I'm still lurking.
lionheart and friends, I always head for here when on MN, brilliant links and info.
One day, there'll be history students going back over all these years of threads, and using them as " sources." Smile I
(It's probably already happening)
Looking in also to wave at the AcrossthePonds Flowers

I know someone who was involved in destroying ordnance before the UK pulled out of Bastion. Described it as "best big bangs evah!"

Roussette · 19/08/2021 18:32

Hi Echo

Great to see you!

EchoNan · 19/08/2021 18:41

Halloo...I'm here most days Rousette, I'm one of the (mostly) silent fan club.
(If you detect a grinding of teeth at some contributions, on occasion, it's probably me.Wink)

www.dailykos.com/stories/2021/8/18/2046795/-Donald-J-Trump-pardoned-a-cyberstalker-Now-he-s-arrested-again-for-cyberstalking

'Donald J. Trump took time out of his schedule to issue a pardon for a friend of his son in law, Jared Kushner. Ken Kurson, the friend in question, was facing the reality of potential federal charges for cyberstalking. Kurson had installed spyware on his wife’s computer in order to monitor, harass, and capture her communication—acts that constitute crimes under federal statute. Cyberstalking, like revenge porn, frequently has one goal: to control someone else and stifle them from speaking out or getting away from the harasser. It’s a way to trap and force someone to stay quiet. For these reasons, under federal law, you can serve up to five years in prison for acts of cyberstalking.

Well, that is if you don’t have a president in your back pocket who will try to give you a get-out-of-jail-free card. To that end, Trump tried to give Kurson a pass with a presidential pardon. Now, long after Trump has disgraced the halls of the White House, Kurson finds himself potentially making new friends ... in the New York Corrections System.'

The man in the truck outside the Library of Congress live-streamed on Facebook for several hours apparently.

EchoNan

I grind teeth and make faces at some of the links and reports!

@lionheart

The man in the truck outside the Library of Congress live-streamed on Facebook for several hours apparently.
Yes, some tweets

Domestic violent extremist threatening to detonate a bomb at US Capitol shared a Facebook video yesterday from Don Jr riling Trump supporters against Biden

The emerging picture of the person at the Capitol threatening to blow up a couple of city blocks is of someone who believes the election was stolen, and that Democrats are unpatriotic traitors. That is to say, someone who believes standard Fox News/GOP/Trump rhetoric. t.co/hxMz6jE6sE

AcrossthePond55 · 19/08/2021 19:22

So this idiot is a Doofus supporter. Are any of us even remotely surprised?

It's a marked change from the previous 'regime' where Doofus would be telling commanding the police to 'take him out' and the current regime where Biden is simply 'monitoring the situation' and letting the professionals do their jobs.

lionheart · 19/08/2021 20:19

Trumpy has military advice to give.

More seriously.

www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2021/08/america-afghanistan-women/619828/

'We did in Afghanistan what we always do when we have lots of troops, an apocalyptic amount of firepower, and no brief on what to do with them. We killed a lot of people, destroyed a lot of things, and lost many of our own young women and men. We never did find bin Laden there. He had “slipped away,” we were told, as though he was a considerate dinner guest in a Noël Coward play. But while our soldiers were in that country, America spent nearly $790 million supporting the health, education, and well-being of Afghan women and girls. Female life expectancy rose from 58 years in 2002 to 66 years in 2018. Leave American troops idle long enough, and before you know it, they’re building schools and protecting women. We found an actual patriarchy in Afghanistan, and with nothing else to do, we started smashing it down.'

Roussette · 19/08/2021 21:05

Some great and worrying posts on here everyone, thank you.

Lweji · 20/08/2021 08:16

Presumably there was huge profit for someone in continuing the occupation of Afghanistan.

I know exactly what you mean Cacacoisfarraige

How did this happen? How did the US and other Western countries got it so wrong? Sad

Roussette · 20/08/2021 10:25

Totally agree Cacacois. I feel conflicted, ignorant, uninformed and I'm trying not to grab onto the worst of the headlines and judge.

lionheart · 20/08/2021 11:23

Yes, I agree.

I think there are two many pieces to fit together to have a complete picture. The return of the Taliban and the fate of the people, especially the girls and women, weighs so heavily.
