Would a £50 McDonalds voucher encourage people to have the jab?

This is my colleague’s proposed solution to the issue of anti-vaxxers and others who don’t want to have the jab. He figures that as these people are generally of low intelligence, they fit the demographic of people who eat McDonald’s. Ergo if you bribe them with a £50 McDonald’s voucher at the time of vaccination, you would have hordes of people turning up for their jab.

He has a professional interest in this, so I have given it a bit more thought than I would usually.

I dunno, what do you guys think?

Financial incentives would get some people to get their jab, especially anyone who is on a low income. The idea of fast food of any kind being the incentive I disagree with.

The notion of banning you from a nightclub or a Premier League football match may protect those who go there, but would not be as effective.

The campaign poster could have an image of Ronald McDonald with his sleeve rolled up ready for his jab, with a £50 voucher in his other hand, with the words: ‘Roll Up! Roll Up! Come and get your McJab!’

You don't win hearts and minds with salad.

prettyLittlefool · 25/07/2021 19:28

I wouldn't be too insulted connecting intelligence to choice of food. This is well documented as valid

Canigooutyet · 25/07/2021 19:30

Nope. I won't be bribed or coerced into doing things I don't want to do.

What is your colleague basing intelligence on? IQ? Education? Job status?

Your friend sounds like a horrible snob.

I was musing the other day if, as take-up slows, the gov't would consider some sort of incentive to get more people vaccinated. This one wouldn't work, clearly - McD's would run a mile and it doesn't "go" with the anti-obesity agenda - but it raises interesting questions about what would work.

My two cents - entry to a lottery for a new flat in [London/Bristol/Cardiff/Edinburgh/Manc].

Where does he get the impression it's low intelligent people that haven't been jabbed? Also where does he get the impression low intelligent people are McDonald fans.? Your partner sounds very judgemental.

From my understanding of news reports it was mainly the bame community that was mainly unvaccinated. I doubt very much they have/all are low intelligence, I think this is more down to both language and cultural differences.
The other group was the 18s-25s, again most are low intelligence, most have decided that the jab won't stop covid, they are at the age where the jab is riskier to them. All sounds informed intelligent responses to me

Headsinsand · 25/07/2021 19:37

Giving people a choice between Pfizer/AZ would probably do more to improve numbers than a McD voucher..

ClemDanFango · 25/07/2021 19:39

Me eat mcnuggies me also double jab me no stoopid.

Ducksurprise · 25/07/2021 19:41

I know plenty that have been vaccinated to make going abroad easier.

And to all those that mock surprise at how to spend £50 at McDonald's, a meal is now over between £4.99 and £6.19 so only two visits for a family of four (I know as we visited today and I was Shock about how expensive it has become)

00100001 · 25/07/2021 19:42

@allthestripeys

I wouldn't take the 50 voucher for McDonald's as a giveaway for nothing never mind for not getting the vaccine. I have been educated to masters level and I have two degrees. Oh and I work in pharmaceuticals. I have opted not to get it...I know doctors, nurses and several well educated ppl who have not/will not be having the vaccine.
Well they can thank the uneducated masses for protecting them through herd immunity.

We're all obviously so fucking stupid because we had the jab and aren't as well informed and clever as yooooooou.

Ducksurprise · 25/07/2021 19:42

Although my money is on the gov nudge unit doing market research.

I’d say you’re sort of correct in that low IQ tends to correlate with poorer health outcomes (as well as low economic outcomes etc)

But that is not the same as saying that people who eat at McDonalds are of low intelligence. The latter is a sweeping generalisation based on no actual research whatsoever.

P999 · 25/07/2021 20:02

A better idea might be to start with some thorough research on the many VARIOUS reasons why people are not having it. And then focusing on public info from trusted sources. Hilarious idea that a public health campaign should think a good solution is to encourage eating junk food. Sounds a bit like something from 'the thick if it'. Is your friend Armando Iannucci?

JesusIsAnyNameFree · 25/07/2021 20:04

Sadly, I think he is correct.

Lockheart · 25/07/2021 20:04

I'd be very miffed if they're not backdated. I'd like a £50 voucher please (post-graduate degree, two professional financial qualifications, may lack common sense sometimes but certainly not unintelligent Wink)!

isadoradancing123 · 25/07/2021 20:06

Nothing is an incentive for people who are genuinely scared of blood clots or long term effects

AutumnOrange · 25/07/2021 20:06

At my place of we were offered a financial incentive to have the first jab and also the second. I was surprised by the amount of people who decided to get the vaccine once they were offered money.

AutumnOrange · 25/07/2021 20:06

*work

JesusIsAnyNameFree · 25/07/2021 20:08

That said, I would go for a nugget right now. Being a child of the 90's, McDonald's was very much the once in a blue moon treat, and don't even get me started on the McDonald's parties!
Do they still have those ball pits?

OldTinHat · 25/07/2021 20:10

A McVaccie with large fries coming up!
