To really wish net curtains were back in fashion

Currently looking for replacement blinds for my house. The ones we have are ancient and a couple of them have fallen apart recently. Having looked around at houses in my neighborhood I see that the only "different" style of blind is venetian blinds, which lots of people tell me are a pain to keep clean.

We always had nets when I was younger, they're great for privacy, and I really wish they were fashionable still. I do notice though that any houses round here with nets appear to be rented, and look a bit shabby generally.

Aibu to wish they'd come back into fashion? And yes, I know that I can buy whatever I want but... I'm finally doing my house up nicely after years of child-rearing and working, and I really want it to look stylish for once!

I have nets. Didn't even know they were "old fashioned" until coming on here. I'm in my early 30s. That whole window dressing trend has completely flown over my head.
In any case tbh, I really don't care. They're practical and good for privacy. Imo, Voiles are just fancy nets, and the ones without patterns and pretty see through anyway. Blinds are ok, but don't let the light in as well as nets.
Just get what you fancy and suits your needs.

Firstly, apologies if I came across as judgemental re rented properties. There are 3 x rented houses on our small street and the landlords are all useless at maintaining them;. Grass goes uncut, weeds left to grow up between cobbles; broken glass not replaced etc. No problem with the occupants, rather the useless owners.

Will look at voiles, if I can find some really white ones I think I'll go for them. Or ones with silver thread through could be nice. Thanks for all the suggestions!

I love nets and will 100% buy them for my house when we finally buy

Seesawmummadaw · 27/07/2021 00:24

Bless you op! You really tried hard to sound hip and trendy but failed awfully because of how judgmental you are.
Try again tomorrow after a little nap.

AddsVsGeorgs · 27/07/2021 00:30

They do nice white but patterned voiles in John lewis

Dementedswan · 27/07/2021 00:31

Sorry but it's not the landlords job to cut grass, never ever have I heard that! It's the tenants job yo upkeep the garden. The landlord has overall responsibility for building maintenance etc. But they are not expected to mow grass 🙄

I saw some lovely black lacey nets on amazon a while back, and ordered a sample.
They're really lovely, but I can't expect my boy to have a lacey window and I'd promised myself matching windows.

Tittyfilarious81 · 27/07/2021 00:49

I love net curtains I've always had them I don't care if they are fashionable or not they are great for privacy .

Freddiefox · 27/07/2021 01:02

Can’t really see what the difference between voiles and nets are to be honest, other than a thicker thread. They are the same thing.

Try day/night blinds.
But if you like nets go for it.

Mandalay246 · 27/07/2021 01:31

Plenty of people have voiles and they look nice. However, not having something you like simply because of "fashion" is just silly.

HelgaDownUnder · 27/07/2021 01:48

Nets may not be trendy, but they are readily available, so someone must be buying them.
The trend is towards plainer styles, rather than the flouncy florals of yesteryear.
Why do you need permission from the fashion police to buy curtains? I hate venetians.

MorriseysGladioli · 27/07/2021 02:07

Nets are simple to keep clean, too.
Whip em down, wash em, put em back up.

Sweetpeasaremadeofcheese · 27/07/2021 02:18

I prefer nets. A nice plain sheer net adds nice texture to the room much like a rug, and allows all the beautiful sunlight to stream through.

PinkPlantCase · 27/07/2021 02:38

I think nets look vile and feel depressing from the inside.

When we rented the first thing I would do is go round taking down all the nets.

GerardWay123 · 27/07/2021 02:38

Shutters.

MorriseysGladioli · 27/07/2021 02:39

I think nets look voile.

You can get some really lovely nets or voile curtains in different colours now..There are loads on the curtains web sites. I live in an old terraced cottage, and I have a few nets up. They are easy to hang these days, with tension rods, not like the old days, with some wire and hooks to screw in.

choli · 27/07/2021 03:15

I think nets look voile.

lollipoprainbow · 27/07/2021 04:56

I rent but I don't have grubby net curtains Hmm

AMCoffeePMWine · 27/07/2021 05:00

I cannot see the difference between nets and voile. What’s the difference?

Feather12 · 27/07/2021 05:04

Nets are from the 1960s and Voiles are from the 1990s. Hope that has cleared that up for you.
ohthatbloodycat · 27/07/2021 07:05

Nets are the epitome of bad taste. Voiles are fine.

LemonRoses · 27/07/2021 07:46

Voile is a net curtain with a Frenchism to sound more aspiring. A bit like a serviette.
Nets are horrid but I guess if your house is directly onto a pavement with no front garden space, serve some purpose if you are privacy obsessed.

brokenbiscuitsx · 27/07/2021 07:59

I don’t know how but some net curtains look old fashioned and some (more voile like) look modern.

I really need those floor length voiles for our French windows so we can have the doors open without getting flies in the house!!

@sweeneytoddsrazor

There was a thread about this a few months ago and I happened to have been thinking about buying new nets, not realising they were supposed to be out of fashion. So on my commute I was looking at all the houses and I would say around 75%had nets. So more popular than you would think.

On a side note how do you know which houses are rented and which are owned?

Yes, same here!
