The Italian Captain is a bully!

The Italian Football Captain is a horrible bully.

He should have got a red card for the way he treated Saka pulling his shirt collar and dragging him to the floor.

Also when Italy were against Spain the way he grabbed the Spanish captain persuading him to do penalties on the Italian side.

I can’t stand him. He deserves no praise and his team played dirty!

@DamsonJammyBastard exactly.

I'm far more bothered about the comments being directed to three young men (and many more) by some of their own fans. It's disgusting. That's racism and absolutely needs tackled (no pun intended!)

Frezia · 13/07/2021 21:33

It was an old school professional foul. It wasn't racist, it wasn't bullying, it wasn't assault, it was blatant but it wasn't particularly dangerous. Saka was fine. Worse things happen on pitch all the time. People who don't follow football really should stop making ridiculous comments.

SpaceshiptoMars · 13/07/2021 21:33

Deciding that Chiellini was being racist in tackling Saka (although there's zero evidence to support this) because they're sore that a result didn't go their way, is of huge concern.

I watched the game because the family were watching. Who won didn't bother me either way. It did bother me seeing the look on Saka's face as he went over backwards, and it did bother me seeing the particular picture chosen on the front page of the major newspapers the next day. The way the memes have gone have only strengthened my feelings.

Chiellini knew exactly what he was doing did he? It wasn't me that said that....

it's so gross to fling around accusations of racism based on absolutely no evidence whatsoever. Just because they're losing an argument and want to lash out. Especially in light of the tsunami of racism that's been doled out since Sunday by sections of English fans.

Cooldryplace · 13/07/2021 21:34

Strange how the FA have produced a multi page document on how to safely manage contact in football for young people, seeing as it's not a contact sport Grin

@XDownwiththissortofthingX

“The most ridiculously underachieving nation in footballing history” - one of 8 ever to be world champions.

Yup, with a population of 55 million, the richest league in the world, and a fanbase that never shuts up about being 'the home of football'

England have won the same number of major championships as The Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, Netherlands, Portugal, Greece, and Denmark.

Half as many as Uruguay (a fraction of Uruguay's if you include Copa America), half as many World Cups as Argentina and France (who have also won two European Championships), a quarter of Italy's four WC's (+2 Euros), a quarter of Germany's four WC's (+3 Euros), Spain have 1 WC and 2x Euros, Brazil 5 WC's and countless Copa America wins.

Then we have the astonishing fact that aside from outright wins, England have managed just 3 other losing semi-final appearances in their competition history.

Your comment about 'bitter' is bizarre. What on earth is there to be 'bitter' about when the matter at hand is a nations criminal under-achievement? England are an object of perpetual mirth, nothing to provoke bitterness about them Grin

I have to say I don’t know what it is about the thread that has made you so angry, because all it is is people who don’t watch football talking a bit of shite! I would have said presumably you don’t think this only happens in England, but given the amount of other stuff people seem to think are uniquely English problems recently perhaps I’d better clarify. One example other people did start a petition to replay the semi final (obviously you didn’t know that but that’s ok, you do now).

Subtle how you say “major championship” as though being European champions is somehow comparable to being world champions. I think you also probably know you can’t compare the annual cops America from the early 20th century to the World Cup or the euros. If you pick and choose your criteria to suit your argument then yeah we haven’t reached many semi finals. But does, for example, Holland disappearing from world football for a decade and the fact they’ve played in the most world cups without winning not make them contenders?

As for its coming home, the entire premise of that song is how England never wins anything! It’s self deprecation. If you’ve listened to the song lyrics you’ll know that. I would say the English are pretty self aware that we aren’t the most successful team in history. I never really hear about being the home of football other than in those lyrics.

Your post was a fairly inexplicable tirade against a team who has acquitted itself very well this tournament. The fact you referred to Sterling cheating (lol), implying we shouldn’t have won the 1996 World Cup and said we had every conceivable advantage in this tournament shows that you lack objectivity and just don’t like England very much. it’s pretty transparent.

Chiellini is absolute filth. He knows it and it’s part of his game.

Chiellini knew what he was doing in order to stop Saka. Yes. And for seem reason you seem invested in projecting racist intent on to that.

But the memes that emerged do not act as any kind of evidence as to Chiellini's thought process at that time. Kind of amazed this needs to be stated.

Frezia · 13/07/2021 21:40

Jesus Christ this may be the most ridiculous thread I've seen on Mumsnet yet.

tigger1001 · 13/07/2021 21:41

@DamsonJammyBastard exactly.

Says far more about them that they fling the racism card to people just because they are losing an argument and looking ridiculous while they are at it.

Sadly there are plenty of actual examples of racism from Sunday. That just wasn't one of them.

SpaceshiptoMars · 13/07/2021 21:42

Chiellini knew what he was doing in order to stop Saka.

And yet nobody has provided video of any other player being dragged by the throat backwards to the ground. So clearly not a standard move.

If I did this to a horse or a dog in the street, I'd be prosecuted.

It was a really cynical foul (as happens in football), no one is denying that but are you suggesting he should be prosecuted for it?!

I'm wondering why people don't get the sheer disrespect of the manner of the foul. ie, you wouldn't treat your dog like this.

I'm pretty sure it doesn't condone pulling them to the ground by the back of their collar. Grin

You probably wouldn’t slide tackle your dog either, but you don’t play football against your dog.

It was poor behaviour, of course it was. But he is the kind of player (and there are plenty like him) who roughs up and winds up the opposition. He got booked for it, like other players do when they behave badly on the football pitch. It’s not that big a deal.

Of course he should have been red carded and other Italian fouls were ignored but was anyone surprised? They're one of the dirtiest teams but are allowed to get away with it, was ever so, it was clear in the game against Spain. However against England they could guarantee no red cards and certainly no penalties to upset the opposition!

Harry Maguire this season pulled Azpilicueta down to the ground in headlock..not a standard move but to say it doesn't happen. Rare but it does!

Yes, that Elizabeth Lambert is a disgrace, but I do see a difference - her hair pull is swift, sharp and clinical - not a drawn out performance designed to humiliate. Did nobody here do any history? People in chain gangs being dragged by neck collars?

Frezia · 13/07/2021 22:06

Funnily enough the only player who had to be taken off injured after contact with the opposition (English) players was Chiesa on the Italian side. But sure Italians were assaulting players all night long Hmm butchering them as some here would have you believe.

You're just embarrassing yourselves and very badly.

Bunnycat101 · 13/07/2021 22:07

It might be normal but there are aspects of the game that don’t come across well if you’re dipping in an out of football. Eg tactical fouls ripping off the medals, booing anthems etc. Watching the Wimbledon final was quite a contrast to the football. I bet no-one’s ever chucked the runner’s up plate in a petulant hissy fit in centre court.

JulesRimetStillGleaming · 13/07/2021 22:07

Basically what happened was a shirt pull which happens multiple multiple multiple times in every game. Usually they get away with it. Usually they grab the shirt quite near the bottom. This time Chiellini grabbed at Saka and managed to get his hand in his collar. That's why it looked awful. It was awful. But a shirt pull isn't a red card offence. Unless it was a last defender situation with someone through on goal. But it wasn't.

melj1213 · 13/07/2021 22:08

it did bother me seeing the particular picture chosen on the front page of the major newspapers the next day. The way the memes have gone have only strengthened my feelings.

It was a key moment in the game (other than the penalties) so of course it was going to be the headline picture they chose ...

As for the memes, have you watched a football game before? The Zidane headbutt has been turned into all sorts of memes; Gareth Bale outstripping the Barcelona defence to win the Copa Del Rey has been turned into all sorts of memes; Rino Gattuso punching the pitch has been turned into memes; Ronaldo complaining has been turned into a meme; Neymar getting fouled and having his shorts ripped in the Copa America final has been meme'd; Chiellini himself has been meme'd from when he was bitten by Suarez ... memes are literally the norm in the football world- if there's a key moment in the game someone will have turned it into a meme
