Would a £50 McDonalds voucher encourage people to have the jab?

This is my colleague’s proposed solution to the issue of anti-vaxxers and others who don’t want to have the jab. He figures that as these people are generally of low intelligence, they fit the demographic of people who eat McDonald’s. Ergo if you bribe them with a £50 McDonald’s voucher at the time of vaccination, you would have hordes of people turning up for their jab.

He has a professional interest in this, so I have given it a bit more thought than I would usually.

I dunno, what do you guys think?

Informed consent can only be given if not coerced. So unless we want to do away with informed consent - it's a terrible idea. I have to say those I know who have decided not to get the jab are normal intelligence and not the type to go to McDonalds anyway!

Treacletoots · 25/07/2021 18:57

TBH as insulting as it sounds I think they have point. It could work.

EllieQ · 25/07/2021 18:59
Hmm

This Twitter thread about encouraging people to get vaccinated at a community event (in America) is interesting, though:

I've been double jabbed but would love a McD voucher, their breakfasts are legendary Grin

Answering seriously though, I'm not sure it would work. It's not about money generally, but entrenched views formed from reading stuff that uses skewed logic and talking to likeminded friends. It would take more than that in most cases.

Daisychaincarrot · 25/07/2021 19:00

I would do anything for a McDonalds

TheYearOfSmallThings · 25/07/2021 19:00

In fairness I would be googling to see if I could claim retrospectively.

If they made it John Lewis I might sneak back for a top-up vaccination.

It seems I am in the demographic who would not be insulted or offended by an incentive.

HollowTalk · 25/07/2021 19:00

Hate to say it, but a choice of McDonalds or the equivalent amount in beer or to spend in a vegan café would probably cover it all.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 25/07/2021 19:01

If it was just the vegan cafe vouchers I wouldn't be so motivated.

Bagamoyo1 · 25/07/2021 19:02

Your colleague is right in that it would certainly increase uptake for some people.

AddsVsGeorgs · 25/07/2021 19:04

Iv had my vaccinations but that is insulting !

HOkieCOkie · 25/07/2021 19:05

Ahh that makes more sense lol

megletthesecond · 25/07/2021 19:06

Not sure about McDonald's. £50 nandos would probably sway some younger people.

vodkaredbullgirl · 25/07/2021 19:08

WTF

titchy · 25/07/2021 19:08

You could do it for a lot less than £50! £20 on Maccues would get most young anti-vaxxers or can't-be-arseds.

BarbaraofSeville · 25/07/2021 19:10

But aren't the anti vaxxers all anti capitalist types so wouldn't eat at McDs out of principle?

I've had my jabs, where's my free Mcflurries?

titchy · 25/07/2021 19:10

Wasn't that what they did with some of the football stadiums? Have your vax there then get a free tour afterwards? It was quite popular...

Lou98 · 25/07/2021 19:10

I think your colleague sounds like an arsehole.

People have their reasons, doesn't mean they're of low intelligence because they have a different opinion than him.
Also plenty of people eat McDonald's, what's that got to do with low intelligence? 😂

I have my first jag and got my next one in a couple of weeks. I do still support people's right to choose whether they want it or not, doesn't make me better than them or more intelligent 🙄 (and I do love McDonald's!)

Sparklesocks · 25/07/2021 19:11

Patronising. Also your colleague must be quite sheltered if he believes there’s only one demographic who go to McDonald’s..

Rtmhwales · 25/07/2021 19:13

We have lotteries here. As in, get the jab, be entered to win $, from $500-$1m right now. Seems to be encouraging a lot of people. I'd prefer a $50/£50 credit somewhere but would it be offered to people who already took up the vaccine?

Narutocrazyfox · 25/07/2021 19:14

Wow, I'm assuming this is a joke? Grin

If not you can tell your colleague that the majority of people I know who are not taking the jab are degree-educated, very intelligent people, generally resistent due to a lack of long term safety data. Questioning long term safety is NOT the same as being anti-vax or a conspiracy theorist.

I would myself argue that those not concerned about long term safety are the less intelligent party here. I will concede, however, that the covid deniers/microchip conspiracy types are just plain crazy!

blubberyboo · 25/07/2021 19:14

I think your friend is very insulting and of low intelligence themselves to suggest that all people not vaccinating and those that go to McDonalds are stupid

However a lot of people are not anti vaccine but just don’t see the benefit to them to get the vaccine. Particularly some young people who feel they won’t get sick and it is a waste of their time. Sad but true.
So incentives certainly would encourage them to come forward and could be worthwhile… not necessarily mcds voucher though

Babdoc · 25/07/2021 19:14

I’d pay £50 to avoid eating in McDonalds, but I’m already double jabbed anyway. Grin
Where is all this bribe money coming from, btw? Taxpayers?

titchy · 25/07/2021 19:15

@Sparklesocks

Patronising. Also your colleague must be quite sheltered if he believes there’s only one demographic who go to McDonald’s..
It says nothing of the demographic of Macdinalds at all Hmm

Let's say for example that 90% of young people eat at MacDonalds. That doesn't means that 90% of MacDs clientele are young does it?

gamerchick · 25/07/2021 19:15

I dunno OP, but the idea properly made me laugh. Cheers man Grin

Sparklesocks · 25/07/2021 19:17

@titchy the OP literally says the following:

‘He figures that as these people are generally of low intelligence, they fit the demographic of people who eat McDonald’s’
