...do you keep bread in the fridge?

OP posts:
trappedsincesundaymorn · 11/07/2021 18:37

Yes. Always have done.

angela99999 · 11/07/2021 18:37

Ni, but like others I freeze bread when I need to. Keeping it in the fridge stops it going mouldy but makes it go hard.

clarehhh · 11/07/2021 18:37

No goes stale faster

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 11/07/2021 18:37

Not normal bread, no. But my low carb keto bread goes in the fridge as that's what the manufacturer recommends.

JoBrodie · 11/07/2021 19:03

I keep ciabatta rolls in the fridge as they observably last longer when I do. Bread is out (in its bag) on countertop for a few days then when there's enough room in the bag to slant / space the slices a bit (easier to separate once frozen) it goes in the freezer and lives out the remainder of its life as toast.

My dad used to keep bananas in the fridge and whenever I visited I had to mark my bananas with 'NO' written in biro to stop mine ending up in the fridge with his (I definitely recommend writing on bananas with a biro if you've not tried it).

No, in an experiment with year six we actually found that mould grew more on refrigerated bread than dark cupboard.

YukoandHiro · 11/07/2021 19:06

No, but it does last longer when you do. I did when I lived alone so I could eke a loaf out for a week or more

OoglyMoogly · 11/07/2021 19:08

No. We keep ours in the freezer as it's usually only for toast anyway.

hullaballoo19 · 11/07/2021 19:09

No

purplebunny2012 · 11/07/2021 19:14

Yes

cushioncovers · 11/07/2021 19:16

No

Imapotato · 11/07/2021 19:17

Eeeewwwww! No!

purplebunny2012 · 11/07/2021 19:18

It doesn't make it go stale quicker, either. For some reason we weren't managing to get through one and it took 12 days to start going stale. Usually a loaf doesn't last a week in our house, but my son has switched to wraps.
I also suck the air out as per another poster

When I married my starter husband, we argued about where the ketchup belonged. Solution was I bought two bottles. One for the fridge-which was very clean, and one for the cupboard. After three months, his cruddy stained bottle disappeared (not me) and he started using the clean and cold one. He still fussed about it. I left him by the side of the road.

Pipsquiggle · 11/07/2021 19:21

No

LincolnshireYellowBelly · 11/07/2021 19:23

In general, no. However, if it’s the height of summer and we have space in the fridge then yes

ImperialLeather00 · 11/07/2021 19:25

My mum has always done this…every time she visits our bread ends up in the fridge too! Growing up she did the same, never understood why!

Toooldforthisshit49 · 11/07/2021 19:31

No, not sure I would want to

BiscoffAnythingIsTheWayForward · 11/07/2021 19:34

It took me a few years to stop my Australian (from Brisbane), husband putting bread in the fridge 😆 Definitely not needed in sunny Yorkshire 😉

sgtmajormum · 11/07/2021 19:35

Only when it's extremely hot weather to stop it going off

JLL1990 · 11/07/2021 19:37

Refrigerating bread speeds up the staling process. So no, you should not put bread in the fridge.

Avoidance · 11/07/2021 19:39

@RenoSusan

Sorry if I seem ignorant but may I ask what a starter husband is? I presume first husband?

English isn’t my first language and no offence is meant by this question.

Avoidance · 11/07/2021 19:40

@RenoSusan unless it was a typo and you meant sisters hubby. In which case sorry for making a point of it Blush

letmethinkaboutitfornow · 11/07/2021 19:41

Yes, but it’s not this crappy white toast one. Actually one that can get mould.

petelacey · 11/07/2021 19:41

Bread keeps longer in the fridge. Only downside is being cold for a short while if you want sandwiches instantly. Toasts better, lasts longer. Most times our bread, not in the fridge, goes off before it's eaten.
