NETFLIX - why, why, why the misogynistic content???

DH has taken the younger kids camping, so I was planning a Netflix binge. But I’m annoyed already. So much content about women being murdered / abused. This is just a selection of what comes up in my “Recommended for You” -

“Top of The Lake” - supposed to have won awards, but seriously? Hideous.

“Sophie - A Murder in West Cork” - no thanks.

“Quien Mato a Sara” - say no more.

“Sky Rojo” - oh, you really must watch that (so I’ve been repeatedly told) - the actor guy in it is your DH’s double. Well, I lasted about 5 minutes with that. What utter crap it is. It’s clear the scriptwriter would rather be scripting a porn.

I could go on .... so many police / crime dramas that inevitably hinge on murdered female victims and, of course, evidence photos of female bodies being strewn across police desks at every possible opportunity.

Is it just me? How hard could it be to produce a drama that doesn’t hinge on violence against women?

Can anyone recommend anything (drama) please? On a positive note, I did live Motherland, but that’s about it.

I think it might be you. The last thing I was recommended was Branch Lines in West Shropshire.

Theploughwasshowingandorion · 16/07/2021 21:38

Are you a Spanish speaker? (Guessing by last two reccs!) I enjoyed the series ‘Elite’ -there’s about 4 seasons to get through- and the film ‘Wild Tales’ is a must if you haven’t seen it! or if you enjoyed Motherland maybe try ‘The Let Down’ (Aussie) or ‘Workin’ moms’ (US) - both pale imitations IMHO but still pretty entertaining…

dudsville · 16/07/2021 21:40

Try Together, about a family in lockdown. Brilliantly acted.

Monkeyrock · 16/07/2021 21:42

It works on what you’ve previously watched (plus a bit on trending), so the only one of those I’ve had is Sophie. Netflix is only suggesting those things because someone on your account is watching “women being murdered” programmes.

My recommendations are very, very different and not at all misogynist. You can look under your settings to change your previously watched and tweak your recommendations, if that helps.

entertainmentcrisis · 16/07/2021 21:47

I would say 7/10 recommendations on mine are about women going missing / murdered / not exactly in a great situation Hmm

The last thing I watched a few weeks ago was Morherland (brilliant) and another series about a an engaged couple going around the world and living in various tribal communities. That was good.

But now everything looks grim, except for cookery programmes.

Some non-misogynist stuff on Netflix, from a quick browse:
Lady Dynamite
Steel Magnolias
The Let Down
Rocks
Derry Girls
Saint Frances
Parks & Rec
The Durrells
Dead to Me
Nanette
Russian Doll
Grace & Frankie
Feel Good
Lovesick
Schitts Creek

Any of those appeal?

entertainmentcrisis · 16/07/2021 21:49

I heard about that “Together” - sounds good.

“Elite” shows up. I’ll have a look . Thanks!

Thanks Monkey. I’ve got none of those in my feed.

I don't think it's Netflix tbf. It's everyone.

Women being murdered and raped is just entertainment apparently

FrogWaa · 16/07/2021 21:50

Sweet tooth is on Netflix. I really enjoyed that. I wasn't expecting to.

FrogWaa · 16/07/2021 21:51

Derry Girls is fucking brilliance

FrogWaa · 16/07/2021 21:52

Working moms. Shitest title and Netflix image ever but actually really good.

dudsville · 16/07/2021 21:53

I know what you mean, me too!
farfallarocks · 16/07/2021 21:54

Queens gambit
Trying
Lupin
One

RustyFig · 16/07/2021 21:54

It's not just you. I wasn't keen on Elite but quite liked Bonus Family (Swedish programme about blended families). Second the Lovesick recommendation.

youvegottenminuteslynn · 16/07/2021 21:55

Same here, I stumbled across it and then binged it. Really brilliant.
FrogWaa · 16/07/2021 21:55

Ozark if you want something darker

farfallarocks · 16/07/2021 21:55

Zero zero zero

Dotoallasyouwouldbedoneby · 16/07/2021 21:56

Queen's Gambit is a lovely watch....you expect bad things to happen to her and they don't really.

farfallarocks · 16/07/2021 21:58

It’s a sin (channel 4)

MotionActivatedDog · 16/07/2021 21:59

I loved “Dark” on Netflix. It’s in German but you can have subtitles so it’s easy enough to follow.

GolfEchoRomeoTangoIndia · 16/07/2021 22:01

I’ve got literally none of that in my Netflix feed.

Things I’ve watched recently include:
2 Mission Impossible films
Bridgerton
The Nail Bomber documentary
Lucifer
Ru Paul’s Drag Race with DD
Aquaman
Shadow and Bone
Hobbs & Shaw
The Crown
Lupin
Toast of London
Star Trek Discovery
Disenchantment

God knows none of them are Citizen Kane but none of them match your description either.

Macncheeseballs · 16/07/2021 22:01

The truth is women do get raped and murdered, im not sure it's misogynistic to tell stories about it. Unbelievable was powerful story telling, and true.

TheLeadbetterLife · 16/07/2021 22:02

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt - an excellent, very feminist Netflix show - actually did a joke about how many shows about murdered women there are on there.

thecatsthecats · 16/07/2021 22:03

I think that it's unfair to lump all of it together.

We're watching Top of the Lake, and it's as you say, shock, a woman's backstory has to involve rape trauma. (Also the cringe as an LOTR fan of seeing Faramir singing Ronan Keating.)

But then Sophie, a murder in West Cork is very interesting. Hugely respectful of the victim and her family, and takes an interesting look at how attitudes and misogyny shaped the case, which seemingly should have been a slam dunk. And the Yorkshire Ripper docuseries focuses very much on the female victims and the experience of women in the region at the time, not just treating them as a body count.

I think that there's a big difference between programs where misogyny is the subject rather than the driver of it.
