...do you keep bread in the fridge?

OP posts:
Calmate · 10/07/2021 23:51

Yes, only very recently, due to fruit flies ! They even found their way into the metal bread bin, they were inside a bread wrapper ! They were crawling up a vase of fresh flowers too, so I can't even have flowers in the house now. I never had fruit flies in my previous home, but the blighters seem to be persistent non invited guests here, unless ALL fruit & veg is stored in fridge, bread too now. I've tried the vinegar trick, they just clustered on top of bowl and I vacuumed them up.

Maggiesfarm · 10/07/2021 23:52

It depends on the bread. If I have a sliced loaf that is a bit over the date, I will wrap it and put in the fridge, bringing out slices to toast. Nice fresh unsliced bread and rolls need to be eaten on day of purchase, or else frozen and re-baked.

MrsFlinch · 10/07/2021 23:52

Only if it’s hot and we’re not using it up quick enough. Otherwise it stays in the cupboard.

THEDEACON · 10/07/2021 23:55

Yes because my kitchen is SO hot it goes off too quickly otherwise

1forAll74 · 10/07/2021 23:57

I do sometimes, my local shop has started to sell only this artisan type of bread, and it's quite thick and hardish, and it goes off and moldy quite quickly, so I put it in the fridge when it's warm weather. and it makes horrible toast also.

PigletJohn · 10/07/2021 23:58

Not usually, but recently kitchen has been very hot and bread gone mouldy otherwise.

Yes, it does go stale quicker.

Jazzybeats · 11/07/2021 00:02

No. Bread in fridge goes stale faster. Bread outside fridge goes mouldy faster but we eat it too fast for that to be a problem.

Source: I worked for a major bread brand…

pigsDOfly · 11/07/2021 00:03

No, it goes stale very quickly if kept in the fridge.

I live on my own and will often freeze bread and take out a few slices at a time. Once defrosted it's like fresh bread.

Why not do that if you need to keep it fresh?

Somethings just shouldn't be kept in a fridge.

AnxiousWeirdo · 11/07/2021 00:05

I had this argument with dp when we got together ...and his dad actually. BREAD DOES NOT GO IN THE FRIDGE!!!

quite partial to fridge chocolate though

BackforGood · 11/07/2021 00:11

No

SingingInTheShithouse · 11/07/2021 00:13

Usually, No.

But at the moment when it's humid, Yes. it goes mouldy more quickly & keeps longer in the fridge

SingingInTheShithouse · 11/07/2021 00:16

I freeze bread but I only use it for toast in the morning.

I have so many questions Confused

SingingInTheShithouse · 11/07/2021 00:17

Ignore me. I totally miss read that 🥴

MutteringDarkly · 11/07/2021 00:27

Yes. A small loaf then lasts us at least 7 days, if not longer.

Cupboard is for cans or dry goods in jars. Everything else goes in fridge or freezer.

JeansShirtJeansJacket · 11/07/2021 00:29

I live in the tropics and I still keep bread in the bread bin. I don't know anyone here who would put it in the fridge.

EL8888 · 11/07/2021 00:29

No!

Ellie56 · 11/07/2021 00:37

No because there is no room, but in warm weather it is probably a good idea, especially if the bread has come out of the freezer.

SirVixofVixHall · 11/07/2021 00:42

I have never in all my days seen bread in a fridge anywhere. Surely it goes all fridgified ? Cold, clammy and tainted by other foods in the fridge ? I suppose it wouldn’t pick up other flavours if it was in tupperware, but then it would be cold and damp and just WRONG, only suitable for toast.
I am shuddering at the mere thought of fridgy bread.

Fl0w3ry · 11/07/2021 00:44

No

pooonastick · 11/07/2021 00:58

Freezer. Hot country.

PRabbit · 11/07/2021 00:59

Yes because it prevents it going mouldy and stale. You probably think it goes stale faster in the fridge, but that’s because you’re confusing staleness and starch crystallisation. The bread may be stiff when it’s kept in the fridge, but that’s not because it’s stale - it’s due to crystallisation and you can reverse the stiffness by warming it.

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 11/07/2021 00:59

No!

It goes stale.

I only do it if I'm making bread and butter pudding because that's tastier with slightly stale bread

Heifer · 11/07/2021 01:07

No, that is why God created bread bins!

Jacketpotato84 · 11/07/2021 01:23

I get the debate on chocolate, ketchup, eggs or whatever but bread???
Never!

Miffyliffy · 11/07/2021 02:39
