To really wish net curtains were back in fashion

Currently looking for replacement blinds for my house. The ones we have are ancient and a couple of them have fallen apart recently. Having looked around at houses in my neighborhood I see that the only "different" style of blind is venetian blinds, which lots of people tell me are a pain to keep clean.

We always had nets when I was younger, they're great for privacy, and I really wish they were fashionable still. I do notice though that any houses round here with nets appear to be rented, and look a bit shabby generally.

Aibu to wish they'd come back into fashion? And yes, I know that I can buy whatever I want but... I'm finally doing my house up nicely after years of child-rearing and working, and I really want it to look stylish for once!

Our blinds came with our house but we had voiles in our previous house and they were lovely and modern looking.

StoneofDestiny · 26/07/2021 22:32

Venetians are easy to clean with the right thing - a Venetian blind cleaner from Lakeland I believe - a doddle. I do have the big slatted ones like shutters though - great for extra security (and repelling heat in summer).

I have voiles but I’m one of those whispers renters 🙄 so probably not what you’re after!

wordsareveryunnecessary · 26/07/2021 22:35

I have nets from Next. They look lovely and we have privacy

JudgeJ · 26/07/2021 22:40

@PickAChew

If you like them, have them. Get good quality voile type ones that hang nicely and keep them clean.
Voiles should always have a weighted hemline, if they're not or you're making your own, which is dead easy, you can buy lengths of weighted cord to slip into the hem.
Gingernaut · 26/07/2021 22:49

Fuck fashion. Get nets if you want them.

We've got market traders selling brightly coloured nets, some with gold metallic threads - they look lovely when they're up.

minatrina · 26/07/2021 22:51

I unashamedly love proper lacy net curtains! Retro vibes and good for privacy, I can't argue with that Smile

I have nets at café height in our bay window

Yes me too, mine are cream and look like lace. They match the room on the inside and the house on the outside. Not at all frumpy, old fashioned or dated.

Clearthinking · 26/07/2021 23:00

Voiles are nice. A friend once laughed at the neighbouring houses and asked why they all look like a drs surgery (only one on our road without vertical blinds)

ViciousJackdaw · 26/07/2021 23:39

Homeowner here, I've got voiles. As an aside, don't you think it's a bit rich to slag off the 'rented' and 'shabby' houses when you freely admit your own blinds are falling apart?

DrCoconut · 26/07/2021 23:41

😂 @Thewinterofdiscontent that video was on tv last night, assuming I'm thinking of the same one.

nancy75 · 26/07/2021 23:43

I’ve bought nets for a massive window in my dining room - quite heavy lace ones. I have them so they fit rather than how my Nan used to have them 3 x the size of the window & bunched up. I really like them!

Nets are just about hideous enough to make a comeback in the next few years I think..I have vertical blinds and they are horrid.

user16395699 · 26/07/2021 23:50

@BackforGood

YABU to not have something practical, that you would like to have, because you believe you have to "follow fashion".
Yep, it's a bit tragic.
tallduckandhandsome · 26/07/2021 23:51

Volley net curtains 😂

I have plain volie (😃) curtains, I love them. Lots of people look into my living room as our drive is not wide, so they give much needed privacy but aren’t fussy. They also wash very well and come up white.

I like tye look of plantation shutters but I expect they’re 💰💰💰

spotcheck · 26/07/2021 23:52

Cafe length, using good linen fabric + plant shelf on top.
It looks very good 😊

Losttheequipment · 26/07/2021 23:53

I have a plain voile, at least I think that’s what it is, in the living room. I’m right on the road so I need it for privacy. I like it a lot better than a blind. Next door have the coating on the bottom half of the window. I don’t know what it’s like from the inside, but it looks shit from the outside!

I have nets in the front window. Blinds wouldn't suit the house at all. and I'm too poor
