To take an iPad to a Nice Meal on Sunday?

EngSun · 09/07/2021 19:01

Football related, obviously.

We've got a very fancy day planned on sunday.

It's not changeable.

We will most likely be eating at kick off time, not quite sure of timings.

Even it we're not eating at that time, we're at the table till 9.30.

Wibu to take some means of watching the game?

I'm sure many of the other people in the room will have some means of following the game, so it would be impossible to hide from any scoring. I think it'd be impossible to just record it and watch it at home at 10.30ish.

We'll be discreet as possible, and obviously not the only people at the meal interested.

Wibu?

f

I anticipate @EngSun will be able to have the iPad angled away from other diners with the sound off and no drama.

MilBesos · 11/07/2021 12:31

It's Rude OP. You know it.

@mafted

Is anyone else kind of hoping for an "AIBU my fancy train experience is being ruined by people watching football on an iPad" Grin
I think all the people not watching the football should start one. It should start with the OP and her table, surreptitiously watching their iPads under the table on the Posh Dinner Train, then a roar of 'COME ON, ENGLAND!' escapes over the gentle tinkling of cutlery and polite conversation, then they rip open their formal dinner jackets and cocktail dresses to reveal England shirts, and a food fight ensues when the purse-lipped woman on the next table says she doesn't care whether it's an England goal or the second coming of Jesus Christ, could they pipe down so she can enjoy her Prawns Marie-Rose -- England win, and the OP and her table don't mind being escorted off the train by the British Transport Police because while they're overnighting in a cell, the singing of happy mobs of fans can be heard through the window.

I am hoping for a “I have just been asked to turn down Handmaids Tale because the people on the next table say the screaming is interfering with their enjoyment of the football”

I went to a wedding where the bride and groom were big rugby fans and organised a screening in a side-room of a big final (England v someone, I forget). Even though the bride had organised this, she didn't expect the WHOLE wedding party to squeeze in there and watch it start to finish. Made it feel like a pub, and she wasn't very happy in the end. The rest of the hugely expensive venue flowers etc. ended up like a bit of an afterthought. Not being rugby-mad I was embarrassed for her...and thought guests were rude not to realise.

I think you will fall out with people.

@LightAsTheBreeze

One thing that this thread has shown me is to never book one of these things as it may be full of judgy mumsnetters
Well, when we did a similar trip it was full of pleasant people having a lovely time. No plebs thinking we could ‘go hang’ for not watching a game on a screen.
Standrewsschool · 11/07/2021 21:06

Hope you’re having a lovely evening

Lockdownbear · 11/07/2021 21:07

@surfergrl that's really sad, at a friends wedding they clashed with a big football game. As soon as they came out the church the groom asked the wedding car driver to get the radio on, so they could hear while the photos were being taken.
But that's no wear near as disruptive as a screen.

Laaaaa · 11/07/2021 21:16

Did you take it

CrikeyPeg · 11/07/2021 21:27

Did you take it, and who's winning/won? In NZ, have no idea why this is game is such a Big Deal Grin

EngSun · 12/07/2021 09:23

Morn.

It was fine, meal was finished by 7.45.

There were 11 tables occupied in our carriage, 3 had laptops out, 2 had tablets, others were using phones, so our mini iPad was quite unobtrusive really.

When we reboarded train after a the destination break, one table were watching Wimbledon with the sound on.

The one table who weren't watching the football, were chatting quite contentedly amongst themselves and a little bit with the table opposite who had a laptop out.

It was a lovely atmosphere, added to the day really. We'd been on the train since 8am, so from 8om everyone was relaxed just drinking and chatting.

Glad you had a good time Op. Pity about the result but England did so well!

Etinox · 12/07/2021 11:59

Brilliant result! (unlike the football Sad)

Dyrne · 12/07/2021 12:28

Sounds like a great atmosphere OP, glad you enjoyed it! Key thing was not to impact others’ enjoyment, so if everyone was watching and the other table weren’t bothered, you did the right thing.

30degreesandmeltinghere · 12/07/2021 12:53

Just a bloody shame we lost..

I still think it's rude and rather sad. Just means many more people are prepared to be rude than I realised
nocoolnamesleft · 12/07/2021 18:47

Agreed. Still rude. Still sad.
