I’m fed up with the word ping.

I’ve seen it so many times on this forum over the last few days the word doesn’t even look right anymore. Even worse- pinged! No one was pinged. You can’t ping a person. Ping is a sound.

There- I’ve used up the entire “ping” quota for the rest of the century. You’ll all have to think of a different word to use now. Wink

I'm honoured to be a lasting influence.
especially when it comes to dumbfuckery
🤣

MotionActivatedDog · 19/07/2021 10:55

Reach out to malcom. That’s right, reach through the screen, like uri fucking geller using the power of his mind!

Reach out - yuck
Ping - yuck

Also ruined for me over the last 18 months
Flocking - no-one "goes" anywhere any more, they all "flock"
Bubble - I used to quite like bubbles - less so now
Safe, particularly the vomit-inducing email sign off from my useless-as-all-get-out MP "stay safe" - FUCK OFF

SpongeBarb · 19/07/2021 10:58

"reach out"

fuck off. you are not Mr Tickle and don't have long stretchy arms

Grin

Totally agree.

52andblue · 19/07/2021 10:59

The App alerts people with a ping / tootle / select your annoying noise descriptor here

'Pingdemic' - gah!

LakieLady · 19/07/2021 10:59

@TheSunShinesBrighter

What would you prefer OP? 😄

ding
tinkle
clink
beep
bleep
peep
ting
jingle
jangle
ting-a-ling
chink
peal
tingle
chinkle
plink
pip
cheep
beep
toot
tootle
meep

Aaaagghhh - "tinkle"!

My late mother and her sister were forever agreeing to give one another "a tinkle". It made my teeth itch.

MotionActivatedDog · 19/07/2021 11:00

Yes bubble can do one too. We’ve had enough bubbles, bubbling, bursting over the last year to do us a lifetime. Ban the bubble.

Another one I’ve noticed in lots of MN threads recently is no-no. Lots of people asking if something is a “no-no”. I didn’t realise I hated it but I do. Confused

All the pandemic words can do one. At the moment my least favourite is 'mild' when does roving symptoms. Thank god I don't hear the word 'furlough' any more, especially the way people say it up here.

LakieLady · 19/07/2021 11:03

"Reaching out" makes me retch.

Just get in touch with people, ffs, or contact them.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 19/07/2021 11:03

@LakieLady

I know people who use it exclusively to say they need a wee.
eeech! I DON'T need to know what your pee sounds like you perv! just say piss, slosh, wee or urinate. tinkle.

MotionActivatedDog · 19/07/2021 11:07

especially the way people say it up here.

Please tell me how they say it. I have a need to be further irritated today.

If you sprinkle when you tinkle
Be a sweetie and wipe the seatie

Hahahaha! 🤣

Honestly, when I was writing my post I said to myself I wouldn't even know how to write it phonetically, as it's so odd!

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 19/07/2021 11:11

I really hate the phrase "fur baby".
With a vengeance.
Every time I see/hear it I'm compelled to call my kids "skin pets".

MotionActivatedDog · 19/07/2021 11:14

Skinpets!!! 😂

Haha YANBU. I'm amazed so many people haven't deleted what is a total disaster of a useless app, the minute they first got 'pinged'

VestaTilley · 19/07/2021 11:34

Agree, OP!

“Pinged by the App”, such lazy speech. What’s wrong with saying notified or alerted!

But the worst pandemic phrase HAS to be...

"The new normal"

🙄🙄

SpindleWhorl · 19/07/2021 11:36

@SpongeBarb

I get annoyed by it too! I actually used it the other day at work, in an overly breezy email and regretted it instantly.
'Ping Regret' and 'Ping-Use Regret' are crimes which, when committed together, should lead to very tough sentencing indeed.
ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 19/07/2021 11:41

Frangipani

the Covid vocab is horrendous.

but one good thing came out of it: Quarantini🍸

🤣

Did you say you’ll ping something over to them? Grin

Tsk tsk. You’ll need to rein that cheeriness right back in.
