So embarrassed to be English today

999 replies

UpSlyDown · 12/07/2021 12:20

Usually I am slightly defensive of the criticism the English get but today I feel like I have nothing left to defend. Riots, defacing murals of wonderful role models for our children, racism, violence. Horrendous behaviour from a considerable number of English fans. We are just playing up to the thuggish, drunk, stupid stereotypes. That along with the decision to just open everything up which has been highly criticised for being bonkers, the never-ending shame of Brexit. For the first time I feel embarrassed to be English and associated with any of this. Having said that, I personally don't know a single person who behaved badly post match or spewed vile racism online (thank god). I also mainly socialise/spend time with left wing remainers it seems.

Does anyone feel the same? Are there any redeeming features of the English or are we doomed to be the laughing stock of the world? I was so proud of our football team (still am) and the unity and excitement everyone felt. Part of me thinks this would have been so different if we won but why should it be?! We should be able to respond to a disappointment like rational adults instead of abusive idiots.

I'm proud to be English. Those idiots do NOT represent me, my country, or what we stand for.

morepizzapls · 12/07/2021 13:06

@HmmmmmmInteresting the level of ignorance in your last post is astounding. Just so you know, this country and the fanbase that myself and this poster is referring to, would not necessarily identify as white.

Applesonthelawn · 12/07/2021 13:06

Who do you think is laughing at us? I read European press every day, watch European TV, my inlaws are European, one in particular very influential in national football (not British or English). No-one has ever laughed at us.

Itsprobablynotcominghome · 12/07/2021 13:06

@Horizons83

The only English I’m embarrassed about are the ones that tie themselves up in knots wailing about how awful we all are and how we are the worst country in the world. The self flagellation is painful to watch.
I’m more embarrassed for the people that are embarrassed for the people who are embarrassed.
Tupperbear · 12/07/2021 13:07

It’s not just England who has problems with football hooliganism you know.

Oh right, guess that makes it all OK then. Lets try this logic elsewhere.

It's not just Saudi Arabia that has an issue with women's rights so it's OK for them to carry on as they are.

It's not just America who have in an issue with gun violence so no point condemning then.

There's a reason the English, especially English football fans, carry a certain reputation across the world and until we stop deflecting and minimising everything it will never change.

igelkott2021 · 12/07/2021 13:07

I also agree social media is a massive factor in all of that, as it gives stupid people an outlet for their abuse and stupidity.

For example that estate agent who posted a massively racist comment (and possibly another one "joking" about domestic violence from a troll account) who is hopefully now out of a job.

But he didn't do it because he was English, he did it because he is a racist moron.

I might have been interested in your thread had it really been about the football culture. But all you really want to say is that it is Conservative, Leave voters that are responsible for all bad behaviour following a football match. Okay.

I don't see anyone minimising anything. What we are saying is that you can't blame the entire population of England for the actions of some violent, racist thugs.

Keepitonthedownlow · 12/07/2021 13:09

It's all just toxic masculinity as usual

SlipperyDippery · 12/07/2021 13:09

@Fernando072020

Ugh this thread has given me rage. "It's not just us. Hooligans are everywhere". So that makes it ok? To just shrug it off. The thuggery, racism and rioting of a substantial number of people? Beating Italian fans lying on the ground. The booing of other teams' national anthems (which btw no other clubs did). The storming of the stadium which again, I don't recall seeing in recent years. Many English fans have behaved disgustingly. Seeing the comments here basically saying "ah well, it happens everywhere" is sickening. So does violence against women, and against black people, and against LGBTQ. But ah well, it happens in other places too, it's not just us, so yabu op. Fuck off.

Yanbu op and I have many friends saying similar today

What a ridiculous post.

The reason people are responding saying it isn’t just England is because the premise of the OP is that she is ashamed to be English because of this behaviour, and that this behaviour makes us “the laughing stock of the world”. Clearly OP has not written that post with the appreciation of the fact that this behaviour is not unique to English football. In fact, in my opinion, Italian football fans and their ultras are worse.

Please reread the thread and apply some critical thinking, and you’ll realise no one has said ‘so what’ about this behaviour, people have said it doesn’t make them embarrassed to be English. There is a massive difference.

Applesonthelawn · 12/07/2021 13:09

If it's social media you are talking about, wasn't the guy who threatened to rape Rebekah Vardy's daughter tracked down to India? Not saying they are not British, just pointing out that being a social media idiot, or any kind of idiot, is not a uniquely British characteristic.

SmokedPaprikaHotChilliPowder · 12/07/2021 13:09

I'm not embarrassed or ashamed. I refuse to take on the shame for others stupid actions.

I honestly do not believe the behaviours shown by some larger louts to be the majority of English people. I don't believe the majority of English people have hatred towards the black players of the England squad.

I am proud of the young lads that stood up and represented their country with dignity and skill.

Nonton · 12/07/2021 13:10

@HmmmmmmInteresting

Yes, the NHS needs to be privatised. It is not fit for purpose.
Do you even understand the history of the NHS?

How did Britain build the NHS?

The NHS was very much a postwar policy to help rebuild the country.

Privatise the NHS in a post-Brexit and post-covid world and the country might be asking for trouble.

Maybe think about that the next time you shout “Lest We Forget”…

corkernewyorker · 12/07/2021 13:10

Men. Bloody Men.

igelkott2021 · 12/07/2021 13:10

@Keepitonthedownlow

Well, quite. THAT is the really major issue and covers everything mentioned by Tupperbear too - womens rights (or the distinct lack of them) in Saudi, gun culture in the US and thug "fan" culture around (mens) football.
ZittiEBuoni · 12/07/2021 13:11

Applesonthelawn I came on to say just this. I've had a good look at Italian, French and German press today and haven't seen any negative coverage of England/the English at all.

Crankley · 12/07/2021 13:11

More bullshit by people who appear to be determined to talk down their own country. Do us all a favour and go live somewhere else if you hate England so much.

LouiseBelchersBunnyEars · 12/07/2021 13:12

These knuckle dragging thugs are despicable, but as pointed out, they are not solely English problem.

Unless you also think Italians in general are to be blamed for their scummy hooligans, why would you apply the same logic to yourself?

Drop the self hatred, denounce those rotten thugs, fly the flag high, and be proud of our wonderful team and country and all we’ve achieved 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

SlipperyDippery · 12/07/2021 13:12

@HmmmmmmInteresting

Does this happen in other countries? Is it just us?

Most likely not but I didn't see this kind of abuse make headlines around the world when Mbappe missed the penalty that knocked France out.

England is xenophobic and jingoistic now thanks to Brexit and that shower of racists in the cabinet.

Mbappe did receive racist abuse after missing the penalty, and a quick google will tell you this. It’s not reported on here because it’s not relating to a home nation. Same with hooliganism abroad.

It’s not just a problem in England.

mollythemeerkat · 12/07/2021 13:14

Being English is an embarrassment under this government. Just think of the awful nationalistic rabble rousing rhetoric we would have got if we had won. Hurling racist abuse at footballers is just another shitty side of what some people in this country do. Oh yes, and being drunk. Worse since Brexit but lying dormant well before that.

Laiste · 12/07/2021 13:15

It's very trendy to declare how embarrassed you are to be English at the moment so you're right on trend OP. Very earnest of you.

People must know damn well there's a minority of cunts in every nation? But no,
#see me all embarrassed

Bearsinmotion · 12/07/2021 13:15

I am proud to be English, because that’s what Rashford, Sancho and Saka are, and they are heroes and excellent role models for my children.

Maybe you should come over here to Italy and/or read the abuse I'm receiving. In my town they burned English flags, I told my daughter to remember not to mention she's my daughter to anyone who doesn't know us, I've had to block half a dozen people on social media, cars have been burned out, looting and rioting. I am barricaded in my house and probably won't leave it for a few days. The Italian press is reporting all of this as their joyous celebrations.
WhyTheEffNot · 12/07/2021 13:16

I consider myself British but I’m not embarrassed to be ‘English’ at all. I’m proud of those lads,
Proud of our team and I’m proud of the fact that practically everyone I know is shouting about racism and pushing back. It’s devastating the snotty behaviour that’s happened, but bemoaning the English won’t solve that, all that does is fire some people up. Pushing back on racism and bad behaviour and saying that is NOT the English way is a better headspace.
