Ditching my mask from today except for in hospital settings

Clearly this is fine legally speaking but AIBU to expect not to be asked to wear a mask from today onwards? I’ll wear one when attending hospital/doctors appointments but that’s it that’s were i draw the line. I shouldn’t be expected to explain myself right? I’ve wore a mask from the beginning and stuck to every rule. I won’t be rushing out to go to nightclubs as I didn’t do that before covid and i don’t suddenly feel the need to surround myself (closely) with lots of other people but I am looking forward to taking my daughter shopping and going to the cinema without having to wear a mask.

I screenshotted this analogy from a thread a few weeks ago - sorry I don’t know who the OP was, but it sums it all up perfectly

Covid will never go. Its here. Is lockdown and masks and being afraid to cough the way togo? Fuck no. Time to live with it.

Beendownthisroadmorethantwice · 19/07/2021 15:05

@BanditoShipman markedly! Wink
Perhaps it’s because the words me/my and mine are more important to them Grin

I've just been swimming at my local leisure centre. I didn't wear a mask in the corridors and neither did the staff. I'm going to a pub quiz tonight; I will just walk in and sit at the table without one. I will remind any staff anywhere that it's not a legal requirement any longer but they can wear one if they want.

Roussette · 19/07/2021 15:08

Will you be 'reminding' them even if they don't talk to you about masks?

Seems a bit unnecessary !

Whenthedealgoesdown · 19/07/2021 15:08

I just went to the dentist, the majority were wearing masks in waiting room, on the way I looked into the small independent shops and general small shops like chain estate agents, not one person wearing a mask including those behind counters, also large independent chemist and post office, 2 women walked out without masks, couldn't see inside properly. After dentist I walked past Wilko, from what I could see, probably about 70% wearing masks.

That's very gracious of you.

@Mixmeup

I'm not muzzling myself just to pacify other people's fears, sorry.

Of all the things there have been to eyeroll about in this pandemic - and there have been a lot - people calling face masks ‘muzzles’ has got to be the most ridiculously pathetic.

I'm really not pathetic, but thank you for your two cents 👍

Going to a shopping mall tomorrow evening and looking forward to being mask-free.

Also deleted the NHS covid app so can't get pinged 😊 bliss.

However I do respect other people's decision to carry on wearing their masks and wouldn't challenge anyone."

You have just demonstrated exactly why the government can't trust people to take personal responsibility. You do realise that you could pick it up, be asymptomatic, and pass it on to others, don't you?

gardeninggirl68 · 19/07/2021 15:14

@Pepsee

I work in retail. I won’t be wearing a mask from today. I would never judge customers for choosing to wear one, or not wear one.

As a company we would absolutely never stop anyone shopping without a mask or even ask them to wear one. I can see it being 50/50 in my area.

Same here

But I've been swayed. Will wear my mask most of the time I think. I'm menopausal and suffering so much in the heat I was looking forward to ditching masks completely.... our store is ridiculously hot, it's much cooler outside in full sun! Will try my best going forwards

It looks like I will be on overtime in coming weeks if not isolating, predicting many many staff off, we are already 10% down

Luminousnose · 19/07/2021 15:14

I got the train home from London this morning after visiting my DD for the weekend. My Uber driver was wearing a mask and so was nearly everyone in Liverpool Street Station and the people on the two (rather busy) trains I took home. It really was no different to when I arrived on Saturday. I’m sure though that the number of mask wearers WILL gradually drop over the next few weeks.

For myself, I was happy to wear it in the taxi and at the stations. I did think though, that it would have been pretty safe to take it off when I was seated on the train for three hours as there was no one either beside me or opposite me.

I’ve had to wear a mask at work for the past year and you do get quite used to them when you wear them day in and day out. I tend to think most of the objectors have only had to wear them when shopping, etc, and that’s why they find them such a pain. It’s harder when it’s hot, but I plan to continue to wear mine, particularly while shopping and on public transport. Plus I’ve not had a cold for a year and a half (virtually unheard of for me) and it kept my nose warm in the winter!

MostlyMaple · 19/07/2021 15:15

@Doodlebug71 we most certainly are living in a state of paranoia. Internet strangers arguing about a piece of fabric covering your mouth? What has the world come to.

Anyway let's agree to disagree - I respect your thoughts and opinions on mask wearing. You do you and I'll do me. Smile

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 19/07/2021 15:17

I'm with you op. I'm double vaccinated, had covid about 2 months ago (barely affected me) and I'm done with masks. The number who wear them incorrectly is comical. Touching them (should instantly replace) and wearing them under their chins etc. Plus I hate not being able to give a small child a big smile. It's so important for their development.

I will wear them in clinical setting, I don't get public transport.

MostlyMaple · 19/07/2021 15:19

@lunaduckdrop if we constantly live with this fear of "asymptomatic people" then we will never move forward with our lives. As I've said in a previous post, we need to learn to live with covid now.

As I've also said, I wore masks religiously throughout this, and stuck to rules. But now I think the time has finally come to move forward.

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 19/07/2021 15:20

I think govt wants to encourage masks as they are a very visual sign to people to keep the fear going.

MostlyMaple · 19/07/2021 15:20

Also FWIW out of respect I will continue to wear my mask in medical settings.

The3Ls · 19/07/2021 15:20

I will be in a clinical environment where you will still have to wear them. However by wearing them at all other times you also protect me and my hospital. I will wear one as staff in tesco are as important and have as big a right as me to be kept safe. In fact the service I offer is important but not as essential as food!

millymollymoomoo · 19/07/2021 15:21

Just been shopping today. No mask in any shop, inc supermarket. Was great

VickyEadieofThigh · 19/07/2021 15:21

Went to my local Tesco today - against my better judgement but there was stuff we needed. It was very busy - I live by the sea and we have a lot of tourists in.

I was really pleasantly surprised to see that almost everyone in there was wearing a mask. The few I saw who were not were much younger adults...

TheTallOakTrees · 19/07/2021 15:22

@Doodlebug71

Ah I see YOU conviently missed the insults from that poster, hence I find it better to wish her great day and then ignoring her.

It figures, another that reads the bits you want to..

Dontevenstart · 19/07/2021 15:22

@Frittataz

No, i actually don’t see the benefit of masks, I never have. I’ll wear one in a clinical setting simply because in my area masks are still a requirement unless you’re exempt.
Who cares what benefit you see in masks? Your opinion isn't what's relevant here. The scientific advice is. If you're not going to wear a mask, don't wear a mask, and crack on with your 'gentle reminders'.

You'll rightly be judged by the reasonable majority of society as a pretty goddamn selfish individual.

But of course people like you don't care about that either. Eugh.

lifehappened · 19/07/2021 15:22

@Nengineer crikey that language! Imagine only being able to expressive yourself by swearing! I am a mask wearer myself but I don't feel the need to be so aggressive. Just relax 🍷

Squills · 19/07/2021 15:23

I've just come back from my local shops and Waitrose store. I didn't wear a mask... I had one in my bag in case shops still required them but they didn't and so I didn't wear one nor did lots of other people.

I think some people will keep wearing them for fear of confrontation by others.

Wizzbangfizz · 19/07/2021 15:24

Just been to a shop - didn't wear one and no one inside was wearing one either. Was a fairly large petrol station with m and a shop in it. Servers weren't wearing them either.

ginghamstarfish · 19/07/2021 15:25

I still don't get the big strop about wearing a mask for a short time while in a shop or public area. It's hardly a massive chore. While you may be 'free' to now refuse to wear one, the majority of sensible people are also free to judge you as an irresponsible and selfish person.
