To not tip the hairdresser?

I had a good wash, cut and blow dry today, a lot of length off so almost a restyle. The hairdresser got it just right and took almost double the amount of time for the appointment (time not an issue for me).
It cost £55 which is more than I usually pay but I needed to get it booked in so was ok with this.
I've come away wondering if I should have tipped as it took the extra time and the hairdresser seemed to put in the effort to get it just right but I felt a bit awkward, how much do people tip? Do you tip cash separately if you pay by card? Is it expected not to tip when its that price?

I know there are much better things to worry over but I want to go back to the same place and don't want to feel awkward next time!

@annacondom

I talked to my hairdresser once about this and she said it honestly didn't matter and wasn't expected. Hair appointments are expensive at the moment and if I have the change I give £1. No way would I give £5.
You would be better off not tipping at all, because that is a bit insulting.

OP, I would not tip my hairdresser any more than I would tip any other professional person that provides me with a service.

ginghamstarfish · 30/07/2021 20:35

I've never understood why tipping hairdressers is a thing. They charge a set price for a service and that should be that.

HTH1 · 30/07/2021 20:37

I tip £5 to the hairdresser (over 10%) and £2 to the junior for hair washing.

SweetPetrichor · 30/07/2021 20:38

I don’t tip. Well…I don’t even go to the hairdresser anymore…but when I did, I didn’t tip. I paid £25 for a cut (men’s price as my hair was that short) and it had to be maintained every few weeks. That plenty money to spend on hair without adding tipping on top. Now I just buzz it myself and save the fuss.

HalzTangz · 30/07/2021 20:39

@icedcoffees

I never tip, but people who say that seem to get slaughtered on here Grin
I don't tip either, anywhere. People are paid a wage, why do they need extra at all. No one tips other workers doing exactly the same, the job they chose and are paid to do
MrsSkylerWhite · 30/07/2021 20:41

Rarely go. If I’m happy, 10%, if not I don’t tip.

Mykittensmittens · 30/07/2021 20:41

The stylist has a price list - so let’s say £70 for a colour, cut and dry/style.

I wouldn’t pay the stylist (she owns the salon) but I would leave a tip and asked it to be paid onto the junior had she/he made me a drink/washed my hair/done a basic dry/been sweeping up etc. I always thank them for looking after me.

I also take some biscuits or chocolates at Xmas if I have a visit around that time.

Wantingtogetitright · 30/07/2021 20:44

I tip them occasionally but only because I feel obligated to. I don’t agree with tipping full stop but (good) hairdressers are hardly paupers. Why should I pay over and above for my treatment just so that they can pocket extra and almost certainly untaxed cash?

londonrach · 30/07/2021 20:44

Never tipped ..very strange...but I go to hairdresser twice a year..in last few years never. Tbh not sure when I'll return as discovered husband out re detail means he good at hair dressing..dont tell him..

PickleKing · 30/07/2021 20:45

Wantingtogetitright · 30/07/2021 20:45

Tipping is just such an outdated concept. We should all stop.

Chloemol · 30/07/2021 20:46

I don’t tip

Lovesacake · 30/07/2021 20:47

I tip if I am really happy with what they’ve done and if it was a reasonable price. I just ask if I can add a tip to the card payment and so far they’ve always said yes.

Giotto479 · 30/07/2021 20:47

I never do. I pay 150 for a cut and colour, that’s enough.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 30/07/2021 20:49

My home hairdresser is great value, she just did me and my two daughters for £40. I rounded it up to £50. If I go to the salon I sometimes tip and sometimes don't. Minimum I would give is £5.

DrDresaid · 30/07/2021 20:49

I pay mine direct to her PayPal in a salon so if it's £57 I'll pay her £60. But if she's mega busy in the salon and doing my colour but gets the junior to dry, I'll leave the junior some change if I have it.

Dreamstate · 30/07/2021 20:50

Wtaf people tip their hairdresser. Wow people have money to throw away then!

Hairdressers charge what they do for a cut etc. Your already paying them a price they have set that they are early with. Shy would you hand over more money.

One day you might find yourself in a situation where you have to watch every penny, what then...

There's is a reason some people stay rich because they don't just hand over money willy nilly.

Ohpulltheotherone · 30/07/2021 20:50

I tip my hairdresser, i tip guys who come and do work for me (not if they own the business but lads fitting windows or carpets etc). I tip in restaurants, I tip at bars.

It’s just a nice thing to do. If someone has made you feel good, done a good job, gone over and above then a tip is appropriate in my eyes. If they’ve done an absolutely appalling job then no I wouldn’t.

I was a waitress in a very busy pub, the tips were great and it made such a difference to everyone who worked there to be able to take 50 quid extra home a week or whatever.

I believe what you give out you get back.

It’s not required but it’s customary for service type roles and I don’t see an issue with it.

boomwhacker · 30/07/2021 20:51

I don't tip. They tell me the price and I pay it. If they want more they need to tell me a different price and I'll pay that! 🤔

Dreamstate · 30/07/2021 20:52

Lol I can't even process what utter mugs people are for handing over more money than advertised!

Hell why not tip the supermarket checkout person? I mean why stop at hairdressers

EsoNoSeHace · 30/07/2021 20:52

I just never knew tipping hairdressers was normal. I never saw it done when I was a girl. I never do it.
Don’t worry about it.

Gingertam · 30/07/2021 20:53

I used to tip the hairdresser religiously, but as somebody pointed out to me it really stems from before hairdressers were paid minimum wage. It's so expensive now. 10% to me is just too much and I would feel daft leaving a couple of quid. People at work didn't even realise it was a thing. I do give a £10 note at Xmas though or a nice bottle of fizz.

Scrumbleton · 30/07/2021 20:55

I tipped my hairdresser £10 on a £50 fee today. She come tot my house and did highlights, cut and blow dry for that price which I think is very cheap and merits a generous tip. She’s been doing my hair for 10 years

Hotelhelp · 30/07/2021 20:55

People do it more for themselves than the person they’re tipping I think sometimes

Suspicioussam · 30/07/2021 20:55

I think it's a shame people think a £1 tip is insulting. Lots of people can't afford a big tip and surely those £1 tips will add up, it's better than nothing.
