Random car parked on my drive!

UftUft · 23/07/2021 20:39

dh has just come back from work and parked across the road. I asked why he hasn't parked on our driveway and he said he thought we had visitors.
I've gone out and there's a random car on our driveway! Knocked on neighbours door but they don't know who's it is. (They are really nice and we get on with them so they would have told them to move if it was anything to do with them).
AIBU to move the car and block them in?
@Howshouldibehave the op drive didn't have a car on her drive otherwise they would have blocked the op in and been able to drive off home later???
Doh, yes-sorry, am confusing myself!

Am just trying to work out if there was an empty drive they missed, or if the people had gone on holiday saying their drive could be used but then left cars on it?

UftUft · 24/07/2021 08:56

@FeatheredHope

I have to hand it to them, they are fab around here. It's not a huge area, think hot fuzz (if anybody remembers the film... obviously not the storyline, that would be grim... but the place it was set!) Grin

What an ending!!!! I just couldn't manage to stay awake long enough! As if they called the police 🤣 Howling at the thought of your DH opening the door dressed like that!! Thank you so much for the entertainment! Don't think I've ever been so over invested in a thread 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Lalliella · 24/07/2021 09:01

Why didn’t you just go out and move your car that was blocking them in at the time when you realised they’d made a genuine mistake? Or were you just loving the drama on here too much? The whole situation with the police could have been easily avoided.

UftUft · 24/07/2021 09:02

@Howshouldibehave

The empty house is further up the road, theyve seen the first empty drive and assumed it was where they were to park.

Brilliant thread, but I have to ask, OP: did the police ask why your DH was wearing a hazmat suit?

And if they did, what reason did he give?

Lazypuppy · 24/07/2021 09:05

@Lalliella surely ask why thepeople who made the mistake didn't just knock on OP's door? Instwad the called the police and made it so much more dramatic!

Yes, the situation with the police could have been avoided if the people who had wrongly parked had simply knocked on the door and said something like "I'm really sorry but I've mistakenly parked on your drive and now my car is blocked. Can you please help?"

But they didn't - they called the police and then lied.

EastWestWhosBest · 24/07/2021 09:05

I did feel sorry for them as this was a genuine mistake but why call the police?
Knock on the door and grovel.

UftUft · 24/07/2021 09:06

@LakieLady

No they didn't ask and Dh didn't offer an explanation ..

Can't believe I read the whole thread!! You are actually the best OP. You updated us, humoured us and even gave diagrams! Star

pastafeend · 24/07/2021 09:10

@AlfonsoTheMango

The police thing is a red herring IMO. The OP knew it was an error and could have let them go. The police are quite bizarre to have attended this civil dispute. The posters saying they came out because of a 'drunk driving' possibility are way off the mark. These people were not driving anywhere. Their car was blocked in.

Why didn’t the wallies just knock when they first discovered at 10.30 that they’d parked on the wrong drive? Instead of leaving it until midnight and calling the police with a bunch of lies?
UftUft · 24/07/2021 09:11

So my sister has just rung, BIL has gone into work this morning (hes police) and they are talking about the weirdos with the hazmat suit from last night... she asked if it was us.
I'm going to take them round some biscuits or something later, just to apologise for the weirdness.

Thanks for a very entertaining thread. It was only 6 pages when I found it last night! I was too tired to keep reading, one DC who doesn't go to sleep until after midnight and wants me to say goodnight, the other who wakes up at 8.

Longdistance · 24/07/2021 09:13

Just goes to show how stupid they are. Fancy not knocking on the door and grovelling. Calling the police and they’ve wasted their time.
Gotta love your hubby, bet he’s great at parties Grin

I know, pathetic isn't it.
headintheproverbial · 24/07/2021 09:13

Hahahaha. I'm so sorry I didn't get to see this all unfold last night!

Don't apologise - they were 10000% in the wrong, especially for not just knocking when they realised the mistake!

As someone who grew up where hot fuzz was filmed I’m shocked you got the police at all! They shut at 5 Grin

BarbaraofSeville · 24/07/2021 09:21

I don't know, if you live in the sort of place that the OP is describing, anything slightly out of the ordinary is noticed and talked about and everyone knows everyone, so word gets around quickly.

I've spent quite a lot of time in the Isle of Man and it's like that there. The sort of incident that makes their news headlines wouldn't even raise an eyebrow in a large city on the mainland. Milk being stolen off doorsteps, that sort of thing. Someone I know who lives there had a minor bump in her car and it was the first story on the local news.

Why do you need to apologise for something that someone else has done?!?
ForensicFlossy · 24/07/2021 09:29

This has made my morning! Especially the hazmat suit.Grin

Fiddliestofsticks · 24/07/2021 09:29

Just say that your husband was finishing up painting and had worn it to keep paint off his clothes.

Why did you apologise? All those people needed to do was knock the door. You still has your lights on (although you did turn them off when you heard them outside again. Thay was wierd). Instead, a groupe of adults were too scared to say sorry, so they called the police for a non-crime.
