To really wish net curtains were back in fashion

Currently looking for replacement blinds for my house. The ones we have are ancient and a couple of them have fallen apart recently. Having looked around at houses in my neighborhood I see that the only "different" style of blind is venetian blinds, which lots of people tell me are a pain to keep clean.

We always had nets when I was younger, they're great for privacy, and I really wish they were fashionable still. I do notice though that any houses round here with nets appear to be rented, and look a bit shabby generally.

Aibu to wish they'd come back into fashion? And yes, I know that I can buy whatever I want but... I'm finally doing my house up nicely after years of child-rearing and working, and I really want it to look stylish for once!

We rent, don’t have nets and are worth south of £150.

Means sod all really. Plus- you can’t buy taste!

I have plain voile too . We have huge bay windows at the front of our 80 year old house. They aren’t very uniform. We got a quote for proper shutters but it was over £7k Most of the houses have nets/voile in my road. The rest don’t have anything but it’s so easy to see right in as the windows are so huge.

drpet49 · 28/07/2021 08:21

The only people I know that have net curtains are over 60 years old. I don’t think they will ever be in fashion.

OhGiveUp · 28/07/2021 08:35

My neighbour opposite has very 80s jardiniere nets up at her windows.
No one cares, seriously.
I have black Voiles up at mine and I don't care what anyone thinks about them.
Go with what YOU like op, not what you think everyone else likes.

I've been in houses with those shutters and what with the extra frame etc, they seem to permanently reduce the light.

Pinterest. Some lovely ideas. I think a lot of people automatically associate net curtains with a 'Grandma's house'

I wish more people decorated their homes in things they actually like than what was readily available/fashionable.

If you pick things you like for your home, it won't look unfashionable, it will look like you!

igelkott2021 · 28/07/2021 08:50

I really don't like net curtains and when I am Queen they will be banned Grin

But it's your house, buy what you like. Fashion shouldn't come into it,.

What's the phrase - have nothing in your house that isn't useful or beautiful? Get what you like, not what you think is fashionable.

Camomila · 28/07/2021 08:55

We live in a block of flats - almost all the ground floor flats have nice voile curtains (some plain, some with a pattern) up. We have blinds in the living room and plain voile for the bedrooms.

Bigassbeebuzzbuzz · 28/07/2021 08:55

Out of style net curtain owner here.
I only have nets on my lounge window because it is huge and makes me feel like I'm in a goldfish bowl with everyone looking it.
I would love blinds but the cats don't so nets it is until they invent blinds cats cant destroy.

Bluntness100 · 28/07/2021 08:57

I don’t know why folks keep asking how you can tell it’s rented, it’s not uncommon to know your neighbours and if houses are rented or not.

WaltzingToWalsingham · 28/07/2021 09:00

We have voile blinds in our front room. I really like them. They have an attractive pattern and I can see out through them, but they give privacy and mean that passers-by in the road outside are less distracting.

I have nets, genuinely couldn't care less if they are in fashion or not! I like them and they are practical.

BogRollBOGOF · 28/07/2021 09:22

We have sheer roller blinds on the frontage. Pretty similar to a voile, very neat.
The first ones had to be made to measure and the blinds company were surprised at our request. Bought some more a couple of years ago and Dunelm do them now.

They're good for maximising light, giving privacy and can be rolled up.

Shutters/ wooden blinds are becoming popular in my area. They can look a bit closed up and I don't know how much light they block, but U wonder if they work well for hotter/ colder weather.

LadyEloise · 28/07/2021 09:53

@Acrackineverything Would you consider a blind that goes up rather than down ?
Luxaflex do one. It's a pleated fabric and is great for privacy but you can get light in from the top of the window.
I have one in a front facing bathroom upstairs and it's brilliant. Privacy and daylight.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 28/07/2021 09:58

I think it's sad that you are so governed by what other people think is 'stylish', OP. Is there some sort of chief-style person out there? Dictating what is 'in' and what is 'out'?

People's taste is different and long live that. I used to really revel in the fact that the UK was accepting and diverse.

Stand by your own tastes and likes and never mind what other people think of window dressing or any other benign thing.

I want to see which net curtains you pluck up the fortitude to buy... :)
