For it was The Breakfast Club.

I was the perfect age for it when it came out, mid teens. OMG they GOT me! Their parents were arses too, they understood what it was like. Loved it my whole life.

Watched it again at 40 with teens and just thought "What a bunch of whining little shits" It is now my least favourite film of all time! It should have stayed in my memory as once you are the parent of the "misunderstood" teen you realise what an utter prat you were when you were 15!

I don't think the actual age gap in Dirty Dancing was massively relevant, more that he was very erm 'experienced' and she was very naive and child like on a family holiday with her parents and sister. I don't really see why Johnny was attracted to her really.

If she was having her sexual awakening with an 18 year old boy on holiday with his family then not really as problematic for me as a grown up. But that's not the film they were going for. Grin

PurpleParrotfish · 09/07/2021 23:01

Thiugh yes to thinking ‘contraception!’ when they have sex!

Sparklingbrook · 09/07/2021 23:02
@fiddliestofsticks I'm sure she was 16 or about to turn 16?
Admittedly it's ages since I watched it but right at the beginning of the film when they're driving up to the mountains, isn't there some kind of voice over thing by Baby that says "that was the summer I turned 16?" or something like that?
Could be wrong though, if 18 not bad but the fact he shagged about I wou;dn't be pleased at as a parent lol
Baby's Dad as a Doctor would surely be concerned about his daughter WRT STDs and pregnancy? He could see what a sleaze Johnny was.

TatianaBis · 09/07/2021 23:03

Sorry but my love for DD is undimmed.

Always fancied James Spader after PIP.

I found Breakfast Club a bit meh at the time. Ok but didn’t love it.

I don’t think My Beautiful Laundrette would stand a rewatch well.

There's that scene in Normal People where they go to other extremes and really graphically hammer the contraception/consent message home so to speak. There must be a middle ground.

@LemonFantaGin

Yes, the human caterpillar, no explanation needed.
Yep. Absolutely with you on that

Also The Cook The Thief His Wife and Her Lover. Amazing movie but bits too grotesque to watch again.

And Trainspotting = because of the sheet scene

lollipoprainbow · 09/07/2021 23:08

We need a brat pack thread for me the best films ever as an 80's girl. What about Class too and Oxford blues ?! Risky business.?!

TedImgoingmad · 09/07/2021 23:08

Secretary. Also starring James Spader, and Maggie Gyllenhaal. Grim.

littlebilliie · 09/07/2021 23:08

Grease

Quaggars · 09/07/2021 23:10

Oy you can all leave Pretty Woman alone, I still love that film even if I get she doesn't need to be saved by a man, blah blah lol
"I say who, I say when, I say where!" Grin

My absolute favourite is About Last Night. I love that film so much and could rewatch it over and over. I have it on DVD (box set St Elmo's, Breakfast Club and About Last night). Sadly I haven't had anything to play a DVD on for years...
EveningOverRooftops · 09/07/2021 23:12

@Youdiditanyway

Loved Dirty Dancing when I was about 11/12ish but obviously didn’t understand the connotations behind any of it. I thought her Dad was a controlling prick at the time but now I’m an adult and parent, I think he was trying to protect her and think Swayze’s character was an arsehole.

I agree that the human centipede doesn’t even need watching once Grin, so grim.

For me LOTR is totally pointless. DH would slay me for saying that but it’s literally 3 very long and very tedious films about a ring.

Gollum is the ultimate bridezilla
RickiTarr · 09/07/2021 23:12

Yes, the human caterpillar, no explanation needed.

Do you mean the human centipede?

😁😂

The Human Caterpillar sounds like it should be the spoof version. 😂

Seriously though, a friend recommended THC to me when it came out so I asked him what it was about. I think that conversation ended with backing slowly out of the room. Just WHY?

StorminaBcup · 09/07/2021 23:13

But the face Julia Roberts pulls on the stairs at the end though when she rescues him right back…… Grin

AcrossthePond55 · 09/07/2021 23:13

Apocalypse Now and Schindler's List. Both excellent films, both should be seen by everyone, but too upsetting (for different reasons) to rewatch.

As far as 'cool' films that didn't 'age' well for me it's "Fast Times at Ridgemont High". The male characters are pretty deplorable and the female characters are, well, pretty stupid.

Spudina · 09/07/2021 23:14

I love Secretary!

But I wouldn’t watch Malena, Come and See and The Human Centipede again.

StorminaBcup · 09/07/2021 23:14

The very hungry human caterpillar? Grin

Yikes Pretty Woman! Fun beautiful prostitute and her zany scatty pal. She’s looking for a father figure but he’s also a little boy lost and she models the moral high ground for him. What could be more heartwarming and endearing? Good thing she wasn’t plain, eh.

Quaggars · 09/07/2021 23:22

Oooh remembered another one!
I used to absolutely love Teen Witch, anyone remember that?!
Watched it so many times.
Rewatched recently and all the songs I thought was so cool (where her mate Polly I think she was called?) starts rapping Top That in the middle of the street to the cool kid she fancied (look how cool he is! You what, he's a dick, he well fancies himself lol)
that was pure cheeeeeese. Grin
Also the cheerleaders I Like Boys oh dear lawd no wonder she magicked one of them to push the ringleader into the pool Grin
Sorry, as you were, ahh memories

whynotwhatknot · 09/07/2021 23:22

Baby was definitely 16 im sure they say johnny is 27

its very problematic but the mjusic is great

Rummikub · 09/07/2021 23:23

Rita Sue and Bob too
Watched it as a teen
Now I couldn’t

Any film where you were on the side of the teenager
As a parent I’ve completely switched sides!

Magpie1976 · 09/07/2021 23:23

I used to love Dead Poets society. Bought the DVD to watch with the kids and we all cringed thru it. It was very underwhelming (altho the final scenes which I'd forgotten were disturbing). However we did enjoy Heather's, sleeping with the enemy and DD.

NomNomNominativeDeterminism · 09/07/2021 23:23

Please could someone confirm that Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is still a good film, or I will be sad.
