Lewis Goodall on twitter

Republican Mike McCaul (Ranking member House Foreign Affairs Committee): “This is going to be a stain on this President and his presidency. I think he [Biden] is going to have blood on his hands for what he did.”

Rep Liz Cheney: “Biden bears responsibility for making this decision but there’s no question Trump and Pompeo also bear very significant responsibility for this. They went down the path of legitimising the Taliban of perpetuating the fantasy...that they’re a partner for peace.”

Doofus is enjoying himself

NEW: Statement on Afghanistan from President Trump: “What Joe Biden has done in Afghanistan is legendary. It will go down as one of the greatest defeats in American history!”

Of course, Biden was implementing the plan Trump signed...

I can't understand the comments about trump and Biden.

Whatever was set in chain months, years ago.... Is irrelevant surely?

What matters is where was the contingency planning specifically for this immediate situation??. That's what matters ie doesn't Biden need to refer back to any the trump team did?

Surely various scenarios are played out and in the worst case scenario like now... The slightest hint that the taliban were making gains surely... THEY start to get troops in and out staff out?

Gradually

I think Australia got theirs out months ago?

To leave their staff in this situation, to be putting the soldiers at risk to... Be leaving so many afghan staff there.
. The pr politics will be a massive shot in the arm for jihadi groups.

I don't care what trump did or don't do.
I'm judging the Biden team right now on worst case scenario contingency planning and I hope that the airport is secure and they can at least get people out.

It is worrying that it seems like the speed of events took many people by surprise, was US intelligence as well as the UK really so unaware?

TheSilveryPussycat · 16/08/2021 00:53

AIUI the idea was supposed to be that the Gvt and armed forces had become competent and strong by learning from, and being trained by, the US.

I heard or read recently, probably on CNN or in The Guardian, that Trump did not even include the Afghan government in his talks with the Taliban. How was any agreement supposed to work, then?

Afghanistan has been an insoluable problem for decades and decades.

The news from Afghanistan is grim.

Biden would be criticised for not leaving Afghanistan, and now for leaving.
Not sure there's was ever a chance of Afghanistan not being overrun by the Taliban without external intervention, but I am finding that even so, it has been too easy. As if it was somehow made sure they had a clear path to return.

My god, the scenes from the airport in Kabul...

Roussette · 16/08/2021 15:03

Yes, running alongside a jet. It's all just so awful

In the wake of the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan, the Republican Party has removed a page from its website that praised former President Donald Trump’s peace deal with the Taliban and his pledge to withdraw American troops from the embattled nation.

This statement from Trump. He has tried to delete it. From April this year.

Pres. Biden is complicit in some of this... but Trump started it.

President Biden

I will be addressing the nation on Afghanistan at 3:45 PM ET today.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 16/08/2021 17:32

Did anyone seriously expect that Doofus would not do the equivalent of saying "Jared? I hardly knew him" about his decision to get the American troops out of Afghanistan in a completely unexpected rush?
