To not tip the hairdresser?

I had a good wash, cut and blow dry today, a lot of length off so almost a restyle. The hairdresser got it just right and took almost double the amount of time for the appointment (time not an issue for me).
It cost £55 which is more than I usually pay but I needed to get it booked in so was ok with this.
I've come away wondering if I should have tipped as it took the extra time and the hairdresser seemed to put in the effort to get it just right but I felt a bit awkward, how much do people tip? Do you tip cash separately if you pay by card? Is it expected not to tip when its that price?

I know there are much better things to worry over but I want to go back to the same place and don't want to feel awkward next time!

I tip 10% and my highlights are usually just under £200 and with a cut, it’s £250. I put £25 cash in an envelope for her every time. I tip at restaurants for good service, and cab drivers and bin men at Christmas. It’s all for good service. When I was a waitress my tips massively exceeded my wage - and they were given freely as it was before they were added to the bill as service charge.

Nothing wrong with rewarding particularly good service and nothing wrong with not wanting to either. I suppose everyone who doesn’t tip their hairdresser also crosses off the 12.5% service charges on their restaurant bills every time.

Seesawmummadaw · 30/07/2021 22:10

I cant imagine not tipping!

Wantingtogetitright · 30/07/2021 22:11

Do people tip their accountants and solicitors too?

HunterHearstHelmsley · 30/07/2021 22:12

I pay a fortune for my hair cut, style, colour etc. Why would I tip on top? I find the notion of tipping in the UK a bit odd generally. I don't like how some people's time is deemed worthy of a tip and others isn't. Also, it's a bit patronising... like... here you poor person..

I don't know a single person who tips their hairdresser or beautician. I do give mine a fiver if I have my lashes or nails removed with no other service, I'm using their time for free then.

me4real · 30/07/2021 22:12

I wouldn't tip them as I think they make pretty good money, except maybe a junior stylist or something.

ArabellaScott · 30/07/2021 22:14

@annacondom

When did it become normal to tip hairdressers 10%? I've never heard this.
Me, neither. £1 for the person who washes your hair, sure. I've tried to tip my hairdresser before and she gave me it back, said not to be ridiculous. I feel like she was slightly insulted I offered, tbh.
FortunesFave · 30/07/2021 22:14

They make about twelve pounds an hour don't they? Not pretty good money at all.
Marchingredsoldiers · 30/07/2021 22:14

Thinking of coming a hairdresser now!

FudgeFlake · 30/07/2021 22:14

I only ever do tips as cash. Looking back at my own early career history as a student with part time waitress and bar work - if the tips went on a card we didn't see any of them. I'm actually trying to draw cash and break it down into smaller chunks by buying items for less than £1 or £5 or £10 to create change now. It's also useful for luddite parking meters!

Marchingredsoldiers · 30/07/2021 22:14

@Wantingtogetitright

Do people tip their accountants and solicitors too?
Obviously not the same thing at all. Tipping is for people on low wages who perform a personal service for you. Which is why it's normal to tip in salons or taxi drivers.
me4real · 30/07/2021 22:16

Waitresses I'd always tip and taxi drivers if they seem particularly good/nice (I take a lot of taxis so couldn't justify tipping all the time.) But I wouldn't tip a hairdresser as they don't earn the same as a waitress. Smile And I'd already be giving them plenty of money.

LST · 30/07/2021 22:16

I don't go to the hairdresser anymore. But when I did I never tipped.

LST · 30/07/2021 22:17

@Seesawmummadaw

I cant imagine not tipping!
And I can't imagine tipping. Funny how everyone is different!
Empressofthemundane · 30/07/2021 22:17

I was raised that you tip a junior who washes your hair a pound, the stylist 10%. If the salon owner cuts it styles your hair, you tip nothing.

PhiRhoSigma · 30/07/2021 22:18

@PatchworkElmer

I just give mine a Christmas card with some money in it once a year. I find this less awkward for some reason- I guess because it’s just handing over a card, rather than obviously giving money. I do the same for my beautician.
I do exactly this too!
GillBiggeloesHair · 30/07/2021 22:21

I usually tip €5 but it's for the junior who washes my hair.

ribbonsred · 30/07/2021 22:21

My hairdresser owns his salon and I paid £140 for a restyle wash cut and colour. Then £65 at next appointment for a wash cut blow dry. I didn't tip and didn't feel awkward.

Wantingtogetitright · 30/07/2021 22:23

I think it is the same thing. Still providing a service. It’s all relative - the training etc that goes into those professions versus hairdressing.

I just find it all so strange.

MrsTophamHat · 30/07/2021 22:23

I also disagree with the concept of tipping. They should, and presumably do, charge me what they think their time is worth and I am happy to pay what they ask.

Nohomemadecandles · 30/07/2021 22:26

I've always tipped hairdressers Confused

Labracadabradoodle · 30/07/2021 22:27

fortunesfave but why? We all get paid for doing the job we do. I just don't understand why some professions are tipped and some aren't.

FudgeFlake · 30/07/2021 22:30

And I only do tips for decent service. I'll usually leave something that's about 10% of the bill for a meal or haircut or similar. But only if it was good. I only left a £1 coin for a manicure yesterday, which I placed in front of the owner's small child who had been playing quietly in the corner of the salon. Service was best described as 'confused'. I'd prebooked, and I thought 'I'll give the new people a chance' , but got bumped by a dear chum of owner who waltzed in behind me. Bad choice salon owner. I have about twelve billion local cousins and people I went to school with. And a very active FB account.

FudgeFlake · 30/07/2021 22:33

There's definitely a discussion to be had about whether tipping should be banned in an effort to get sensible wages paid to service industry staff. We're not as bad as the US where there's an assumption of tips, but in some ways our rather grey area is worse.

Jerseygirl12 · 30/07/2021 22:34

I tip my hairdresser, takeaway delivery drivers, waiting staff in restaurants. I don’t tip taxi drivers anymore as I get so many it would work out too expensive for me. I prepay on my debit card so avoid paying in the car.
