Ditching my mask from today except for in hospital settings

Frittataz · 19/07/2021 06:46

Clearly this is fine legally speaking but AIBU to expect not to be asked to wear a mask from today onwards? I’ll wear one when attending hospital/doctors appointments but that’s it that’s were i draw the line. I shouldn’t be expected to explain myself right? I’ve wore a mask from the beginning and stuck to every rule. I won’t be rushing out to go to nightclubs as I didn’t do that before covid and i don’t suddenly feel the need to surround myself (closely) with lots of other people but I am looking forward to taking my daughter shopping and going to the cinema without having to wear a mask.

This from another thread. This is why you should be wearing a mask, despite what our ridiculous government advises:

I've just finished a very busy night-shift, I'm a sister in A+E.
We've had lots of poorly positive patients through our doors, some double vaccinated. One was a 45 year old that's been intubated and gone to ITU and he's probably not gonna make it.
Wife was hysterical and screaming that we had so save him because he's been double jabbed. It was awful.
Numbers are deffo going up again.

gardeninggirl68 · 19/07/2021 12:52

@Rainbunny

When it comes to retailers' ability to enforce their own mask policies, well I expect that they won't, until if or when they have significant numbers of staff get sick or needing to quarantine with covid. At that point retailers might well decide it's worth beefing up security at store entrances etc.
Good point and entirely possible

Would Boris pay for that?

TheTallOakTrees · 19/07/2021 12:52

@UrAWizHarry

You keep your cloth mask, you do you. If it makes you feel safe or even invincible you are incredibly naive.

gardeninggirl68 · 19/07/2021 12:53

@Travis1

Whats the old saying - No shirt, no shoes, no service? Well now in a lot of places it will be no mask, no service and rightly so.
Who will enforce that? And how?
BruceAndNosh · 19/07/2021 12:54

My Goodness, there's a lot of contenders for Twat of the Day on here today

unwuthering · 19/07/2021 12:55

Yeah, the virus is really funny like that. It doesn't care if you're legally entitled to whatever, if you've been double-jabbed or not, if you read the Great Barrington Declaration and agreed with it, if you're a Sovereign Citizen...It really does not discriminate.

aldkj · 19/07/2021 12:55

I might need to double mask now.

@TheTallOakTrees

Viruses are indeed very small indeed. But they do not float freely around on their own. They multiply in the human body, in human bodily fluids, and are exhaled in droplets of various sizes of respiratory fluids. Masks are perfectly capable of reducing your inhalation of those droplets - the better the mask the more they will catch, but even a fairly run of the mill cloth mask is capable of catching the larger droplets.

Toesies · 19/07/2021 12:57

*🤣🤣🤣

Someone with covid next to you wearing a flimsy cloth mask will send the virus particles towards you since they pass through masks.

Is that difficult for you to understand?*

@TheTallOakTrees The viral particles would be fewer, though, than if that person were not wearing a mask at all. I know what option I'd prefer if I were sitting next to them. Is that difficult for you to understand?

Andrew2020 · 19/07/2021 12:57

Why are you even asking? Just to annoy other people I reckon…

Parker231 · 19/07/2021 12:58

We’re at a motorway services - good to see the majority wearing a mask and following social distancing.

1forAll74 · 19/07/2021 13:02

It would be more sensible of you to realise, that there is no difference,between the 18thJULY,and the19thJULY ,as to the virus still spreading,and thinking that the virus has vanished into thin air today. You still have to try and protect other people who work in shops,and closed in places.

SecretKeeper1 · 19/07/2021 13:03

Really good article, thanks for posting. It’s worrying how many more idiots are (literally) showing their maskless faces today.

Coyoacan · 19/07/2021 13:07

This is the trouble with being an obeyer of rules. You never think behind the rule to the reason for it. I presume when you make a rule for your children, you expect them to obey it without question but never explain why it is necessary.

WhereYouLeftIt · 19/07/2021 13:10

@Frittataz

But they’re not a legal requirement and if I am asked to wear one in shops I will gently remind them of that.
And they will gently remind you that they are a premises and may require you to adhere to their requirements whilst on their premises. Or go elsewhere.

Don't be a dick, OP.

WhereYouLeftIt · 19/07/2021 13:10

private premises

Anonymouslyposting · 19/07/2021 13:11

The fact that you’re legally permitted to do something doesn’t mean that it’s not selfish. You are legally allowed never to share anything, not to help someone who has been injured and to have an affair - but you’d still be selfish to do so.

Obviously you can’t be forced to wear a mask but it’s totally permissible for people to judge you for it. I’ve been shopping today, I wore a mask, some people didn’t, most did. I didn’t think the people not wearing masks were horrible and entitled but if a staff member had politely asked them to put on a mask and they’d declined (however politely) I’d judge them - it’s not fair to expose others to risks if they aren’t comfortable with it.

Dongdingdong · 19/07/2021 13:12

I wouldn’t bother wearing a mask on public transport in London if you don’t want to - loads of people don’t and I’ve never seen anyone challenged.

JavaQ · 19/07/2021 13:13

someone is looking for attention today...

Yes, good article that highlights the selfishness and stupidity of those who can have the vaccine but won’t.

@FixTheBone

All I'm saying is I reckon a Venn diagram with Tories, Brexiteers, Mask Deniers and All lives matter apologists would probably be a single circle.
Well thats funny because 99% of the mask refusers and covid deniers ive met have been of the liberal leftie persuasion!
Junkmail · 19/07/2021 13:16

Regardless of rules/laws etc for the future I will continue to wear one. The pandemic has really opened my eyes to the gems in the environment which was something I never thought of before. I used to get colds and chest problems all the time. Since having to wear a mask in public I’ve not had a single head cold. It’s really not an issue for me and I’d rather take the precaution.

Elphame · 19/07/2021 13:17

@gardeninggirl68

Well it was Waitrose this morning - a fair percentage of the staff weren't wearing them either. Some of those who were had them covering their chins but not their noses

There is no way the supermarkets will enforce mask wearing.

The independents will only do as long as they can afford to turn an increasing percentage of their customers away

WhereYouLeftIt · 19/07/2021 13:17

@PhilCornwall1

Similarly they can require customers to wear masks and will be allowed to ask you to leave the store if you prefer not to wear one.

A business will soon stop doing that when they see income decreasing.

I'm not sure their income will decrease, and I'm not sure they'd stop requiring masks be worn on their premises.

The news has been carrying stories of shops - even big supermarkets - that may have to decrease hours of opening or not open at all because of the number of staff having to isolate. Unmasked customers will increase the risk of staff infections, staff absences, and the likelihood of not being able to open at all.

I think shops will prioritise not being forced to close over the few customers who will do the 'I know my rights!' dance.

MurielSpriggs · 19/07/2021 13:19

If put myself in that demographic too, for the most part. It's complicatedGrin
