To not tip the hairdresser?

I had a good wash, cut and blow dry today, a lot of length off so almost a restyle. The hairdresser got it just right and took almost double the amount of time for the appointment (time not an issue for me).
It cost £55 which is more than I usually pay but I needed to get it booked in so was ok with this.
I've come away wondering if I should have tipped as it took the extra time and the hairdresser seemed to put in the effort to get it just right but I felt a bit awkward, how much do people tip? Do you tip cash separately if you pay by card? Is it expected not to tip when its that price?

I know there are much better things to worry over but I want to go back to the same place and don't want to feel awkward next time!

Oh definitely, should have tipped if you were so happy with it! At least 10‰.

Tiana4 · 30/07/2021 20:07

I usually tip hairdresser
£2-5 depending on what I had done (so for £55, I'd give £5 in cash on top of paying by debit card the exact amount)

MotionActivatedDog · 30/07/2021 20:10

So you really didn’t just give £60?

annacondom · 30/07/2021 20:11

I talked to my hairdresser once about this and she said it honestly didn't matter and wasn't expected. Hair appointments are expensive at the moment and if I have the change I give £1. No way would I give £5.

£1?

Unless your charge is £10 that is really quite poor

pinkcircustop · 30/07/2021 20:12

Nope, I never tip. There’s no need. You’re paying them to do a good job so they shouldn’t expect extra for fulfilling that Confused

Tipping only encourages low wages.

icelollycraving · 30/07/2021 20:12

£5 is a fine tip for £55. There is no requirement to tip but I think it’s good to show you’re happy. Some places don’t accept tips by card so you need cash for that.

sunnygemini · 30/07/2021 20:14

I was going to then realised I only had a bit a change which didn't seem enough then kind of panicked because I didn't know if you can tip when you pay by card and just felt really awkward asking.

When did it become normal to tip hairdressers 10%? I've never heard this.

£1? How much do you pay? If it’s in the barber with Ds I’d give £1 but it’s £9 so I just give £10. When a junior used to wash my hair, mske my tea etc I would tip them as well.
icedcoffees · 30/07/2021 20:15

I never tip, but people who say that seem to get slaughtered on here Grin

NinaGonk · 30/07/2021 20:15

A hairdresser wont go and tell a client they think its tight to not tip will they?

I tip a fiver. I make sure I have it in cash.

If I only had a quid I wouldnt tip as that's insulting.

Labracadabradoodle · 30/07/2021 20:16

Speaking as a minimum wage employee, I hate the whole notion of tipping.
There are many low paid services where we don't feel obliged to do it. We don't tip the supermarket checkout person, the street sweepers, cleaners at the local gym etc etc.
Where does the line get drawn?
Glad you love your hair.

Darbs76 · 30/07/2021 20:18

I’ve have made it up to £60

NinaGonk · 30/07/2021 20:19

The line has been drawn though. You tip people serving tables, taxis and hairdressers.

You dont tip grocery staff, street cleaners etc.

If you come out somewhere feeling guilty for not tipping then you probably should have tipped.

PickleAF · 30/07/2021 20:21

I don't tip my hairdresser Confused it's £110 a pop - I'm sure she's not paying herself min wage at her own salon!

AlwaysLatte · 30/07/2021 20:21

I always just give £5, although it's nowhere near 10%, it's something at least. I would feel bad about not leaving anything!

Wowzel · 30/07/2021 20:22

I never tip the hairdresser anymore. The whole thing is so expensive that I feel fleeced every time I pay, let along tipping too

sunnygemini · 30/07/2021 20:23

@Darbs76 stupid question but if I made it up to £60 would that have gone to my hairdresser? This is why I felt awkward asking because if it just goes into the "payment pot" would my actual hairdresser get it like when you give cash iyswim and not the shops general income?

constantlystartingadiet · 30/07/2021 20:23

I will probably get slaughtered for saying this, but I never tip, I don't particularly get paid a lot myself,I work extra shifts to pay for my nail habit and get my haircut every 8 weeks.

Newmum110 · 30/07/2021 20:23

I always tip £5 unless I'm not happy with the service!!!!

PatchworkElmer · 30/07/2021 20:24

I just give mine a Christmas card with some money in it once a year. I find this less awkward for some reason- I guess because it’s just handing over a card, rather than obviously giving money. I do the same for my beautician.

MsFogi · 30/07/2021 20:25

I never tip at the hairdresser. I expect them to set the price they want to be paid for the service and I will pay that.

BIWI · 30/07/2021 20:25

I only ever tip if I happen to have an appointment close to Christmas.

I pay a fucking fortune for my hair, and therefore I don't see why I should have to shell out any more!

Leah2005 · 30/07/2021 20:26

I don't tip every time I go but give him a tenner at Christmas.
