...do you keep bread in the fridge?

In the freezer ducks

MrsTerryPratchett · 10/07/2021 21:57

@Avoidance

No, starch gelatinisation happens faster at lower temperatures so in fact does the complete opposite of “keeping it fresh for longer”.

Also why companies blast freeze product as the faster the product is below -18 degrees the fresher the product will be when defrosted/refreshed. Compared to a longer freezing process (home freezing) which takes much longer to get the core of the product frozen and why it never tastes at good as when bought fresh.

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is why I love this place. There is always someone who actually know stuff on here. Thanks @Avoidance.

This is also why DH now says, "what does MN think?" about any new topic because he's been schooled by you lot too many times!

DontDoThatGeorge · 10/07/2021 21:57

No.

Even Americans don't do that.

Blossomtoes · 10/07/2021 21:57

Don’t you mean people who live alone @WinterIsGone? Is age really a factor?

M0rT · 10/07/2021 21:58

I feel your pain, been having this debate since I started living with my DH.
I've finally stopped bread and eggs going in the fridge, but we rarely get pastries etc so he just defaults to everything in the fridge for them if I don't remember to make a point of stopping him first.
He has been known to bring home fresh croissants and put them in the fridge!!

gillybombilly · 10/07/2021 21:58

I store ours in the microwave - keeps it perfect for days.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 10/07/2021 21:58

God lord, no!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 10/07/2021 21:58

*Good

greenlynx · 10/07/2021 21:58

No, of course not .
And neither bagels, scones, muffins, biscuits or cookies, but cream cakes - yes

TheFoundations · 10/07/2021 21:58

LTB

TellingBone · 10/07/2021 21:59

In disputes of this nature [see also: eggs] always refer to what the shop does with them. The shop has the biggest investment in stuff lasting as long as possible.

DrinkingWishingSmokingHoping · 10/07/2021 21:59

Depends on the bread! I keep our usual bread in the fridge because it keeps for ages that way, and it’s not a bread that I ever eat without toasting anyway (so doesn’t ever have that ‘fresh crusty’ vibe that you wouldn’t want to ruin by refrigerating). I buy loads when it’s reduced and freeze it too - it can even go straight in the toaster from frozen.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 10/07/2021 21:59

@DontDoThatGeorge

No.

Even Americans don't do that.

The ultimate condemnation.
Dodie66 · 10/07/2021 21:59

Yes keeps my bread for longer as I am the only one using it

hookiewookie29 · 10/07/2021 22:00

No! Doesn't it get a bit damp?

TheValeyard · 10/07/2021 22:00

I've finally stopped bread and eggs going in the fridge

Eggs I don't have as much of a problem with, 'specially as a lot of fridges come with special egg trays, but bread offends me on a moral - nay, spiritual - level.

BestestBrownies · 10/07/2021 22:00

Fuck no!

Bread belongs in the freezer

toolazytothinkofausername · 10/07/2021 22:00

We keep it in the freezer...

LookMoreCloselier · 10/07/2021 22:00

Bit of both, cupboard for first couple of days when nice and fresh, then remaining third or so of loaf is moved to fridge to prolong it and is only used for toast from thereon.

nocturnalcatfreetogoodhome · 10/07/2021 22:01

YES!

I never used to I thought it was mad. A loaf lasts twice as long.

Give it a go the next time you buy bread - you'll never go back.

Returnoftheowl · 10/07/2021 22:02

Absolutely not.

TheValeyard · 10/07/2021 22:02

A loaf lasts twice as long.

Controversial...

OP posts:
Siepie · 10/07/2021 22:02

No!

When I lived alone I’d keep it in the freezer, but never the fridge!

WinterIsGone · 10/07/2021 22:02

@Blossomtoes Others had noted that old people kept bread in the fridge. I was meaning that it wasn't because they were old, but because they were more likely to live alone. (eg the "only old people do" post above).

reprehensibleme · 10/07/2021 22:03

Keep it in the freezer - straight into the toaster or ten minutes defrost for sandwiches. No waste.
