...do you keep bread in the fridge?

OP posts:
worktrip · 10/07/2021 22:35

No The cold air dries out bread.

VerticalHorizon · 10/07/2021 22:35

To slow down mold, make sure you keep it in a bread bin as heat at light encourage mold. The cooler and darker, the better (but not in a fridge)

TheNestedIf · 10/07/2021 22:37

Yes.

I used to disagree about this with the ex. I sometimes bought lovely artisan sourdough loaves from a nice bakery. On one occasion, I did it his way and kept it out of the fridge. Within 3 days it was as blue as a Smurf's bottom and useless. Kept in the fridge, the same type of loaf was fine for a week, albeit a bit stale. Staleness matters less than mouldiness as at least it's still good for toast.

I know this is going to get me chased out of here with a pitchfork by some posters but I put eggs in the fridge, too, and ketchup, and chocolate, and potatoes (they don't go THAT sweet). So there.

JustMeAndWheatley · 10/07/2021 22:37

No!

Ludoole · 10/07/2021 22:38

Hell no!!

81Byerley · 10/07/2021 22:39

No, it goes stale more quickly in the fridge.

VerticalHorizon · 10/07/2021 22:42

Strictly speaking it doesn't go more stale - it's the starch becoming stiffer making it feel like it's stale. This will be undone if you toast it!

pallisers · 10/07/2021 22:44

Absolutely not. We have a bread bin thing in the pantry. I do freeze a lot of bread though.

Mrsmadevans · 10/07/2021 22:47

No !
There was a pamphlet in the Mail on Sunday a coupe of weeks back about things that should not stay in the fridge and bread was one of them .

Mrsmadevans · 10/07/2021 22:49

Bread lasts six times longer OUT of the fridge in a cool, dark and dry place

frigglerock · 10/07/2021 22:49

Bread, no.

Cookies, no.

Chocolate, no.

Eggs, yes.
Ketchup, yes.

Or also if you add water and heat it up in the oven. Honestly I WOULD keep bread out if I could but we already buy the smallest pack and it's only me and DP. What are we supposed to do? not eat bread? Keep throwing away a pack every week? Would genuinely love some solutions as I grew up in a big family and the bread was gone before it had the chance to go mouldy. No comparison there..
Whydoiwearsomuchleopardprint · 10/07/2021 22:50

No way!

frigglerock · 10/07/2021 22:50

Even based on experience in the most humid parts of the US, no. I won't say that no-one does, but it's certainly not universal or even nearly so.

KillerFlamingo · 10/07/2021 22:51

It confused me when I went to Australia that this was apparently normal but I guess bread reacts differently in their climate. Plus, they mostly had bigger fridges.
We only have a tiny, under-counter one so good luck squishing bread in there!

StrawberrySundayz · 10/07/2021 22:56

When I lived in the US I knew people that would keep bread in the fridge. But it makes it go staler faster so I don’t.

jelly79 · 10/07/2021 22:59

No! But I will sometimes keep half a loaf in the freezer for toast if we have none

fourquenelles · 10/07/2021 23:01

@PastMyBestBeforeDate

Freezer only here.
Me too.
PrettyLittleFlies · 10/07/2021 23:02

Never store baked goods in the fridge. Ugh.

Freezer is fine then just take what you need. Stays fresh, no waste.

Oh, and to whoever mentioned ducks, bread is very bad for ducks 😔

boireannach · 10/07/2021 23:03

I worked with people who did this. I resigned,

Ratalie · 10/07/2021 23:03

It tastes worse, takes up space and goes stale quicker in the fridge: why on earth would you keep it in there?

RoseMartha · 10/07/2021 23:04

Not usually. Occasionally if it is really hot weather because it will go mouldy if I leave it out.

LadyBonnibel · 10/07/2021 23:05

No! The only baked thing I’d keep in the fridge would be something like a pie or cake with fruit or cream involved.

NancyPickford · 10/07/2021 23:07

No! Why would you?

MadCattery · 10/07/2021 23:08

@Sweetpeasaremadeofcheese

Yes....if you live in a tropical climate. Otherwise no.
I live in a somewhat tropical climate on the Gulf Coast of Florida and I don’t like stale bread. Freezer only, never the fridge.
