So embarrassed to be English today

UpSlyDown · 12/07/2021 12:20

Usually I am slightly defensive of the criticism the English get but today I feel like I have nothing left to defend. Riots, defacing murals of wonderful role models for our children, racism, violence. Horrendous behaviour from a considerable number of English fans. We are just playing up to the thuggish, drunk, stupid stereotypes. That along with the decision to just open everything up which has been highly criticised for being bonkers, the never-ending shame of Brexit. For the first time I feel embarrassed to be English and associated with any of this. Having said that, I personally don't know a single person who behaved badly post match or spewed vile racism online (thank god). I also mainly socialise/spend time with left wing remainers it seems.

Does anyone feel the same? Are there any redeeming features of the English or are we doomed to be the laughing stock of the world? I was so proud of our football team (still am) and the unity and excitement everyone felt. Part of me thinks this would have been so different if we won but why should it be?! We should be able to respond to a disappointment like rational adults instead of abusive idiots.

I wish I was Scottish ... or maybe Swedish/Finnish ...

Sweden has a reputation for football hooliganism:

Name & shame all those who have made vile, racist comments & death threats - their actions are totalky unacceptable

Gbtch · 13/07/2021 22:16

Rather be in the England than anywhere in the world.
We have a very young team and they are changing the profile of football for our country.we have a group of very influential men who each have very good principles. Their partners are not WAGs, the team support “ Black Lives Matter” and they ( Rashford) are looking out for the least well off in our society with meals for the less fortunate. At last good role models. And good at their game. I am really proud of them. Didn’t want to leave EU but the vote meant we did. That’s democracy. We are strong and will prosper.
Our free press and freedom of speech need defending and with that comes some of the very offensive comments we read about race and gender. But I would defend people’s right to voice their view even if I don’t like their view.
So long as we have free speech , which I feel is under threat, this will remain the best place in the world to live.

@Shell4429

I have been ashamed to be English for a while now. Ever since the referendum vote when I realised how many people were small minded and selfish and entitled. Since then it’s becoming more and more acceptable to be racist, homophobic and xenophobic. The rise of the right is sending us backwards.
You do realise you are ironically being xenophobic Hmm

Well said re NHS. I was sent a job from a recruitment agency I politely declined as I had, thank dog, already got one. But in response said that I felt the job deserved better pay. Wanted a nurse to go anywhere in the UK and set up clinics, unsocial hours etc for band 6. I can just imagine what they would expect from this person, if anyone took it. I hope no one did. Fed up with nurses being treated like dogs bodies who dont deserve a life or a decent wage. I will hasten to say everyone deserves a decent wage but when the nurses have to take on an extra job to survive and they have a responsibility for keeping someone alive I think it puts things in perspective.

I felt just like you yesterday. On top of that, I was tailgated by two separate drivers on my way home from work, one of whom overtook me in a 30mph zone and shouted "Stupid c**t" as he passed. I was in tears when I got home and told my partner I've had enough of this godawful country.

Then I popped to the supermarket, where a young street drinker collapsed in the car park. Within seconds, four of us raced over to help, the supermarket's security, manager and first aider came straight out to help and an ambulance with wonderful paramedics arrived quickly and took him to hospital. I went home thinking that there are real moments of hope.

Is anyone else watching Newsnight? I think they just said that the vast majority of the social media accounts they analysed which sent this awful racist abuse were actually from outside the UK.

FootballisgoingtoRome · 13/07/2021 22:57

Seems like UEFA is taking action couldn’t agree more with them . Something needs to change .

Yes, probably via VPN or Proxy.

It isn't difficult.

lllllllllll · 13/07/2021 23:02

Yes, probably via VPN or Proxy.

I’m not technical at all - does that mean these racists could be within the UK but using some sort of device to make it look like they’re not?

VerticalHorizon · 13/07/2021 23:04

Yes.
Not a device per se, but a facility that allows you to access the Internet as though you were in a foreign country.

Via VPN most likely. I live in California according to my vpn
HmmmmmmInteresting · 13/07/2021 23:06

The government will push this 'most of the abuse came from abroad' narrative, though, because the blue rinse brigade will be unhappy England is being shown in a bad light. It's ok to be racist, but not THAT racist, ffs!

HmmmmmmInteresting · 13/07/2021 23:09

Sky and BBC news are complicit.

Just spend ten minutes listening to a story about this and you will hear the biased words and phrasing they use- if you have an ounce of critical appraisal skills.

Gareth Southgate said the same thing when interviewed yesterday morning, so this has been known all along.
JohnStonesMissus · 13/07/2021 23:50

I vaguely remember someone else famous getting racist abuse and it eventually got traced back to Russia..

FootballisgoingtoRome · 13/07/2021 23:57

Is the 38% rise in domestic violence when England lose is that also done by bots outside of England ?

StormzyinaTCup · 14/07/2021 00:10

This is quite an interesting article relating to Russia and USA and stoking of racial tension that could easily happen/already be happening in the U.K.

sue20 · 14/07/2021 00:22

I'm appalled that our government hasn't taken more of a stand against the racism of the primitives in the crowd, but English? e.g. I'm proud of the England team and they are all English. It's not national, it's appalling moral behaviour across all nations, surely.

jskei · 14/07/2021 00:29

Thank you!! That's the central point ... those on here who don't give a crap about racism the "few bad apples ..don't criticise my country mob" don't get they may not face racism but they or their kids can face domestic abuse. They're the same thugs.

I don't think one person on here has said they don't give a crap about racism, Many people have said they don't feel personally ashamed because of violent racist thugs, huge difference
Tealightsandd · 14/07/2021 00:37

Agree Sue

As an aside, I'm quite shocked that the FA, government, and celebrity figures haven't spoken out on and condemned the shocking racist attack suffered by a Jewish man in London, including from a group of England football supporters.

www.mylondon.news/news/zone-1-news/ill-slit-your-throat-man-20968732.amp

Obviously, as with the disgusting racist abuse of black footballers, this incident doesn't represent the majority of football fans. But, just as the FA, government, and prominent celebrities have condemned the racist abuse of black footballers, so they should condemn the racist assault on a Jewish person.

I don't understand why they haven't?

That myth is dangerous. I mean, the incorrect stereotype of a domestic abuser as a racist thug. In reality domestic abusers come from all walks of life, left and right, racist and non racist, every nationality, race, and religion. Every skin colour and tone. All ages, classes, and every political allegiance. It's really very far from the stereotypes.
jskei · 14/07/2021 00:55

I don't think one person on here has said they don't give a crap about racism,

Nothing says 'I don't give a crap' about racism louder than the continued denial that this is a big problem "a few bad apples", that we've done nothing to address it in decades,, and we get more angry at those who call us ALL out for racism then the perpetrators who commit it.

Yep. Straight out of the Jeremy Corbyn playbook.
