Is the Arizona recount still going on? I can't find any recent information on it.

DuncinToffee · 11/08/2021 20:53

Yes, thank you. I was wondering if it would somehow tie in with Friday 13th Grin

Such a waste of money and people's time
Worrying from that article
Terán said the Arizona Republican state senators set a dangerous precedent of second-guessing any election in which they aren't satisfied with the results.

Of course.

Ex-P now claims Biden is wrong to leave Afghanistan, but he was very much on board before, and he wanted to leave sooner.
Plus, for 4 years he did nothing to help secure Afghanistan against the Taliban.
I feel sorry for the population.

I'm of two minds and, I admit, a bit uneducated of the 'ins and outs' of our being there.

On one hand, if we had a hand in creating the situation we need to do more to fix it (if it's fixable). I honestly don't know if the Afghani Govt of the time asked us to come in and help or if we just pulled another 'Iraq' and found justification and then pressured their govt to allow us in.

On the other hand, regardless of how we got there, too many US military lives have been lost for too little gain. If the Forces are not going to be allowed to 'win' this war, then they need to get out before more troops are killed.

It was similar in Viet Nam. There were so many constraints put on the troops that the war became 'un-winnable' so we simply left. The problem is that making a war 'winnable' means injury and death to countless innocent civilians and that's something we are no longer willing to tolerate. I'm thinking bombing of Dresden, Hiroshima, etc where a target is selected regardless of the cost in innocent lives.

On a more serious note - I too don't know enough to really understand the reasons for abandoning Afghanistan - because abandonment it is.

It was 9/11 that led to the US invasion of Afghanistan... yet still the West pussyfoots around Saudi Arabia... Hmm

This article thinks that China won't be happy either with what's occurring.

Joe Biden’s credibility has been shredded in Afghanistan.
But the fall of the country to the Taliban would also create a dilemma for China

Trump's 'deal' with the Taliban is not helping the situation

www.businessinsider.com/uk-defense-secretary-world-will-pay-trump-deal-with-taliban-2021-8?r=US&IR=T

It effectively told a Taliban that wasn't winning that they were winning, and it undermined the government of Afghanistan and now we are in this position where the Taliban have clearly the momentum across the country."

Nothing?

lionheart · 13/08/2021 20:06

I heard the first rumblings of UN intervention but sometimes that's all you get.

Nope. Not president. No riots in the streets. No abject apologies and resignations from Biden & Harris after seeing the 'absolute proof nothingburger ' that deranged Pillow Guy promised to reveal yesterday but didn't deliver. Zip, zilch, nada.

And as far as I can tell, nothing from Doofus as to why he hasn't been 'reinstated' as POTUS.

Roussette · 13/08/2021 21:26

Some of the tweets have been hilarious.
13th August hasn't happened!

Lostinthedesert · 13/08/2021 21:34

Of course nothing’s happened, sillies, the MyPillowGuy made a teensy mistake. The Big Day is not the 13th but the 31st!

A lomg-time lurker just adding my thanks for these wonderful threads. You guys have wit, brains and stamina.

Hello Lost.

We need to factor in the trans-Atlantic time difference here.

The day is not over yet, or else it took place Down Under and we all missed it.

Roussette · 14/08/2021 08:05

@Lostinthedesert
Welcome! It's far more tranquil on these threads since January this year! (as you can imagine!)

I just love this...
