NETFLIX - why, why, why the misogynistic content???

DH has taken the younger kids camping, so I was planning a Netflix binge. But I’m annoyed already. So much content about women being murdered / abused. This is just a selection of what comes up in my “Recommended for You” -

“Top of The Lake” - supposed to have won awards, but seriously? Hideous.

“Sophie - A Murder in West Cork” - no thanks.

“Quien Mato a Sara” - say no more.

“Sky Rojo” - oh, you really must watch that (so I’ve been repeatedly told) - the actor guy in it is your DH’s double. Well, I lasted about 5 minutes with that. What utter crap it is. It’s clear the scriptwriter would rather be scripting a porn.

I could go on .... so many police / crime dramas that inevitably hinge on murdered female victims and, of course, evidence photos of female bodies being strewn across police desks at every possible opportunity.

Is it just me? How hard could it be to produce a drama that doesn’t hinge on violence against women?

Can anyone recommend anything (drama) please? On a positive note, I did live Motherland, but that’s about it.

You can use the rating system to educate it on your taste. Give the ones you don't like a thumbs down and add some other type of shows to your watchlist. Is it possible for you to create your own profile separate from your DH?
Also the independent often puts articles out with the various codes for different genres

Dashel · 16/07/2021 22:30

Working Moms is well worth watching, DH and I binged that and also agree with Derry Girls but I think you may need to watch the second series on 4 on Demand. Another comedy show that is very funny is Atypical.

I would also recommend Snow Piercer and Virgin River both really good shows. Discovery is really good as is The Witcher. There is some violence against women in that but also strong female characters who cause a lot of violence

entertainmentcrisis · 16/07/2021 22:34

This one Sky Rojo is the biggest load of shite I’ve seen in my life. Set in a brothel strip club in the desert. Women gang raped from the off. But... it’s all ok..., yes, because wait for the plot - the man being set up as “hero” (haunted by the memory of the trafficked women he has killed), is having second thoughts about his “job” and contemplating better life for himself (he was only doing all this to support his elderly mother, after all).

Honestly, the fact they spent money making this drivel has really pissed me off. What did the actors actually say when they saw this script?

I watched ‘The King’ today which is a film based on Shakespeare’s three plays about Henry V and I really enjoyed that.

Might not be for everyone though…

Merryoldgoat · 16/07/2021 22:35

Oh, and Cobra Kai 👌🏽

GettingUntrapped · 16/07/2021 22:37

Top of the Lake is brilliant. Stick with it and you will see it is feminist.

Bimblybomeyelash · 16/07/2021 22:39

I enjoyed Lovesick and Offspring.

tallduckandhandsome · 16/07/2021 22:39

@entertainmentcrisis

It just seems to me that they’d are so many Crome shows about women going missing or murder scenes (usually female victims). Not just Netflix, it seems ubiquitous. I wonder if such dramas are driven by public demand? Otherwise, what is actually driving it and why does it need to be so inevitable / predictable?
Yep seems like killing of women and childless is an easy heartstring puller. Cheap pay day for writers.
CassandraTrotter · 16/07/2021 22:40

To a pp, how is rue paul’s drag race not misogynistic?!

Op, some recommendations id give are virgin river, ozark, motherland, working moms, derry girls.

And ive just finished Gameface on channel 4.

Thisisworsethananticpated · 16/07/2021 22:43

Loved offspring

Thisisworsethananticpated · 16/07/2021 22:44

My best has been The handmaids tale Grin

Cheery , not !

Waterlemon · 16/07/2021 22:44

If you enjoyed Motherland, watch “The Letdown” it’s an Australian comedy series about a new mum trying to get to grips with Motherhood, its like motherland the prequel!

Essentialironingwater · 16/07/2021 22:45

La Mante is badly described. She IS the serial killer, of men.

FrogWaa · 16/07/2021 22:45

@Macncheeseballs

So shows about men getting murdered are OK?
That's definitely what we all said.

And the long camera shots drifting over his dick while they explain how he was penetrated before being murdered, right?

Thisisworsethananticpated · 16/07/2021 22:46

Is La mante any good ?

Waterlemon · 16/07/2021 22:47

@Thisisworsethananticpated

boatyardblues

That’s good to know , I’ll try that !

OP one thing that I loved was shtisel and sgrugrim

I noted they were so well made and almost devoid of toxic male violence
Both Isreal made

I know what you mean though

I love Shtisel!

DH doesn’t likeWatching anything with subtitles but he enjoys watching This.

Torvean · 16/07/2021 22:48

@FrogWaa

Sweet tooth is on Netflix. I really enjoyed that. I wasn't expecting to.
I looooved Sweet tooth
FrogWaa · 16/07/2021 22:48

Yes, but not sure it would be made in this country (without going into spoilers)

Essentialironingwater · 16/07/2021 22:48

@thisisworsethananticpated we really enjoyed it but I do have a strange draw to French thrillers or dramas. Something about the pace, I think.

FrogWaa · 16/07/2021 22:49

Dark is glorious.

Essentialironingwater · 16/07/2021 22:50

OP, have you watched Unorthodox, based on the true story of a woman who left an orthodox Jewish community? Its a dramatisation - I found it enthralling.

Nancydrawn · 16/07/2021 22:51

@Monkeyrock

Some non-misogynist stuff on Netflix, from a quick browse: Lady Dynamite Steel Magnolias The Let Down Rocks Derry Girls Saint Frances Parks & Rec The Durrells Dead to Me Nanette Russian Doll Grace & Frankie Feel Good Lovesick Schitts Creek

Any of those appeal?

Most of this list is great, particularly Derry Girls, Parks & Rec (start with season 2), Grace & Frankie, and Schitts Creek. All are funny, smart, and center women.
FrogWaa · 16/07/2021 22:55

30 rock is awesome if you can find a non Netflix place to watch it. Kimmy Schmidt is great, and hilarious but I'd say people should point out that sexual abuse is actually a plot point (but yes, it's genuinely funny! And a comedy. But as a general trigger warning for anyone who specifically is trying to avoid those subjects

BoredZelda · 16/07/2021 22:59

Working moms. Shitest title and Netflix image ever but actually really good.

It really is very good.

The truth is women do get raped and murdered, im not sure it's misogynistic to tell stories about it. Unbelievable was powerful story telling, and true.

Very true. “Sophie - A Murder in West Cork” is actually a really interesting story.

lokomojo · 16/07/2021 23:06

This is why I watch kdrama. 90% women writers. No rape.
