NETFLIX - why, why, why the misogynistic content???

DH has taken the younger kids camping, so I was planning a Netflix binge. But I’m annoyed already. So much content about women being murdered / abused. This is just a selection of what comes up in my “Recommended for You” -

“Top of The Lake” - supposed to have won awards, but seriously? Hideous.

“Sophie - A Murder in West Cork” - no thanks.

“Quien Mato a Sara” - say no more.

“Sky Rojo” - oh, you really must watch that (so I’ve been repeatedly told) - the actor guy in it is your DH’s double. Well, I lasted about 5 minutes with that. What utter crap it is. It’s clear the scriptwriter would rather be scripting a porn.

I could go on .... so many police / crime dramas that inevitably hinge on murdered female victims and, of course, evidence photos of female bodies being strewn across police desks at every possible opportunity.

Is it just me? How hard could it be to produce a drama that doesn’t hinge on violence against women?

Can anyone recommend anything (drama) please? On a positive note, I did live Motherland, but that’s about it.

I love a gritty compelling drama, I don't shy away from most subject matters, however not a big fan of unnecessary sex scenes which in general are directed by men , 'normal people' was gratuitous

@Macncheeseballs

The truth is women do get raped and murdered, im not sure it's misogynistic to tell stories about it. Unbelievable was powerful story telling, and true.
This would be my view. Certainly about the murder in Cork documentary. I haven't seen the one on Netflix at all, but I know the story from a podcast on the same subject. I don't think it's misogynistic to show that an abusive misogynist probably murdered a woman and largely got away with it.

Unbelievable was a story that needed to be told too.

I think the attractive murdered woman trope in fiction tv is an issue though

I love the Korean content on Netflix. Kingdom is bloody AMAZING.

I've also watched Sweet Home and Strangers From Hell.

All excellent.

lokomojo · 18/07/2021 21:05
@lokomojo - can you choose Korean drama on Netflix as a genre then...?

Yep I also feel repulsed by all the women being threatened/stalked/raped/kidnapped/murdered tropes.

The screenwriters haven’t caught on to this as a trend yet clearly -though there is a lot of other stuff out there to watch!- The woman as key victim is still going strong.
Yeah - you can. There's absolutely shitloads on there as well - my Netflix barely shows me anything in English these days.

There are recommendations by genre/with streaming platform in the OP of this thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/telly_addicts/4283404-MsLatt-s-Daebak-Cybercaf-Kdrama-addicts-25-We-may-not-always-agree-on-shows-oppa-preference-wonky-fashion-but-we-are-never-disagreeable?pg=1 Thread regulars are always happy to advise, based on what you are looking for or if you plan to eg watch with younger teens.

I watched Guilt last night on iPlayer. That was good, and no murdered women.

WalkingOnTheCracks · 19/07/2021 13:03

My wife seeks 'em out.

"What's this you're watching?"

"Another 'my husband's trying to kill me'. It's a great one."

"Right. Er...I think I'll go and play online poker..."

nokidshere · 19/07/2021 18:24

There's hundreds of programmes on Netflix, or sky, or i player, that don't involve female rape/murder. Make yourself a favourites list if you don't want to see recommendations.

boatyardblues · 19/07/2021 19:18

The algorithms are a problem though, nokids. After you’ve watched a few similar things it feeds you a heavy diet of more of the same. I heard from a friend you can completely reset your profile to ground zero but it would just do the same again. I got round it by creating different user profiles and watching my niche stuff in its own profile.
