School children arriving late on Monday due to Footie

This was doing the rounds on my social media today, I am a teacher, so Is it just me or is this a bad idea? Children have hardly been in school this year anyway. More importantly, I feel that it’s teaching our children the wrong life lesson. Surely, if you choose to stay up late then suck it up on Monday! You can’t be swanning in late on a Monday to work after a weekend of partying.... interested to know if it’s just me. For the record, I enjoy watching football!

It’s ridiculous and I agree with you .

Paddingtonthebear · 09/07/2021 17:57

It’s optional and it’s a one off. I don’t think it’s that a big deal and I can’t get worked up about it.

Sirzy · 09/07/2021 17:59

It’s a one off.

The fact it’s been a shit year makes the event even more special.

By letting children come in late they know most will be there. If they stick to the normal time then some will just stay off the whole day.

I don’t like football but even I can see why it’s been done

Angel2702 · 09/07/2021 18:01

It’s a one off, they let them come in late when it’s been new intake evening etc and that isn’t even that late. A lot of work places are also doing it so it has no baring on future work ethics. They are at primary school so have plenty of years ahead to learn about work life.

DixonD · 09/07/2021 18:01

It’s fine. It’s not like it’s every week!

Illstartexercisingtomorrow · 09/07/2021 18:01

Agree in principle with OP - if you choose to stay up late the night before school/work you still get up on time and be there. Not just stroll in when you feel like it.

3scape · 09/07/2021 18:01

That's hugely over the top. I don't think football fans appreciate that it's not the whole population and it's not mandatory and most people will prioritise their real lives.

Lefthousewithpooinhair · 09/07/2021 18:03

In my book this is a capitol idea!

  1. It lets everyone have a relaxed Monday
  2. It means there won’t be any issue letting the kids stay up to watch it. And EVERYONE will be watching it
  3. This is definitely a 1 off and it’s 55 years since England were in a final
  4. It’s coming home!
Starlightstarbright1 · 09/07/2021 18:03

My DS's school aren't doing late attendenace.. My DS year 9 has an importnat test ssecond lesson. 1st leasson one he hates so I am letting him go in late and get a late mark if he is asleep. I think the test results will have far more impact on his future than a late mark.

Overtired children don't learn a great deal in my experience.

fruitpastille · 09/07/2021 18:05

I wouldn't be worked up but it does seem unnecessary. I wouldn't mind a late start for work on Monday but it won't be happening.

Even if kids are up till midnight they could still get 8 hours sleep.

Memsnutter · 09/07/2021 18:07

LOL at them using it as an opportunity to learn about resilience and disappointment Grin

DancesWithTortoises · 09/07/2021 18:09

It's ridiculous. Thousands won't be watching it. Daft idea.

MyDcAreMarvel · 09/07/2021 18:09

This is children not adults, Attitudes like yours op are one of many reasons why I home educate.
Your view of education is so narrow.

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 09/07/2021 18:10

It's been 55 years since this happened!!!! Nit in most people's lifetimes. My dc will be staying up.

Muncher75 · 09/07/2021 18:10

EXACTLY @Memsnutter Grin

My DC's school have sent a message similar to this but I'll be working my regular hours so it's irrelevant. They will have an 8:45am start as usual.

Choice4567 · 09/07/2021 18:11

@Lefthousewithpooinhair not EVERYONE will be watching! 2 adults and 2 children here who aren’t. And I have to be in work at normal time so the children will be going in at normal time

That being said I have no objection to anyone using this if they need!

FictionalCharacter · 09/07/2021 18:12

“Talk about the importance of the National Anthem” - er, no, not in our house. The football is about the football. I wish schools didn’t get wanky about everything and shoehorn national anthems and bloody resilience into things instead of just letting us enjoy sport.

Whatinthelord · 09/07/2021 18:12

Erm I don’t think the extra hour or so off is a big deal overall. However it does strike me as a little inconsistent with schools often refusing to authorise things like time off for visiting family etc.

Figgygal · 09/07/2021 18:12

It’s nonsense
I’ll be at work for 8.30 dh is due in at 9.15 the kids will be at school as normal

Ilovemyhairbeingstroked · 09/07/2021 18:13

I don’t think secondary school kids should - they’re most likely up until that kind of time anyway . Primary school - yes . It’s a possible once in a lifetime event , look how much 1966 is talked about - even non football fans of the older generation acknowledge it . These kids have really missed out , so if they want to get excited let them . Also one hour late , on what is the last week of term for most aka a doss week - what’s the big deal .

m0therofdragons · 09/07/2021 18:13

It’s madness. I’ll be working Monday whatever Boris says so kids may go in tired but not late. Since when did primary kids sleep in after a late night anyway?

EdgeOfACoin · 09/07/2021 18:14

Our workplace has said that we can start work at 10:30 on Monday.

What on earth has it got to do with Boris?
