To take an iPad to a Nice Meal on Sunday?

EngSun · 09/07/2021 19:01

Football related, obviously.

We've got a very fancy day planned on sunday.

It's not changeable.

We will most likely be eating at kick off time, not quite sure of timings.

Even it we're not eating at that time, we're at the table till 9.30.

Wibu to take some means of watching the game?

I'm sure many of the other people in the room will have some means of following the game, so it would be impossible to hide from any scoring. I think it'd be impossible to just record it and watch it at home at 10.30ish.

We'll be discreet as possible, and obviously not the only people at the meal interested.

Wibu?

I expect half the people on the trip will either be doing the same or asking you the score. We are at a very fancy restaurant in Italy during the last World Cup. Italy were playing and there were 2 huge screens up. 1 in the restaurant and one in the kitchen. It was a great atmosphere.

walkoflifewoohoo · 10/07/2021 09:26

I'd be pissed off if someone was watching anything on a propped up iPad on the next table.

You don't go to an experience type place to watch tv

Lockdownbear · 10/07/2021 09:27

I suspect people will be keeping an eye on the score via phones but not sitting watching it.

People become emotional watching football start raising voices etc. A posh expensive train isn't the place for it.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 10/07/2021 09:35

They as a group might not be being rude to each other, but they'll be being extremely rude to other people in the carriage

I expect that's why OP wants to "check the vibe", though how they expect to know what everyone else wants beats me - unless there's some "reception thing" and they're planning to circulate, asking them all "Are you looking forward to the football?"

If so I suspect many will cringe about what's about to happen, and it'll only take one positive answer, or one fan loking at their phone, for it to become "Look, everyone's doing it!!" and the sound to be cranked up (and I've literally never met an avid fan who's content to watch it with the sound off; it's always "It's just this bit ..." and then on and on it goes, with "What's your problem? / Nobody else minds" tacked on if anyone objects)

Unfortunately, discretion and major football matches rarely go together

Hopeisnotastrategy · 10/07/2021 09:49

Extremely rude to other diners. Please do not do this.

warmeduppizza · 10/07/2021 10:28

Massively rude to the chefs and serving team to not give their efforts your full attention.

OP is the host, so it’s not rude to the other couple who may also want to watch.

OP is also a paying customer. If she wants to watch the match on an IPad then that’s her prerogative as long as she isn’t cheering etc.“

Rubbish. Good restaurants worldwide maintain certain standards. They don’t want customers with iPads, however much they may be paying. They would loose countless others.

ShortBacknSides · 10/07/2021 10:38

Totally rude. Don’t go if a game means that much to you.

Ohhyeahright · 10/07/2021 10:53

Let us know how you get on!

Why is my name in there?
Jangle33 · 10/07/2021 10:58

Very rude. I’d just not go if I’d rather watch football. Why should other diners have to deal with this!

“Why is my name in there?“

I don’t know. Inept c&p on my part, I fear.

My apologies.

GintyMcGinty · 10/07/2021 11:08

I think it's ok as long as you wear headphones

Lockdownbear · 10/07/2021 11:12

What about the other three at the table. And how do they mute themselves?

They themselves getting emotionally involved is the noisy bit and the bit disturbing to other people.

JSL52 · 10/07/2021 12:05

Rude

MrsDeeWhy · 10/07/2021 17:41

Really rude. If I’d paid a lot of money to go for a fancy meal, and someone had a iPad out on the table near me, I’d be pissed off. Just cancel it if you all want to watch it. Not everyone is in to football, and this is not a football related venue, or somewhere that shows sports.

The vast majority of the posts here say no. I’d listen to them.

paperandfireworks · 10/07/2021 17:54

Rude.

Mesoavocado · 10/07/2021 18:08

Exceptionally rude and disrespectful

But best of luck to Italy Wink

lovemelovemydogs · 10/07/2021 18:11

It’s your ‘do’, you paid, surely your friends are not completely oblivious to the football? Personally I would watch it on my phone but if you can’t then yes take the iPad. Just don’t cheer too loud and spoil it for those nearby - who are probably secretly just as keen as you.

annacondom · 10/07/2021 18:20

Postpone. Or let the other couple go without you. It's incredibly bad mannered.I don't see how you will hide your cheering from the other tables, unless you're in your own carriage, in which case the four of you could crane to see the screen, which seems daft and not very enjoyable. Either ignore it and watch it later, or watch it at home.

MrsPsmalls · 10/07/2021 18:25

Oh ffs of course you are going to watch it. As will everyone else on the train day trip. Most of whom will be regretting booking the trip. Take it. Share it round. You will be very popular and certainly won't be the only one.

MrsPsmalls · 10/07/2021 18:27

Disrespectful to the staff? Seriously? Do you not think they will be watching too?

Laaaaa · 10/07/2021 18:27

I done something like this recently and we were all spaced out, no one was in seats opposite

notanothertakeaway · 10/07/2021 18:42

I don't even like children on iPads in restaurants, far less adults

Pixxie7 · 10/07/2021 18:53

Is it the orient express? If so no way, have a bit of thought for other diners.
