:57

I hate shepherd's pie. So dull. If I was making one (I wouldn't), I would serve it with carrots, peas or broccoli. It doesn't 'need' an accompiment but I would do one.

Popetthetreehugger · 30/07/2021 21:58

Iv seen somewhere that you should put a layer of peas on top of the meat to stop the mash sinking in ! Even though mines veggie , so cottage I guess ? I’m going to do that next time … and always with beans in our house 😊

NeverDropYourMooncup · 30/07/2021 22:06

If they need to add extra carbs, they've completely failed at the Sufficient Mash stage.

Should be carrots, steamed swede, peas, cabbage or any other veg to provide a counterpoint to the rich, oniony, thick gravy, meat and the mounds of billowing, fluffy mashed potatoes.

VanillaIce1 · 30/07/2021 22:08

I just do vegetables with it. Someone once made me it but added baked beans and tinned tomato's as sides and it was so good. The beef against that rich tomato flavour was just brilliant.

iolaus · 30/07/2021 22:11

Dont need anything with it - I tend to put peas in it - It's a complete meal

However I do like bread and butter with it - more for the gravy but I will make a sandwich out of it at times

youdoyoutoday · 30/07/2021 22:11

Served with buttered peas and carrots and maybe tenderstem broccoli!!

It's pubs that's have done this, everything served with chips bullshit!!

Tlollj · 30/07/2021 22:12

Baked beans. I’m unanimous.

Hankunamatata · 30/07/2021 22:12

You just do it with loads of veg
