Ditching my mask from today except for in hospital settings

Clearly this is fine legally speaking but AIBU to expect not to be asked to wear a mask from today onwards? I’ll wear one when attending hospital/doctors appointments but that’s it that’s were i draw the line. I shouldn’t be expected to explain myself right? I’ve wore a mask from the beginning and stuck to every rule. I won’t be rushing out to go to nightclubs as I didn’t do that before covid and i don’t suddenly feel the need to surround myself (closely) with lots of other people but I am looking forward to taking my daughter shopping and going to the cinema without having to wear a mask.

@MrsArchchancellorRidcully

I'm with you op. I'm double vaccinated, had covid about 2 months ago (barely affected me) and I'm done with masks. The number who wear them incorrectly is comical. Touching them (should instantly replace) and wearing them under their chins etc. Plus I hate not being able to give a small child a big smile. It's so important for their development.

I will wear them in clinical setting, I don't get public transport.

As a parent with a small child (born last May) I'd rather other people wore masks and offered her a little protection than smile at her. That can be done outside (or not at all) she is quite used to people wearing masks in public so isn't fazed by it at all. I myself have only had my first vaccine ( had to cancel and rebook my second as we were isolating last week)

Small business owner here. Retail setting. Our staff have elected to continue to wear masks and we fully support them. Some of our employees are anxious because they are vulnerable themselves or have dependents with compromised immunity.
We have notices on our Facebook page asking our customers to continue social distancing where possible and to keep wearing face masks.
The replies have been overwhelmingly supportive.
However, over the weekend our staff were lectured at and verbally abused when they politely asked a few customers to wear a mask - regulations still in force then.
We are finding it exhausting and demoralising.

Pigeonpocket · 19/07/2021 15:27

I wonder if people realise that no masks will increase the spread, more people will be self isolating, more places will have to close due to staff shortages and then they won't have a cinema or a swimming pool or a shop to go to, mask or not.

clarkkentsglasses · 19/07/2021 15:28

@User5827372728

You can refuse but then they can refuse you entry.

So yes it’s your decision but it will limit where you can go.

I would personally prefer to put on a mask and go wherever I want/need

Just get an exempt badge downloaded and then you can go anywhere you want Hmm

Nengineer · 19/07/2021 15:28

Twat isn't expressive [sic] swearing it's just stating a fact.

HideousKinky · 19/07/2021 15:29

I went to have my hair cut this morning. When I arrived I could see my hairdresser and all his staff wearing masks, so I wore mine too. I had guessed this would be the case.

Afterwards in Waitrose I wore it too, as did everyone else.

It is a sensible precaution at this stage

Stroopwaffle5000 · 19/07/2021 15:29

I'm sat in the hairdresser's chair at the moment, wearing a mask, as they have requested that customers continue to do so. I have no problem with doing this, it's not really a hardship. And they do allow me to pull it down to drink my cappuccino 😁

SqueakyPeaks · 19/07/2021 15:29

I hate wearing mine - but I will continue to wear it because it increases the protection of other people. And I like to think I am a decent human being. Sometimes it's not about me, is it?

MostlyMaple · 19/07/2021 15:29

@ginghamstarfish

I still don't get the big strop about wearing a mask for a short time while in a shop or public area. It's hardly a massive chore. While you may be 'free' to now refuse to wear one, the majority of sensible people are also free to judge you as an irresponsible and selfish person.
They are very annoying when you wear glasses and you get sweaty and your glasses slide down your nose and the lenses steam up.

One of the reasons I'm so pleased we are no longer being made to wear them.

Vintagevixen · 19/07/2021 15:30

Judge away guys - I've read the (incredibly paltry) evidence in it's academic form and that is what has informed my decision.

Peace!

NeverDropYourMooncup · 19/07/2021 15:31

There was somebody like that on the bus home the other day. Loudly declaring how it's all nonsense and they wouldn't be muzzled.

However, they were sitting amongst the latest bubble to burst on their way home due to multiple cases, some of whom were perfectly legally not wearing facemasks. Several of that group tested positive over the next few days.

Guess he's found out whether it's all nonsense or not by now. Not great for anybody else he's inflicted himself upon in the couple of days following his multiple contacts, though.
**@Doodlebug71* we most certainly are* living in a state of paranoia. Internet strangers arguing about a piece of fabric covering your mouth? What has the world come to.

Anyway let's agree to disagree - I respect your thoughts and opinions on mask wearing. You do you and I'll do me. Smile
How incredibly manipulative of you.

That piece of fabric helps to prevent the spread of covid. There's no way to tell who has it, or is carrying it, until and unless they test positive. There's also no way to tell how badly it's going to affect someone until they have it.

You have decided to abrogate your personal responsibility, and to present that as "You do you and I'll do me."

My opinions are based in science and evidence. Yours is just a very badly informed opinion, with no basis in facts at all. Just ignorance in every sense of the word.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 19/07/2021 15:32

I would say that 95% of customers and staff are wearing masks wherever I e been today. The dental surgery has the same rigorous precautions it’s had for eighteen months.

Will wear one at the hairdresser too and anywhere else that’s previously been necessary.

Flobbertybillop · 19/07/2021 15:33

It’s not just about you though is it?

MostlyMaple · 19/07/2021 15:33

@Doodlebug71 ok Mrs. Scientist, I'll leave you to your mask wearing Smile can't wait to take my manipulative self to the shops tomorrow!

Parker231 · 19/07/2021 15:33

@MostlyMaple - it’s a minor inconvenience for you to wear a mask but it will protect the 3.8 million vulnerable - surely worth doing

MostlyMaple · 19/07/2021 15:35

I'm not going to stand next to people breathing down their necks - I will continue to keep my distance. I'm not being guilted into wearing a mask, thank you.

dreaming174 · 19/07/2021 15:35

I don't get why being bipolar makes you exempt. My husband is bipolar and wears his mask all the time.
What exactly is the issue with wearing masks? I can't believe that adults are so childish about it.

transformandriseup · 19/07/2021 15:37

I went to a cafe today and there was a sign up asking customers to still wear masks.

Walkingtheplank · 19/07/2021 15:37

I started reading this and got too depressed.

COVID has not gone away.
Some people can't be vaccinated
Having a vaccination does not 100% stop you getting COVID
Having a vaccination does not stop you passing it on.

I'm just about to go to the supermarket.
I will be wearing a mask - not for my own safety, but because it's the socially responsible thing to do, to prevent the spread in case I have COVID but am unaware.

I was reflecting on this earlier today. COVID really has exposed those who care about others and those who are just out for themselves.

Dddccc · 19/07/2021 15:37

Well legally you don't have to wear one and legally the shops don't have to allow you entry

Wanttocry · 19/07/2021 15:37

I think govt wants to encourage masks as they are a very visual sign to people to keep the fear going.

Why didn’t they just keep the legal requirement then? How anyone in the government can, with a straight face, urge people to wear masks while also justifying removing the legal requirement is beyond me.

These are the voices who should be heard. Piers Corben may think it's a status symbol to be a conspiracy theorist but here are the people affected, mentally and financially. And possibly, by dying of a virus or killing a loved one.
Talia99 · 19/07/2021 15:40

@Frittataz

But they’re not a legal requirement so how can they do that? If I really wanted to I could simply lie and say that I’m exempt but why should I have to do that.
Because it’s private property. It’s like when I got a new carpet and asked people to take their shoes off before entering. It’s not the law that they remove their shoes, but equally, I don’t legally have to let that person in.
Nengineer · 19/07/2021 15:42

I have a cousin in London who Isa total champagne socialist. He had Covid in May 2020 and was quite ill but still prowled around the heath every afternoon, shopped daily and went to parties because, it's OK, he wore marigolds.
