I’m fed up with the word ping.

I’ve seen it so many times on this forum over the last few days the word doesn’t even look right anymore. Even worse- pinged! No one was pinged. You can’t ping a person. Ping is a sound.

There- I’ve used up the entire “ping” quota for the rest of the century. You’ll all have to think of a different word to use now.

@MotionActivatedDog you’re right that people don’t ping but you’re misunderstanding the use of the verb and ist subjects and objects if you think that the phrase today is saying that people do ping.

People ARE pinged. (e.g. Dave was pinged while attending at his javelin-throwing competition).

So, Dave is the object of the verb to ping in this most recent usage; the verb tends to be employed in the passive voice. It’s not clear who the subject is, though (ie what exactly pinged them). Is it “Dave’s smartphone pinged him?”

But, one thing is categorically certain: Dave himself did not ping.

I really hope not, because if so I smell BS and she's not actually fed up with the word. Probably started it just to use the word.You just can't trust anyone these days! I was so invested in the thread.

I like ‘ping’. It sounds quite cheerful for a word that essentially means being told you have to stay locked up during a heatwave.

'Excited for' really irritates me these days too. Sadly I hear it a lot as I have an eleven year old.

Oh yes. Along with "impact" used as a verb.

I don't mind ping when they mean the app - I don't like it being used as a catch-all for all contact from test and trace.

Oh god I fucking hate it. Used to have a colleague who would say things like “I pinged you across a few profiles the other day”. What???

Ping is just the noise the alert makes.

People aren’t “pinged” by the app, they are alerted.

It was good enough for submariners using sonar, it's good enough for describing how a hair band or mechanical item can just sail off into the air, it's good enough to describe the feeling when something dodgy happens in your back or ankle ('something pinged or I felt a ping), it's good enough for IT techs or anybody checking their broadband speed - so it's good enough for me.
