@Roussette

Totally agree Cacacois. I feel conflicted, ignorant, uninformed and I'm trying not to grab onto the worst of the headlines and judge.
Me too.

There seem to have been two places which it is historically a mistake to invade: Russia and Afghanistan. Invading Russia causes empires to fall; invading Afghanistan simply doesn't work.

PerkingFaintly · 20/08/2021 19:37

Just watched Biden's speech.

He's Dunkirking it: "US is only country which could have pulled off an operation this large."

Which I suppose is appropriate, as Afghanistan has just been (mostly non-militarily) Blitzkrieged.

That was such an interesting take on it all. How it unfolded Perking and it shows up the UK response in such an awful way.. Raab and Johnson both on holiday at the same time.

www.cbsnews.com/news/climate-change-taliban-strengthen/

'Rural Afghanistan has been rocked by climate change. The past three decades have brought floods and drought that have destroyed crops and left people hungry. And the Taliban — likely without knowing climate change was the cause — has taken advantage of that pain.

While agriculture is a source of income for more than 60% of Afghans, more than 80% of conflicts in the country are linked to natural resources, according to a joint study by the World Food Programme, the United Nations Environment Program and Afghanistan's National Environmental Protection Agency. In 2019, Afghanistan ranked sixth in the world for countries most impacted by climate change, according to the Germanwatch Global Climate Risk Index. '

I'd somehow lost touch with these threads, I'm pleased to see they are continuing.

@AcrossthePond55 I'm so sorry to read of your DH's illness. My very best wishes to you both Flowers

Thanks, @BoreOfWhabylon We're entering the 'rough phase' of DH's treatment and he's feeling really terrible. Almost halfway through though.

On other matters, I saw that Maddow peace about the Ivermectin. I just could not believe it. Well, I could, but I didn't want to. It just goes to show the absolute lack of any semblance of a conscience or sense of responsibility in certain members of the conservative media.

AcrossthePond55 · 21/08/2021 16:02

Although, to be fair, ivermectin IS used to treat parasitic infestations in humans, too. But obviously the dose is MUCH lower, it's by prescription only, and under a doctor's supervision, of course.

lionheart · 21/08/2021 20:32

Sorry to hear that Across.

Across I hope you and DH get over the worst very very soon Flowers

Amen, and Amen, @BoreOfWhabylon

We're having a rough night so I doubly appreciate your words of comfort.

@Roussette We hope so, too. He'll be over the halfway mark on Wednesday. Doesn't mean the horrible side effects will lessen, quite the opposite, but at least it's the downhill slide.

TheClaws · 22/08/2021 04:41

Hi everyone - I haven't posted on these threads for a very long time but I'm heartened to see they're still going. I'm also happy to recognise some familiar names! I disappeared from here to take a mental health break that extended into a year or so. Things have changed dramatically since (I'm certain there's a connection Wink).

I'm hoping I'll pop in and out in the future Smile

Roussette · 22/08/2021 08:02

Across Hopefully just knowing you are on the home run and more than halfway through will be some comfort.

TheClaws Good to see you and I understand taking a break, it really helps to do that.
I shall look out for you in the future Smile

borntobequiet · 22/08/2021 08:37

And the Taliban — likely without knowing climate change was the cause

I bet they do though. Just because they see the world through the lens of faith and roam around in trucks with rocket launchers doesn’t mean they don’t understand science or keep up with current affairs.
It’s this sort of attitude towards these intelligent, pragmatic and determined people that has led them to be consistently underestimated, and the amazement at their very rapid recent advances.

borntobequiet · 22/08/2021 08:41

Love to you, Across.

On a frivolous note, I’ve sometimes pondered if Julian of Norwich would have been taken seriously if she had been Julie-Ann of Norwich.
