They were at the bus stop. She was about 5 It was a beautiful white dress with embroidery, and matching shoes She had a carton of juice, and was told off for a little skip of pleasure at the sight of their bus coming, in case the juice splashed on her dress or her shoes. Brother that looked the same age, maybe twins, or just very small age gap, in dark clothes and trainers, also drinking a carton of juice with a straw, leaping up and down like a show jumper, without attracting comment.

WIBU to say something?

"Do you know boys are twice as likely to grow up to own a car. Why do you think that is?"

Really?? Think that's pushing it a bit. People want to own a car, then they do.

I own a car. My partner does not. A car is something you either need or don't. Nothing to do with your sex.

Talk about reaching....

VerticalHorizon · 18/07/2021 14:35

www.statista.com/statistics/682605/consumers-who-own-a-motor-vehicle-in-the-united-kingdom-uk-by-gender/

76% of males owned one. 69% of females.

Let's at least use some evidence when making wild claims.

Notmoresugar · 18/07/2021 14:49

How sad.

PandemicAtTheDisco · 18/07/2021 15:00

Men are also more at risk of being in life threatening conditions when driving.

YABU to majorly sweat the small stuff...

My DD wears jeans and scruffy tshirts that look like they would disintegrate at the sight of soap and water some days and delicate, fancy dresses on others and everything in between.

If she spills juice on a generic t-shirt then I really don't care enough to be upset, but if she spilled juice on a nice dress because of an entirely foreseeable and preventable accident then I would be annoyed and therefore would warn her to stop.

OP if it was the boy in the fancy clothes and he got told off, would you have been bothered by it?

mangomochi · 18/07/2021 16:52

Not RTFT, but is this not more about the fact the girl was wearing white and the boy dark colours? If the boy was in a white shirt, for instance, jumping round with Ribena, would the mother have said the same to him? Who knows?

I’m not denying different messages aren’t projected into boys and girls from day one, but equally, we’ve all had situations where kids are wearing white or pale colours and squirt cartons of juice all over themselves.

BIWI · 18/07/2021 17:13

Why haven't you bothered to read the thread?

0None0 · 18/07/2021 17:17

@tigger1001

Did you read what I said. Boys are twice as likely to grow up to own a car. Not 2% more likely, or 10% more likely, or 14% more likely but TWICE. as likely. This is Extremely statistically significant. You say, o well, people who need them buy them.

Why are boys 100% more likely than girls to grow up to need one?

OP posts:
VerticalHorizon · 18/07/2021 17:26

Can you please provide supporting evidence for your statistic?

Also, women are more three times more likely to be teachers.
We can interpret that many ways.

Men are more likely to die at work.

We ALL agree sexism exists. Nobody is arguing with you on that. We are arguing that you're overreaching in the specific incident you've cited (and slowly drip fed).

mangomochi · 18/07/2021 17:28

“Why are boys 100% more likely than girls to grow up to need one?”

I don’t know but I could speculate. Men are more interested in cars as a general rule? Men see cars as a status symbol perhaps, whereas women don’t so much? All generalisations, sure, but you are asking.

What did the research say?

tigger1001 · 18/07/2021 19:06

@0None0 anyone can claim any statistic. Where is yours to say that men are twice as likely to own a car than women?

Here's one - think it's the same one already posted: - www.statista.com/statistics/682605/consumers-who-own-a-motor-vehicle-in-the-united-kingdom-uk-by-gender/

But it also doesn't look at why people own cars/ don't own cars. But it's not sex based. 76% of men to 69% women. You could break it down further I am guessing. Higher car ownership in rural areas as opposed to cities where there is a better public transport system? If I lived somewhere with good public transport I wouldn't own a car if I didn't need to. Nothing to do with being female but to do with costs. Cars are expensive to run.

Not sure why you chose car ownership as the defining sexist act.

Maybe stop pushing your own agenda onto everyday snippets of conversations of strangers.

Tistheseason17 · 18/07/2021 20:48

Can't believe this thread was meant to be about 5 yr old child in pretty white dress with juice, jumping up and down with threat of spillage.

There is some considerable reaching going on and derailing of thread...

VerticalHorizon · 18/07/2021 21:27

I dont think it was really about the mother, the girl or the dress.

CanICelebrate · 18/07/2021 21:33

This thread is batshit. You saw a tiny glimpse of the life of a family you know nothing about and have drawn some elaborate conclusions.

Motherofking · 18/07/2021 21:34

@PandemicAtTheDisco

Men are also more at risk of being in life threatening conditions when driving.
Men also commit more suicides than women
marcopront · 18/07/2021 22:02

If you had said in your OP that you knew they had only been to the supermarket it would have changed the responses somewhat.

There is no doubt that there are sexist attitude and that this could be an example of it. But there are other factors such as the colour of clothing and the closeness of the children to the bus that cloud the issue.

Sh05 · 18/07/2021 22:34

If that was me and you'd spoken up I'd probably have rolled my eyes at you and told you mind your own business!
You wouldn't have known that she'd begged to be allowed to wear that special dress and we came to the agreement that she'd try her best to keep it clean ( something along those lines)

stayathomer · 18/07/2021 22:50

Without moving back to the wacky part of this thread, maybe men are more likeLy to buy cars because they're more cavalier with their money, or more impatient about public transport!!

NiceGerbil · 18/07/2021 23:03

OP given that you didn't say anything I think YANBU.

I hate this shit so much.

PandemicAtTheDisco · 20/07/2021 10:29

Woman would prefer to date a man with a car!
