To really wish net curtains were back in fashion

Currently looking for replacement blinds for my house. The ones we have are ancient and a couple of them have fallen apart recently. Having looked around at houses in my neighborhood I see that the only "different" style of blind is venetian blinds, which lots of people tell me are a pain to keep clean.

We always had nets when I was younger, they're great for privacy, and I really wish they were fashionable still. I do notice though that any houses round here with nets appear to be rented, and look a bit shabby generally.

Aibu to wish they'd come back into fashion? And yes, I know that I can buy whatever I want but... I'm finally doing my house up nicely after years of child-rearing and working, and I really want it to look stylish for once!

*I think nets look vile and feel depressing from the inside.

When we rented the first thing I would do is go round taking down all the nets.

I'm pretty sure your house would look more depressing on the inside after somebody's peered in through gaps in the blinds, seen there's stuff worth nicking, broken in and ransacked the place.*

Hmm What? 😆

We've got nets in our house but maybe they work because it's an older house. Pearl Lowe does some amazing coloured ones. I used to have black ones in our living room.

Terry’s do some lovely voiles in all different colours and styles. Nothing like what your grandma would have had at her windows.

drpet49 · 27/07/2021 13:26

Who cares if it is fashionable or not. If you like it, get it

MaskingForIt · 27/07/2021 13:42

@LemonRoses

I don’t think they were ever in fashion.
This. The real class divide in the Uk is between the “haves” and the “have nets”.
Ijustlikedthename · 27/07/2021 13:52

I feel the same way about net curtains and voiles as I do about Croc shoes. But I always do my house up how I like it not how others do so do what makes you happy!

Dizzy1234 · 27/07/2021 13:58

I've got voiles, they're not old fashioned, they look clean & crisp and maintain my privacy.
Go for it op

We have this kind of thing

LadyRoughDiamond · 27/07/2021 14:58

Shutters? An investment but they add value

UndertheCedartree · 27/07/2021 15:01

I have white voile on the bottom half of my windows. I think it looks quite smart.

ahoyshipmates · 27/07/2021 15:06

Just buy net curtains or voiles. If enough people do it, then they will come back into fashion.

Whinginadeville · 27/07/2021 15:08

I have beautiful nets with a gorgeous pattern of birds and vines my friend has the palest of blue voile both look stunning I hate blinds

PumpkinKlNG · 27/07/2021 15:09

Just get them if you want. I wouldn’t use them but there is a house near me that has them I assume because their house is right on the street with no front garden.

ShowOfHands · 27/07/2021 15:15

After reading this thread, I had a wander through my village. Most people have nets or voiles. All of our neighbours do, and they all own and maintain their properties.

I like them. Mine would look odd in a new build I suppose as they're rather ornate but my house is a 100yrs old, largely in an arts and crafts style and they look great.

ShinglesOuch · 27/07/2021 15:16

I'm in a bungalow with the bedroom by the front path - the postman etc all walk past the window each day.

I have linen voiles, which do the job without making it look like granny's house

Somanysocks · 27/07/2021 15:17

I give not a stuff, they keep the flies out, they let the light in and stops all you buggers from looking in my windows.

CocktailOnion · 27/07/2021 15:57

I have nets , I tried voiles but thought they looked like cheap sheets up at my windows.

IBelieveInAThingCalledScience · 27/07/2021 16:18

It's such an odd British hang-up and totally incomprehensible to me (mainland European).

They are airy, provide privacy without blocking much needed light and can be super tasteful, when plain and well fitted.

Even British royal residences use them.

RiverSkater · 27/07/2021 17:12

What about opaque blinds? They look nice and neat.

The wooden blinds are everywhere. I'm not tempted as we like to hang stuff in the windows, at the moment it's some crafts by my children but sometimes it's decals and seasonal stuff to entertain children as they past by our house.

RiverSkater · 27/07/2021 17:14

I think I mean semi sheer blinds! Smile

Blossomtoes · 27/07/2021 22:43

I can’t imagine how dark black voiles must make a room. White ones cut out too much light for my liking but we haven’t got much choice.

Skysblue · 27/07/2021 23:07

We keep having this conversation! We have a room with annoying shape bay window and the curtains are usually shut for privacy. Blinds don’t work because of the window shape. I think we’ll get net curtains eventually but they’ll look so dated 🙈

toconclude · 27/07/2021 23:50

Fashion is just a chain. Like nets? Get em and get over it.

househousehousefox · 27/07/2021 23:52

yabu and ill see you next Tuesday

toconclude · 27/07/2021 23:52

Life's too bloody short to care about fashion which will change in a year or two anyway. I've no patience for it.
