Would a £50 McDonalds voucher encourage people to have the jab?

This is my colleague’s proposed solution to the issue of anti-vaxxers and others who don’t want to have the jab. He figures that as these people are generally of low intelligence, they fit the demographic of people who eat McDonald’s. Ergo if you bribe them with a £50 McDonald’s voucher at the time of vaccination, you would have hordes of people turning up for their jab.

He has a professional interest in this, so I have given it a bit more thought than I would usually.

I dunno, what do you guys think?

@feelingmehtoday Valid clinical reason = allergic to any of the ingredients in the vaccine, immunosuppressed, pregnant... I dunno, Google it! You’re the one who supposedly has the PhD.

Who are you (or Google for that matter) to decide what is a "valid" clinical reason for an adult to make a choice about what they put into their body?

KhalliWhalli · 25/07/2021 22:27

@feelingmehtoday Well, obviously it’s not me who came up with the list of valid clinical reasons to avoid the vaccine, that was done by vaccine experts. I am a merely a social scientist.

Your vaccine-avoiding McDonald’s-munching stance is beginning to make sense now...

although I have not time for vaccine refusers, I think this could backfire. and my idea of sending them all to an island where they could avoid all scientific advancements will never take off. Some places are having lottery tickets for vaccinators, that might work - more positive. Free spa days.... yes i do feel resentful that anti vaxxers get 'gifts' for being f....wits but whatever gets the job done. Door to door leaflets here but I think actually have vaccine van going door to door might be good - not to force people but to chat on door stop with say nurse and then offer them on spot vaccine. or 150th person through vaccine centre door gets voucher for £200 sainsburys.....etc.

Now I know you're on the wind up.

I'll leave you to it ...

KhalliWhalli · 25/07/2021 22:31

Coercion tactics are more successful when the time between the gift and the reward are shortest.

Dogvmarmot · 25/07/2021 22:31

aargh.. btw if he is your colleague don't you both have a professional interest in it...

Frazzled2207 · 25/07/2021 22:32

The anti vaxxers I know won’t be swayed by anything.
Actually one did grudgingly go the other day when it dawned on him that big music gigs might require it this winter.

£50 in McDonald’s is grim.
I’d say £50 asda voucher would be a good bet.

Dogvmarmot · 25/07/2021 22:34

@allthestripeys

I wouldn't take the 50 voucher for McDonald's as a giveaway for nothing never mind for not getting the vaccine. I have been educated to masters level and I have two degrees. Oh and I work in pharmaceuticals. I have opted not to get it...I know doctors, nurses and several well educated ppl who have not/will not be having the vaccine.
do you do actual research or another area? but i agree, anti vaxxers are across the board. just seems a very poor decision.
ElBarstardoMonkfish · 25/07/2021 22:37

YANBU, if it’s an uber eats/deliveroo voucher, it’ll make them take it. I’m of the same demographic but i’m not as thick as them.

£50 and they’ll take it… honestly.

@SupermanWithTheGreyHair I 100% respect your decision not to have the vaccine, for animal welfare reasons.

£50 feels like too much for McDonald's. I also think it's a bit insulting! I like the odd McDonald's and am pro vaccination.
The most anti vax people I know are usually reasonably intelligent but think they've outsmarted the rest of us. McDonald's wouldn't make any difference to them. Maybe free tin foil hats? 😆

MrsMillhouse · 25/07/2021 22:39

@allthestripeys. Why are you not getting it (if you don’t mind me asking)? I’m interested in the reasons people choose not to get it, particularly if they have thought it through and weighed up risks against potential benefits

Dogvmarmot · 25/07/2021 22:40

@Narutocrazyfox

Wow, I'm assuming this is a joke? Grin

If not you can tell your colleague that the majority of people I know who are not taking the jab are degree-educated, very intelligent people, generally resistent due to a lack of long term safety data. Questioning long term safety is NOT the same as being anti-vax or a conspiracy theorist.

I would myself argue that those not concerned about long term safety are the less intelligent party here. I will concede, however, that the covid deniers/microchip conspiracy types are just plain crazy!

degrees in gender studies or sciences? 30 years research not enough. Whats the data for long term safety of getting covid. Do they drive cars - that is a known risk for injury and death = i am going to guess much higher than the rare side effects. perhaps, like many anti vaxxers, they are very poor at understanding risk data.
P999 · 25/07/2021 22:42

OP, I had assumed this is all an elaborate joke. Please dont tell me this is a serious idea

BackforGood · 25/07/2021 22:42

and you give head space to the utter tripe that this bigoted ill informed snob spouts ? Hmm

fourminutestosavetheworld · 25/07/2021 22:43

I was reading an article about incentives for vaccinations this morning.

Countries have offered a free joint of marijuana, pickled herring, street food, lottery tickets, popcorn - all with great success, which does suggest that the stance of the anti-vaxxer can be quite easily swayed.

Apparently so....

Pissinthepottyplease · 25/07/2021 22:48

@LaurieFairyCake

I think it would hit a certain demographic

And I don't care if it gets us over the 90%

Nothing is going to get us over 90% when under 18s are illegible for the vaccine.
SupermanWithTheGreyHair · 25/07/2021 22:48

@SupermanWithTheGreyHair I 100% respect your decision not to have the vaccine, for animal welfare reasons.

Thank you. I appreciate you saying that.
I do try to do everything else I can to protect people. I follow all the rules, I’ll wear a mask forever if I have to. I’m sad about the possible covid passports for people like myself and others who really can’t have the vaccine, but I do understand that people just want to feel safe. Just hard when I’m sometimes called selfish. It’s a really emotive subject and I get we all just want life back to how it was.

Dogvmarmot · 25/07/2021 22:50

@EssentialHummus

I was musing the other day if, as take-up slows, the gov't would consider some sort of incentive to get more people vaccinated. This one wouldn't work, clearly - McD's would run a mile and it doesn't "go" with the anti-obesity agenda - but it raises interesting questions about what would work.

My two cents - entry to a lottery for a new flat in [London/Bristol/Cardiff/Edinburgh/Manc].

if i wasn't already double vaccinated I would move to alberta. www.alberta.ca/open-for-summer-lottery.aspx
SupermanWithTheGreyHair · 25/07/2021 22:50

Now I’m on my soap box, I will post that petition in the correct section in case it gets deleted.

And I’ll shut up now. 🤣

feelingmehtoday · 25/07/2021 22:52

So people who feel strongly about animal rights are to be respected in their decision not to have the vaccine, whilst people with anxiety disorders / severe needle phobias are not... Gotcha.
