To take an iPad to a Nice Meal on Sunday?

EngSun · 09/07/2021 19:01

Football related, obviously.

We've got a very fancy day planned on sunday.

It's not changeable.

We will most likely be eating at kick off time, not quite sure of timings.

Even it we're not eating at that time, we're at the table till 9.30.

Wibu to take some means of watching the game?

I'm sure many of the other people in the room will have some means of following the game, so it would be impossible to hide from any scoring. I think it'd be impossible to just record it and watch it at home at 10.30ish.

We'll be discreet as possible, and obviously not the only people at the meal interested.

Wibu?

It would be rude in my opinion, but maybe I'm old fashioned. Personally, I wouldn't like it if someone whipped out an iPad to watch football (or anything at all), at an event I'd organised and invited them to. Still, everything seems to have to bow to the god that is football.

Pottedpalm · 10/07/2021 19:21

Is it an Orient Express type train trip? You will be eating all day if its like a trip we went on. Tables of 2 or 4 so it could possibly be ok, but others will be able to hear it.

MummyMayo1988 · 10/07/2021 19:28

I would literally divorce DH if he did this!
You ABU in my opinion.
We have a no phones policy at the table anyway. No excuses. Much less going to a fancy restaurant!

Heyyeahyouwiththesadface · 10/07/2021 19:52

@Hopdathelf

'Remember that fab day on the train, the food was amazing, and England won when we were pass by X!'

Or for people around them ‘Remember that day in the train, the food was amazing, but those ill-mannered people sat watching an iPad, and couldn’t contain themselves when England scored/sulked the whole time as England got thoroughly tonked by the Azure’.

Exactly. There is no way they won’t be reacting & a screen will in the peripheral vision of the diners across the way. I’d be furious to pay all that money & have other people sitting on their iPad.
thecapitalsunited · 10/07/2021 20:03

If I had paid a fortune for a special trip on a Pullman train say for my wedding anniversary I would be furious if the people on the next table or even further down the carriage were watching football on an iPad. Even if it’s on silent you will be cheering and wincing and slowly getting louder and louder until everyone in the coach might as well be watching. You will disturb other guests. I hope you can’t get a signal.

upsideoxide · 10/07/2021 20:17

Can't see what harm you'd do. Four adults/ two couples. You're not 20 blokes on a stag do in magaluf. You're not going to act like arseholes Or start singing football anthems and swearing at the ref.

Perfectly reasonable I think

Lokdok · 10/07/2021 20:29

God no!!! Anyone eating in a nice restaurant on Sunday at 8pm will be doing so to AVOID the football!! That would be awful and I expect you’d be chucked out.

ShitPoetryClub · 10/07/2021 20:34

My God, its a complete one off. We also have a no phones at the table rule but not when England are in the finals.
How can people be so prissy about it. Just wear your headphones and be discreet. You are good to even consider going. I would have cancelled. The only thing that I would consider more important is a medical emergency or possibly a crime in progress (but it would have to be a really serious one).

IrishCharm · 10/07/2021 20:44

@EngSun

Yes other couple happy with the screen.

The plan is to check the vibe of the day.

If others on the carriage appear to be watching it, then we will get our iPad out.

If no one is watching it, we'll be able to watch it on catch up without knowing the result. This is my preferred option.

I'll take iPad because there's no way I'm listening to others on the carriage happily enjoying it while we 4 don't have access to a screen.

Why ask here then??? Hmm
IrishCharm · 10/07/2021 20:46

Btw I would do exactly what you’ve said you’ll do - I just fail to see why you had to ask here, get the majority say it’s rude then post saying you’re doing it anyway - so what was the point?! Grin

yorkshirebird2382 · 10/07/2021 20:49

Do what you need to. You could read the comments here saying not to..... Then get there and being the only ones who haven't factored in a way on watching. Ask yourself this...... If they win and you weren't watching, how annoyed would you be?

Bangolads · 10/07/2021 20:50

Do it, it’s huge and very exciting - most people will be on the same page surely?!

nocoolnamesleft · 10/07/2021 21:02

If I were one of the other diners, I would be extremely annoyed, and the intrusiveness of it would significantly spoil my experience.

Bertiebiscuit · 10/07/2021 21:08

Ffs grow up if you really care that much about men kicking a ball around at least have the decency to cancel the event in good time - I would be furious if anyone behaved this way at a meal with me

Sheerdetermination · 10/07/2021 21:17

You won’t properly enjoy either the meal or the game. And it is rude.

safariboot · 10/07/2021 21:47

I think the views in the thread are a bit negative. Let's be honest, you won't be the only group who have this issue, and for anyone even a bit interested being cut off from the biggest match in years will itself spoil the day.

Obviously the train company have the say. They might well have something worked out to accommodate it. Or they might say that anyone caught so much as looking at their phone will be ejected at the next station Grin.

TheJade · 10/07/2021 22:14

For me It would depend who I was going with.

If it was hubby and I then yes, that would be appropriate although I’d use a phone as it’s smaller.

But it was dinner with mum then no. It would be rude and not appreciate xx

Nohomemadecandles · 10/07/2021 23:00

Why would you be oussed off at people on other tables having an impact?

Why can't people just do themselves and worry less about judging everyone else in the restaurant?

Lockdownbear · 10/07/2021 23:06

Why can't people just do themselves and worry less about judging everyone else in the restaurant?

Because its a very expensive train carriage. And regardless of how discreet the Op thinks they will be you can guarantee that the emotions involved will no keep them quiet fitting with the ambiance of the carriage.

HalzTangz · 10/07/2021 23:27

I doubt any other diner will be watching football on the Orient express. Most be will be there to enjoy and absorb the experience of being on the Orient express.

Seriously don't be rude, just record it and watch when you get home

Anitarest · 10/07/2021 23:33

IMO it would be rude, but even if you don’t take an iPad it sounds as if you’d constantly be tapping on your phones instead and reacting to whatever is going on so if other passengers aren’t football fans, you’ll spoil their trip. I don’t understand why you asked if you’ve already decided.
Happy I won’t be there.

LoobyLoo515 · 11/07/2021 01:39

Even with the sound off you obviously enjoy the footie so much you’ll make some kind of noise watching it. Aside of the fact you’ve checked with your party I still think it’s inappropriate and rude to do it in that kind of setting. If in a fast-food restaurant, yeah maybe, but I’m surprised you’d even consider it. Even being on phones is rude at any table, no matter who is around or nearby. Some things you just don’t do,

Glittersparkle76 · 11/07/2021 04:05

I see no issue at all!,it's possibly a day that will go down in History hopefully for the right reasons!,some of the replies saying its rude and inappropriate?,come on!!,some people really do need to lighten up and enjoy life a bit more and stop being so serious and stuck up their own arses.

Kalvinette · 11/07/2021 04:39

Meh this is the sort of thing I would cancel and too bad for the booking fee.
The other couple would probably be overjoyed if you did that. No matter how nice the place, who wants to go for a sit down meal when the entire rest of the country is watching this match?
You also won't be getting the most out of the train experience either.
FYI there is no way you won't know who won.

Why try and do both halfway, pick one option and go all in.

joystir59 · 11/07/2021 04:51

This is a once in a life time match. I would find a way of watching it if at all possible and all the staff serving your meal will be watching it when they aren't serving you.
