Would a £50 McDonalds voucher encourage people to have the jab?

KhalliWhalli · 25/07/2021 18:46

This is my colleague’s proposed solution to the issue of anti-vaxxers and others who don’t want to have the jab. He figures that as these people are generally of low intelligence, they fit the demographic of people who eat McDonald’s. Ergo if you bribe them with a £50 McDonald’s voucher at the time of vaccination, you would have hordes of people turning up for their jab.

He has a professional interest in this, so I have given it a bit more thought than I would usually.

I dunno, what do you guys think?

If you can demonstrate that groups with lower vaccine take-up are of lower socio-economic status and you can demonstrate McDonalds is popular in this cohort and you want to use a financial incentive to increase take-up then it might be a winner.

Obviously the middle classes will be HORRIFIED. As will anyone who's skint who thinks they're too posh for Maccy Ds. I can see them getting all fired up on here already.

That's the problem with public health initiatives. You'll always offend someone Grin

RampantIvy · 25/07/2021 20:15

I think it would hit a certain demographic

Pixxie7 · 25/07/2021 20:24

Somebody on the news suggested a £250 which I think would be more of an incentive but personally think we shouldn’t be bribing anyone.

TSSDNCOP · 25/07/2021 20:25

£50 of Johnny B vouchers would nail a certain immediate demographic Wink

Canigooutyet · 25/07/2021 20:25

It would make more sense to bribe people with a smart phone.

Ilovechinese · 25/07/2021 20:33

I dont want the jab and a McDonalds definitely would mould not persuade me to have it! In vegetarian and also like to eat healthily and take care if myself as do most people who dont want the jab. All the people who could be persuaded by food have most likely already took it as they were giving out free donuts. Also when I saw people queing up outside my doctors first the jab most looked unhealthy including a woman who looked morbidly obese. She was easily 20 stone! I even said to my friend she would be better off joining a gym and losing some weight than taking a vaccine as it's well known the obese are most at risk from covid (and all other illnesses and heart disease too)

Ilovechinese · 25/07/2021 20:33

*would not

You should have told the fat cow that. She must be oblivious, as losing 10 stone is such a simple task, so why on earth had she not done it yet?! Unbelievable, isn't it?

And no, most people who don't want the jab do not have that opinion cause they are health freaks, it's because they are either afraid of death (misguided at 16 in 1 million risk of clots) or they have been convinced by shit on the internet that it hasn't had enough testing or that covid is fake anyway. What a hilariously dumb thing to say.

Absolutely, she should’ve turned down the vaccine and just concentrated on losing weight. I’m sure she would’ve managed to shift multiple stones in a far speedier timeframe than the vaccine would’ve taken to start working.
MrsSkylerWhite · 25/07/2021 20:55

Patronising.
(Not the payment bit which I understand has encouraged vaccination uptake elsewhere, the McDonalds bit(.

fuzzyduck1 · 25/07/2021 20:56

Are they thinking along the lines of if you give blood you get a cup of tea and a biscuit after?

I’ve been jabbed I want a voucher :)
And
I didn’t even get a sticker :(

Kendodd · 25/07/2021 21:01

Where does he get the impression it's low intelligent people that haven't been jabbed?

I have read there is evidence to support this though. Or well, lower education are less likely to have the vaccine.

As for young people not having the vaccine I think this is more down to the fact they can't be bothered (not completely irrational imo) rather than are worried the vaccine is dangerous. Cash incentives work and have been shown to improve all sorts of things, even breastfeeding rates, I'm sure if you gave young people £10 in cash more would show up.

🤣🤣🤣
Some people are so stupid.
And by 'some' I mean your colleague
But thank you for such an entertaining post - it made my day

Ilovechinese · 25/07/2021 21:04

Okay it wouldn't be easy to lose that much weight I know that, but why give people unhealthy incentives to take a vaccine. Also as for the vaccine working, people can still get it and still spread it and a lot of people who have been double jabbed are ending up in hospital with covid so I dont think its that effective.

Megan2018 · 25/07/2021 21:05

DH isn’t vaccinated due to refusing to address his needle phobia. You could offer him £10m and he wouldn’t do it.

I am a double jabbed, highly educated snob with a senior job. I bloody love McD’s and would sell my granny for a chicken nugget sharebox…..

Ilovechinese · 25/07/2021 21:06

Oh and nothing and no amount of money or food would make me take that vaccine

SupermanWithTheGreyHair · 25/07/2021 21:07

Being as the reason I’m not having it is that I don’t agree with the animal testing used in development of the vaccine, as a vegan, no this wouldn’t do it for me.

Your ‘colleague’ sounds like a complete twat.

OurChristmasMiracle · 25/07/2021 21:10

With the current obesity crisis I think offering a £50 fast food voucher is unwise. It’s the government endorsing these type of foods for the sake of a vaccine to “protect your health”

I’m already vaccinated but I’ll happily take a £50 Boucher for some new trainers especially as I have been avoiding public transport to prevent the spread and walking 3 miles to and from work throughout the pandemic.

JesusIsAnyNameFree · 25/07/2021 21:11

I mean, the £50 could be split over 4 trips for the kids, over say, 4 months? Really not a problem for the kids to have a happy meal once a month.

Yep, people get it, people spread it, but you have a pretty good chance of not experiencing any symptoms or very mild ones, and if you are indeed so unlucky to end up in hospital, a minority are having to stay in over night, a smaller minority end up staying very long at all and a very, very small minority of double jabbed people die. This is all over the internet and I feel it's imperative that you do the research on this, as I feel like your choice to not take the vaccine is incredibly misguided. Please.

Kendodd · 25/07/2021 21:13

@SupermanWithTheGreyHair

Do you refuse all drugs?
This isn't a go at you btw, it's just curiosity.

Kendodd · 25/07/2021 21:15

@Ilovechinese

Why not?

kowari · 25/07/2021 21:17

Hell no. I haven't had it as I have anxiety around health, medications and so on. I'm the same with ultra processed foods so I don't think I could eat anything at McDonald's these days.

PurpleWaterBlue · 25/07/2021 21:18

Come and off it.

1, Colleague, yeah, colleague. You are very full of suggestions based on a "colleagues" idea and seem to find your insults very witty indeed.

2, The only reason you have not used the word "chav" yet is because you know your thread will be deleted.

Mumsnet usually stomp on threads such as this quite quickly so I would get your giggles in quick.

misssunshine4040 · 25/07/2021 21:21

@Thedogscollar

Insulting, condescending and patronising. That's what I think and I'm NHS and double vaccinated.
This, how pathetic and patronising
