To really wish net curtains were back in fashion

Currently looking for replacement blinds for my house. The ones we have are ancient and a couple of them have fallen apart recently. Having looked around at houses in my neighborhood I see that the only "different" style of blind is venetian blinds, which lots of people tell me are a pain to keep clean.

We always had nets when I was younger, they're great for privacy, and I really wish they were fashionable still. I do notice though that any houses round here with nets appear to be rented, and look a bit shabby generally.

Aibu to wish they'd come back into fashion? And yes, I know that I can buy whatever I want but... I'm finally doing my house up nicely after years of child-rearing and working, and I really want it to look stylish for once!

I have plain voiles.
They give me privacy without being frilly or flouncy. They are nice and simple & look good IMO

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 26/07/2021 21:59

I have a friend who needs nets because of where her house is. She has dyed them all purple and they look fab!

PickAChew · 26/07/2021 21:59

If you like them, have them. Get good quality voile type ones that hang nicely and keep them clean.

Timeforabiscuit · 26/07/2021 21:59

I thought everyone got voiles? They're a more modern print but do the same job!

ViaRia · 26/07/2021 22:00

I agree nets are practical in many ways but I just don’t like how they look.
I had Roman blinds made to measure using voile fabric. It has a little more texture than plain nets but not as dated as lace nets. Got them in grey rather than white to make it more modern.
Three years on and I still love them.
Maybe something like that would work for you?

Xmassprout · 26/07/2021 22:00

We have voiles too

UpInTheAttic · 26/07/2021 22:01

Another vote for voiles.

mayblossominapril · 26/07/2021 22:01

I always have nets instead of blinds, I own not rent.I tend to pick the rose or leaf designs, the plain do look a bit dowdy, and buy at least 3 times the width of the window as not enough net curtain doesn’t look good.
Keep them very very white as well.

LemonLemonLemon · 26/07/2021 22:05

Venetian blinds are fine too keep clean, just run over with the duster attachment on the hoover.

Sahgah · 26/07/2021 22:06

I’m considering taking down my Venetian blinds and replacing with some net/voiles with curtains. I hate cleaning my Venetians with a passion. And I’ve decided it’s my house I don’t care what others think.
I actually have nets upstairs as they were there when we moved in and when I take them down I dislike the lack of privacy so they always go back up. Been meaning to buy some new ones as I don’t like the pattern in them.

LemonRoses · 26/07/2021 22:07

I don’t think they were ever in fashion.

Thewinterofdiscontent · 26/07/2021 22:07

Yep voiles. La Redoute do nice ones. I have plain white ones that billow like a 80’s Whitesnake video.

It’s a constant source annoyance that blinds only obscure the view out not the view in….

Gindrinker43 · 26/07/2021 22:07

I wish they suited my house and windows as it would prevent the insect hunt before bed on warm evenings.

Same here.

Anyway. Anything can be in fashion in your own house. As long as it makes you happy, have whatever

BackforGood · 26/07/2021 22:10

YABU to not have something practical, that you would like to have, because you believe you have to "follow fashion".

sweeneytoddsrazor · 26/07/2021 22:10

There was a thread about this a few months ago and I happened to have been thinking about buying new nets, not realising they were supposed to be out of fashion. So on my commute I was looking at all the houses and I would say around 75%had nets. So more popular than you would think.

On a side note how do you know which houses are rented and which are owned?

StCharlotte · 26/07/2021 22:12

I have nets at café height in our bay window. They're plain and white and I think they make the room look finished. They're appropriate for the age of the building and as much as I like blinds and shutters I kind of think they're a bit like grey interiors i.e. very smart and all but everywhere.

ShaunaTheSheep · 26/07/2021 22:13

I have very lightweight fabric roller blinds (IKEA)

I used to like the French style cafe curtains / they must be due a revival.

PotatoCat · 26/07/2021 22:16

What about privacy film over the glass?

FawnFrenchieMum · 26/07/2021 22:17

Interested in how you can tell a rented house by what it has in the window Hmm

Kanaloa · 26/07/2021 22:17

If you like them, get them. Lots of things can look nice if you do them nicely, so if they’re nice and clean and match the decor then it will look nice.

Rubyupbeat · 26/07/2021 22:18

I don't have nets, but a couple of my friends do, they aren't in the slightest bit shabby, they really look good, bright white and a perfect fit.
Put up what you like, don't worry about supposed fashion, that's just like the emperor's new clothes.

dollybird · 26/07/2021 22:22

We have nets upstairs in the bedrooms, they are plain and made to measure. Wouldn't want to have nothing or blinds up in bedrooms.
