To not tip the hairdresser?

sunnygemini · 30/07/2021 20:05

I had a good wash, cut and blow dry today, a lot of length off so almost a restyle. The hairdresser got it just right and took almost double the amount of time for the appointment (time not an issue for me).
It cost £55 which is more than I usually pay but I needed to get it booked in so was ok with this.
I've come away wondering if I should have tipped as it took the extra time and the hairdresser seemed to put in the effort to get it just right but I felt a bit awkward, how much do people tip? Do you tip cash separately if you pay by card? Is it expected not to tip when its that price?

I know there are much better things to worry over but I want to go back to the same place and don't want to feel awkward next time!

@Tulips15

I don't tip anywhere, ever.

I am ' one of those ' people.

How unkind.
PolkadotSkies · 01/08/2021 04:11

@StoneofDestiny

I suppose everyone who doesn’t tip their hairdresser also crosses off the 12.5% service charges on their restaurant bills every time

I always ask for this to be removed. Tips should be voluntary!

Wow.

What is wrong with people?! Shock

User56439876 · 01/08/2021 06:01

I hope everyone is paying tax and possibly NI if applicable on these tips as they should be and they are not cash in hand

User56439876 · 01/08/2021 06:06
**@Aprilx* Nobody tips the plumber, electrician or accountant. I tip the plumber and electrician too. I tipped the gas heating engineer a tenner this week when he did the annual service on the boiler. I earn just above NMW so don't have money to burn but I find I get much better service in the future and they go out of their way to accommodate me next time. I know it is very much appreciated. I also know a delivery driver who is pleased with all the £1 tips which definitely help him feed his family.
All these people have to pay tax on these tips you are bunging them, I hope they are.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 01/08/2021 08:11

@user56439876 I'm tipping them, not doing their tax returns for them. That's their responsibility.

Rubbish! People tip waiters and taxi drivers...the idea is that you tip for a PERSONAL service.

Dreamstate · 01/08/2021 08:36

For all those who say its rude, shameful not to tip, a simple Google search wilmslow you multiple sites saying tipping is not expected in the UK.

So its not a custom or something that is required.

Each to their own. Like I said your welcome to tip but at least I don't act like a snob or think differently about you if you do, whereas plenty here clearly judge others who don't.

Multiple sites MAY say that but I know for a fact that Uber Eats and Deliveroo drivers need those tips. They scrape a living.

It's the way it is.

Tipping has actually become more widespread thanks to apps like those. Same with trainee hairdressers and beauticians.

Dreamstate · 01/08/2021 09:25

Well its the trut, now did away for tipping. You can CHOOSE to tip people if you want to. It doesn't make those of who don't bad people.

Wonder what you would do if your tight for money, not get your haircut because your ashamed tou cant tip. Or is it a case of well that a different scenario and its justified.

And there is nmw in this country noone should be paid under that it as its illegal and should be reported.

PixiKitKat · 01/08/2021 09:36

I dont tip anywhere but if a taxi is £8 and I only have a tenner I'll say keep the change.
I worked for minimum wage in retail, sometimes helping customers for an hour each getting different sizes etc and I didn't get a tip! So I don't see why others should when they get minimum wage and spend less time with me.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 01/08/2021 09:40

I don't tip anyone. I only earn minimum wage myself. My hairdresser owns her own salon and earns way more than me! I tip abroad where wages are shit but I'm not tipping here where people earn no less than me.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 01/08/2021 09:47

@PolkadotSkies it's not unkind at all.

My preparing a tax return for a client is a personal service.

If they tried to tip me I'd think they're bonkers, and also my professional body would probably want a word with me if I accepted it!

Blueskytoday06 · 01/08/2021 12:18

I don't tip. I wonder if I should now tho.

Sadsiblingatsea · 01/08/2021 16:03

So many stingy non tippers on here.
What I find the most distasteful is that this is somehow dressed up as a virtuous thing.
If you can afford it, tip and tip well.

Not stingy at all. They're being paid a wage same as everyone else.

Its hardly being stingy just paying the set price of the service, because the tip money is money id rather put towards something else like ousting food on the table

With inflation rising increasing costs for food and other basics like electricity, gas, water, council tax its sensible to be prudent with your money.

At the very least as a 'stingy person ill have the last laugh when I'm not crying over how I can afford basic stuff and ill still be able to go to the hairdreases without worrying over stupid stuff like ' omg how shameful if I camt afford to tip I best not go'

lol, nope.

I'm under zero obligation to give people a tip for doing a job for which they already receive a wage.

19lottie82 · 01/08/2021 16:34

I tip those who are obviously on minimum wage, but will I tip my hairdresser who I am already handing a fortune, while they own the salon, go on multiple foreign holidays and drive a Porsche? Nope 😂

YanTanTethera123 · 01/08/2021 16:40

@WildFlowerBees

I always tip mine, it's my way of showing my appreciation for her skills. It's just a small thing that's makes a difference.
Me too. It’s a small salon, I get a first class service and I like to show my appreciation. And no, I’m not rolling in money or stupid.
KarmaStar · 01/08/2021 16:43

I always do.I think that given how reasonable the price was,and the care she took, you could have rounded it up to sixty pounds.that was a bit mean imho.

Where does it end?

I’m over the moon with my new plant from the garden centre do I tip the staff? Ditto with my new perfume from Jo Malone do I tip the shop assistant? Also so happy with my dentist I hardly felt that filling so I bung her a fiver too?

It’s crazy and some people on this thread are bragging about their never ending tipping as if it’s makes them superior 🙄

Dreamstate · 01/08/2021 18:23

Lol I know, you have to laugh at their statements...'well I tip people who are on nmw...which is hairdressers, taxi driver and restaurants...' and then they ignore all other jobs that pay nmw Hmm because then the excuse is well its a personal service .....well the bin men who provide you with a personal service of coming to pick you rubbish up so you don't have to take it to a recycling centre yourself ( oh wait they dont quality for a tip) nor do the shop assistants who scan your items for you so you don't have to.

This. Not to mention the carers that look after elderly relatives, you don't get much more personal than that. How many people tip them?
cansu · 01/08/2021 18:39

Hairdressers that charge this kind of money are not working for minimum wage and I don't see why tips would be expected. My hairdressser is wealthier than I am. It would be ridiculous to be tipping her!
