...do you keep bread in the fridge?

OP posts:
Frannibananni · 10/07/2021 22:03

Not unless you live in a very hot humid climate. So no I’ve never kept it in the fridge .

Trinidading3 · 10/07/2021 22:03

Absolutely not!Angry

WhoDidAndWhy · 10/07/2021 22:04

Yes because the climate here is very hot and it means it keeps longer.

Maybe stop with the ageism, eh? It’s not funny. Or fair.

Wobblywibblywoo · 10/07/2021 22:06

No

Blossomtoes · 10/07/2021 22:06
@Blossomtoes Others had noted that old people kept bread in the fridge. I was meaning that it wasn't because they were old, but because they were more likely to live alone. (eg the "only old people do" post above).
Sorry. I misunderstood. 💐

Regarding eggs as far as I’m aware we don’t wash eggs hence why you may occasionally find the odd feather or whatever in other countries are ‘washed’ which removes the outer layer on the egg shell protecting it from bacteria. I’m pretty sure eggs are washed in the USA and possibly other countries outside EU so need to be refrigerated but here (I’m in the UK) there is no need. I usually store it however it is stored in the supermarket. Eggs are an ambient product therefore ambient at home.

Different kettle of fish when products have been opened, ketchup for example goes in the fridge once the seal is broken.

Sick

Science. Experiments. Daniel Gritzer of Serious Eats :

In lieu of acts of god and any other kind of divine intervention, the best way to store bread is well wrapped in plastic and/or foil in the freezer, whether sliced or not, then reheated in the oven. If you don't want to deal with reheating the bread, wrap it well in plastic and/or foil and keep it at room temperature; it won't be as good the next day, and it will only get worse from there, but you should be able to eke some extra life out of your bread before it's no longer enjoyable. And if you do let it sit for too long (or if you make the mistake of refrigerating your bread), pop it in the oven and you should be able to reverse a fair amount of the staling, assuming you had it wrapped well enough to prevent drying.

tbh: I think the experiments needed more variables relating to environmental temperature and humidity but always good to see some experiments.

OnTheBenchOfDoom · 10/07/2021 22:10

I have two teenage sons, there is no room in the fridge for the bread even if I was mad enough to want to put it in there. Do you have any idea how much bread we could potentially go through in a week with teenage boys? Plus a toast loving Dh? I would need a commercial sized walk in fridge.

Madness to even want to put bread in the fridge.

WithANameLikeDaniCalifornia · 10/07/2021 22:11

Ugh tell your family to give their head a wobble

feelingfree17 · 10/07/2021 22:11

No, never

HumphreysCorner · 10/07/2021 22:11

Absolutely not x

CrunchyCarrot · 10/07/2021 22:11

Absolutely not! I keep it in the freezer!

SeaToSki · 10/07/2021 22:11

I do sometimes…..but before you send out the SAS to get me 🤣. I never would if I lived in the UK.

I am in the States and when my kitchen air temperature gets above 85 f (29.5 in new degrees) and I am buying nice bread that doesnt have tonnes of preservatives, I do put it in the fridge to get a couple of extra days out of it before it goes mouldy. I do seal it in a air tight bag and we also have to toast it, but its worth it to not have to shop every two days or switch to cottonwool bread for the summer.

Sixsillysausagessizzlinginapan · 10/07/2021 22:11

Eww no

NeonDreams · 10/07/2021 22:12

Yes! It goes stale quicker if not put in the fridge. I don't know anyone in my country (Australia) that doesn't keep the bread in the fridge.

idontlikealdi · 10/07/2021 22:12

No! We don't each much of it though so keep it in the freezer in batches if 4 and take it out when needed.

Gingernaut · 10/07/2021 22:12

Keep it in the freezer, break away enough slices for the morning and make my packed lunch with frozen bread.

Agadorsparticus · 10/07/2021 22:12

Nope in a cupboard. Never in the fridge, I do freeze bread though.

LadyPoison · 10/07/2021 22:13

No No No

Sciurus83 · 10/07/2021 22:13

Absolutely not!! It goes dry and weird and is cold. Monster bread fridge people need to accept the error of their ways, there is no compromise here

Misty84 · 10/07/2021 22:14

We keep bread in the freezer!

girlmama32 · 10/07/2021 22:14

No, my mum does though and I've always found it odd.
I don't think I know anyone else that does.
