To not tip the hairdresser?

I had a good wash, cut and blow dry today, a lot of length off so almost a restyle. The hairdresser got it just right and took almost double the amount of time for the appointment (time not an issue for me).
It cost £55 which is more than I usually pay but I needed to get it booked in so was ok with this.
I've come away wondering if I should have tipped as it took the extra time and the hairdresser seemed to put in the effort to get it just right but I felt a bit awkward, how much do people tip? Do you tip cash separately if you pay by card? Is it expected not to tip when its that price?

I know there are much better things to worry over but I want to go back to the same place and don't want to feel awkward next time!

I never really have but then having read threads on MN and then DH saying he always does I ended up feeling bad!Especially like today when I was really happy with the cut.
Also noticed at my last salon, the hairdresser had a little tip pot on the desk so people must offer!

I dont tip (I go every 4 weeks) except at xmas and I give £20/30

CeeceeBloomingdale · 30/07/2021 20:58

@Dreamstate

Lol I can't even process what utter mugs people are for handing over more money than advertised!

Hell why not tip the supermarket checkout person? I mean why stop at hairdressers

I tip takeaway delivery drivers too, and plenty of other people.

I used to go for a cup at a top city centre salon, I tipped £5 and my stylist would knock about £15 off the next time so I never paid full price. She kept the tip, the discount was from the salon, not her own wage. My friend went to the same place for cut and colour and refused to ever tip
as it was expensive so she had to pay the full price every single time. Who is the mug?

Katefoster · 30/07/2021 20:58

I love my hairdresser and she always does a fantastic job. It's normally £95 which is an absolute bargain for what I get done so I round it up to £100

Katefoster · 30/07/2021 21:00

I don't tip taxi drivers. I only tip at restaurants and hairdressers

Winemewhynot · 30/07/2021 21:01

I don’t, I pay nearly £200 so think it’s a bit excessive to say an extra £20 on top (as PPs are suggesting 10% tip!)

MySecretHistory · 30/07/2021 21:01

I don't tip mine- it costs £200.
Never seen anyone else tip either.

SixesAndEights · 30/07/2021 21:02

Pre covid my hair cost an absolute fortune to have done, and my hairdresser's far from living on the breadline. So no, I never tip.

LockdownCheeseToastie · 30/07/2021 21:02

As someone with a pencil diameter ponytail E.g. less hair than an average toddler, who is charged the same as an adult with a full mane I rather resent both paying full price for a haircut that takes literally 5 minutes and being expected to tip when the four year old next to me is still being pampered and I’m out the door ffs.

Wantingtogetitright · 30/07/2021 21:02

If 5 clients tip £5 5 days per week over 48 weeks that’s £6k in cash tips.

GoWalkabout · 30/07/2021 21:03

Interesting, I have never been good with tipping but I believe 15% is 'normal' for hairdresser tip (clearly not from this thread). I have a steady hairdresser now, I didn't used to tip when she was the salon owner previously but now when I have some cash I do, or I ask her to round the amount up by 10%+

Zealois · 30/07/2021 21:04

I don't tip my hairdresser and only recently learned that other people do. Last time I went to her she was €60 and she seems to have gotten a promotion in the past 3 months and is now €70 euro. So I just pay what they charge which seems like a lot to me anyway. Some of the hairdressers at this salon at €140+ for a cut and blowdry.

PolkadotSkies · 30/07/2021 21:04

Wow OP I'd say that's quite cheap for all of that especially if it took extra time.

I always tip my hairdresser 10-15%. Same as in a restaurant, it's very rude not to, especially if you were happy with the cut.

Checkout staff probably need tips more than hairdressers.
Suspicioussam · 30/07/2021 21:07

@LockdownCheeseToastie totally feel your pain. I remember phoning for an appointment and they said they were fully booked, then the hairdresser realised it was me and said 'oh we can fit you in, your hair doesn't take long' an inch off the bottom, dries in 2 minutes flat, 50quid please.
I went to a new hairdresser who still makes a fuss of me even with my thin hair and I feel a lot better about it Grin

Ostagazuzulum · 30/07/2021 21:08

I never tip. Haircuts are expensive enough already. I've never heard anyone else pay and add extra on on salon I use at moment nor is there a tip bowl. In london I used to tip but to be honest, things are tight and they charge enough for a colour etc as it is

Wantingtogetitright · 30/07/2021 21:08

It’s not rude at all not to overpay someone for a service!

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 30/07/2021 21:09

I've never in my life tipped a hairdresser.

I never understand tipping rules. I pay my hairdresser a small fortune, as I do many people, why do they get tipped and not other professions?

Notonthestairs · 30/07/2021 21:09

I tip and ask them to split it between hairdresser and the Saturday girl who washed my hair and sweeps the floor.

But I'm fussy, have significant hair loss which my hairdresser does a decent job of covering up, they have fitted me where they can - decided at the last minute to have a haircut before my mum's funeral because I'd knew she'd be rolling her eyes at the state of my hair (I wasn't thinking straight) and they slotted me in and let me cry - and because I was that Saturday girl once and those tips made a big difference.

Darbs76 · 30/07/2021 21:10

@sunnygemini - yes the hairdressers gets that extra £5 if made up to £60 as the machines asks if you want to add a tip, and how much. So that money will be taken out of the cash I guess and shared with staff.

WhiskyIrnBru · 30/07/2021 21:12

I'm mortified on behalf of all the nontippers and even worse the ones tipping £1!

It isnt 1984. Minimum wage came in -tipping went out.
Staffy1 · 30/07/2021 21:15

I tip the hairdresser at least 10%, usually more as I never have anything that expensive done and I would feel awkward not tipping them. I don’t know why, as I wouldn’t tip a supermarket delivery person as that would feel awkward to me. Doesn’t really make sense.

RosesAndHellebores · 30/07/2021 21:16

Not read the thread but yes I always tip my hairdresser who after 20 odd years is a friend and confidante. She also now cuts dh's and the grown up dc.

She texted me as soon as 12th April was announced and can always fit me in at the last minute when necessary.

£150 for cut, colour, blow dry (v reasonable for London) and always tip a tenner.

QueenAdreena · 30/07/2021 21:17

My haircut costs £17 each time, I just round it up to £20.
