NETFLIX - why, why, why the misogynistic content???

DH has taken the younger kids camping, so I was planning a Netflix binge. But I’m annoyed already. So much content about women being murdered / abused. This is just a selection of what comes up in my “Recommended for You” -

“Top of The Lake” - supposed to have won awards, but seriously? Hideous.

“Sophie - A Murder in West Cork” - no thanks.

“Quien Mato a Sara” - say no more.

“Sky Rojo” - oh, you really must watch that (so I’ve been repeatedly told) - the actor guy in it is your DH’s double. Well, I lasted about 5 minutes with that. What utter crap it is. It’s clear the scriptwriter would rather be scripting a porn.

I could go on .... so many police / crime dramas that inevitably hinge on murdered female victims and, of course, evidence photos of female bodies being strewn across police desks at every possible opportunity.

Is it just me? How hard could it be to produce a drama that doesn’t hinge on violence against women?

Can anyone recommend anything (drama) please? On a positive note, I did live Motherland, but that’s about it.

AIBU?

Women being murdered and raped is just entertainment apparently

This. Why can't we have thrillers which don't involve women and girls being murdered and raped? Can't be that hard, surely?

entertainmentcrisis · 16/07/2021 22:08

I’m scrolling now -

The Mess You Leave Behind - “a teacher fears for her life...”

Perfume - when a singer is found murdered with her scent glands excised...”

Delhi Crime - in the aftermath of gang rape...

The Trial - “the murder of a teen girl impacts a public prosecutor...”

Behind her Eyes - “a single mother enters a twisted world of mind games...”

La Mante - “Decades after her capture by a serial killer...”

The Woods - “evidence on the body of a homicide victim...” (no doubt a female one).

I think it might be because I watched some of Line of Duty? Probably that’s why.

Anyway, Workin Moms looks good. Thanks!

Modern family is brilliant

tallduckandhandsome · 16/07/2021 22:10

YANBU, even the teen stuff like The Kissing Booth. The ‘hero’ is an abusive arsehole.

entertainmentcrisis · 16/07/2021 22:11

thecats - Yes, I totally agree about Top of the Lake. Unnecessarily gratuitous and predictable.

Oooh I forgot about Jinny and georgia and also virgin river, they were both good

Macncheeseballs · 16/07/2021 22:13

So shows about men getting murdered are OK?

tallduckandhandsome · 16/07/2021 22:13

Ginny and Georgia has such an idealised view of high school it’s ridiculous.

LaPampa · 16/07/2021 22:14

It definitely serves up based on viewing - my husbands profile and mine recommend totally different things with barely any overlap. I’m not sure any of the you mention are recommended on either of our profiles. Can you try setting up your own profile and teaching it what you like!

Catflapkitkat · 16/07/2021 22:15

Another one for Working Mothers (agree with Frog on page 1) rubbish title but funny series

therearenogoodusernamesleft · 16/07/2021 22:16

The Trial of the Chicago 7 is brilliant, as was Central Park 5.

Netflix works on what you watch and like; spend some time going through and rating things you loved and hated.

Netflix has thousands of options - it's just showing you what other viewers of Top of the Lake have gone onto watch. They're reflecting the audience's behaviour.

suspiria777 · 16/07/2021 22:16

If you liked Motherland you might enjoy Workin' Moms (a Canadian series) and ... another one I can't remember the name of that's similar but Aussie.

goatsgalore · 16/07/2021 22:16

I definitely recommend 'behind her eyes' it's the most bizarre programme I've watched for a while and kept me guessing until the end. The description is off putting but it is not like the other shows you have described

Ohpulltheotherone · 16/07/2021 22:18

No you are not being unreasonable AT ALL.

I have been saying this to DP for the past 6/12 months but I’ve been feeling something along these lines for much longer.

So fucking sick of entertainment being about the murder and rape of women.

The last thing I watched - or started watching was Mare of Easttown….it got great reviews but I could tell within the first 20 minutes that it was going to involve the murder of a vulnerable young mum, so I left DP to it and moved on to something else.

I’m really enjoying Mythic Quest on Apple TV, funny, clever and weirdly warming.

entertainmentcrisis · 16/07/2021 22:19

It just seems to me that they’d are so many Crome shows about women going missing or murder scenes (usually female victims). Not just Netflix, it seems ubiquitous. I wonder if such dramas are driven by public demand? Otherwise, what is actually driving it and why does it need to be so inevitable / predictable?

boatyardblues · 16/07/2021 22:19

It was the diet of grim murder/rape/abuse of women thrillers that Netflix fed me after I’d watched some Scandi noir that turned me to Korean dramas. The majority of TV writers in South Korea are female (>80% vs

entertainmentcrisis · 16/07/2021 22:20

crime, not Crome!

entertainmentcrisis · 16/07/2021 22:22

Interesting statistic that 80% of US scriptwriters are male. Hmmm.

@tallduckandhandsome

YANBU, even the teen stuff like The Kissing Booth. The ‘hero’ is an abusive arsehole.
I hated this for the same reason.
Skysblue · 16/07/2021 22:24

It just recommends stuff similar to what your account has watched in the past. My recommendations are all for teen comedies 🤣

HereInYork · 16/07/2021 22:24

Queen of the South

Nuggetnugget · 16/07/2021 22:26

Emily in Paris is light hearted and fun
The movie About Time is nice
VIrgin River also soppy but easy to watch

Thisisworsethananticpated · 16/07/2021 22:26

I know what you mean

I really enjoyed Top of the lake that said
It was more existing within male violence than actual male violence

I guess male violence is a thing

That said there is a shed load of lighter stuff to watch in there

Bassetlover · 16/07/2021 22:29

Call My Agent brilliant!

Thisisworsethananticpated · 16/07/2021 22:29

boatyardblues

That’s good to know , I’ll try that !

OP one thing that I loved was shtisel and sgrugrim

I noted they were so well made and almost devoid of toxic male violence
Both Isreal made

I know what you mean though
