AIBU?

Is this enough for a 3 year old’s birthday?

We are getting him:

Scooter
Magnadoodle
Bigjigs battery operated train
Playfoam (a bit like playdough, but less messy apparently!)
Most likely a new book

That’s it from us.

He’s getting a Tonie box from one set of grandparents and a playmobil set from the other set.
He’ll also get gifts from my brother and my DP’s brother and sister.

I always feel like there’s so much pressure to buy a lot of gifts, I don’t know why Blush

That’s far too much. Consider it this way - the more you give your child for his birthdays, the less likely he is to live in a world where birthdays will be enjoyable as an adult. The world cannot sustain current levels of consumption and almost everything you have put on that list won’t biodegrade but will still be intact in landfill when your son is 80.

We have never formally bought grandaughter a birthday or christmas present. ( Rising 2)
Just installed a wooden play house in out garden though ( Birthday Sept) She doest know when her irthday is, she may as well enjoy it this summer.

Heaps of gift overwhelm in my opinion.

My kids had parties for their third birthday so we didn’t get them a present as knew they would get a shit load from the party!!

For fourth bday was covid so no party so we got him about 3 presents.

Plenty. Who are you getting “pressure” from??

I don't think it's an obscene amount, but I do think it's enough. I usually top up with things like pjs that dd would need anyway but I think that sounds about the right amount.

15 presents for a 1 year old is obscene.

Oceans are full of plastic crap.

These threads never go well. The OP usually gets a barrage of abuse about spoilt children, and being out of touch with people who have no menu etc etc.

Sounds a perfectly reasonable amount of presents. Don’t feel pressured to do more

@Meraas No, it’s really not obscene, and posts like this just make me want to buy more for my baby.

Nobody said all the presents were plastic anyway so you’re getting your knickers in a twist over nothing (not that it would matter if they were).

To be honest I really don't think anyone else can tell you if its too much or two little as its totally up to you how much to give your child and eveyone has their own ideas and opinions. Growing up dh had one big present at xmas where i had lots of little ones.
I would suggest working out a budget based on what u can afford and use it to buy gifts you know your child will play with. Don't buy stuff for the sake of it, you can always treat the child to a day out if theres nothing they want.
Also playfoam is just as messy as play doh if not more so.

I know, completely selfish individuals, raising little Dudley Dursleys and Violet Beauregardes, whilst the Ocean chokes from 8 million tons of plastic. But apparently having one non-plastic toy makes it all ok.

More than enough.. I used to buy my children loads of toys for birthdays and Christmas and the majority of them we're barely played with.. now with the 4 of them they have a ridiculous amount of toys and I could kick myself because the money could have been better spent... you sent your own precedent for birthdays so buy as much or as little as you like, but sometimes less is more.

This survey confirmed that 90% of the most popular toys are made entirely out of plastic. www.ecobirdy.com/blogs/news/plastic-toys

It's not me that's hard of thinking...

It's not 'obscene' or 'too much' Hmm It sounds lovely and if you can afford it then go for it. We buy a lot for DD's birthdays and Christmases. She is an only child, we can afford it and we want to. That's all that matters 🤷‍♀️ Things like the Toniebox will do for years too!

Hallyup6 · 22/07/2021 13:42

I usually do 10 gifts for birthdays but sometimes less if a present is expensive. I think your list sounds fine though.

Direstraitsmates · 22/07/2021 13:44

We would have stopped at the scooter as by the time the grandparents and the aunts and uncles have given our DC a present each it is too much.

What you have got is a nice amount if they don't have many gift bearing relatives. If they are going to get lots more from others I would keep everything but the scooter for Christmas.
