School children arriving late on Monday due to Footie

This was doing the rounds on my social media today, I am a teacher, so Is it just me or is this a bad idea? Children have hardly been in school this year anyway. More importantly, I feel that it’s teaching our children the wrong life lesson. Surely, if you choose to stay up late then suck it up on Monday! You can’t be swanning in late on a Monday to work after a weekend of partying.... interested to know if it’s just me. For the record, I enjoy watching football!
@Bas27 yes it does show inconsistency I agree
@Schrutesbeets yes it was from a primary school in my local area.
In that case, I suspect it is as I thought - to avoid young children being penalised for their parents tardiness (I suspect many will have booked the day off work).
Also to potentially avoid parents driving hungover!

Alonelonelylonersbadidea · 09/07/2021 19:00

I don't like football but even I am looking forward to watching it and cheering on England. I will cry when they win! And I'm not even English!

FlaminEckVera · 09/07/2021 19:02

@Demelza82

Stupid idea, reinforces the idea that having an interest in football is more important than an education and regardless of what schools will say, scummy parents will use it as an excuse on Monday now anyway now it's doing the rounds #racetothebottom
'Scummy parents?' WTAF? Confused

Having a bad day? Confused You sound very angry.

Ellmau · 09/07/2021 19:02

Why is it even on a Sunday?

Kokosrieksts · 09/07/2021 19:04

It’s one day, I think It’s great that kids will stay up and no point taking them in grumpy the next morning.

SamW98 · 09/07/2021 19:04

Its a couple of hours out of their whole education

I think its a nice gesture and allows younger kids to be able to stay up and watch without being shattered the next morning

Mine is 16 and already broken up so it doesn't affect him but I would let him stay up and have a lie in if he was younger

ButteringMyArse · 09/07/2021 19:07

By letting children come in late they know most will be there. If they stick to the normal time then some will just stay off the whole day.

Bingo.

The headteachers will also know full well that the late starts will be happening for a significant proportion of the kids, with or without their blessing. So of course some of them are going to try and work with that instead of against it.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 09/07/2021 19:07

Younger children (the ones who would be affected by staying up until past 10) don't generally sleep past their habitual wake time as a result of a single later night. They will wake anyway, this is just a stupid way to give hungover parents an extra hour in bed. Pointless and sends the wrong message to children that a football game takes priority over their education.

Kokosrieksts · 09/07/2021 19:08

Oh and by the way our milk man will be delivering Sunday afternoon instead of early hours on Monday morning which is great that they also get to enjoy the game.

ExhaustedFlamingo · 09/07/2021 19:08

@MyDcAreMarvel I completely agree. We also home educate and love the flexibility we're able to offer our children.

It's a one-off opportunity that will provide valuable learning experiences for children. If you don't like football then fine, but it is a big occasion and will be an amazing experience for anyone interested. Education should be holistic, not just confined to learning from a book. I think it's rather wonderful that a school is offering this kind of flexibility to families who want to use it.

toastantea · 09/07/2021 19:08

@newnortherner111

the Prime Minister has been trying to capitalise on the success so far of the England men's football team. A lovely distraction from the misogynistic liar's failings.

I still don't get it? I was asking the poster who said whatever Boris said she is working Monday so her kids will go in tired but not late.

lavenderlou · 09/07/2021 19:08

My school is giving the option of arrival at the normal time or an hour later. I will still have to be there at the normal time of course and my DC in breakfast club as usual.

cardibach · 09/07/2021 19:10

@Dinosaursdontgrowontrees

Our school is doing this. Sadly my children will have to go in 9 as normal as I have work but I think it’s a nice idea. It’s the last week of term they aren’t doing much anyway.
Aren’t doing much anyway? Really? Makes me wonder why I bother planning lessons to really engage tired students at this time of year if that’s what everyone thinks. I’ll just stick a film in, shall I? (Best not as there’ll be a load of complaints about that soon)
BlueSurfer · 09/07/2021 19:11

You can’t be swanning in late on a Monday to work after a weekend of partying. but there are a lot of employers who are allowing staff to swan in late on Monday morning.

It’s a one off. I think YABU.

TentTalk · 09/07/2021 19:15

I think it's great. My DC are too young/ no interest in football to have any idea what's going on but loads of kids will and it's really is a one off.

Education doesn't just happen at school.

Rosesareyellow · 09/07/2021 19:15

No. Stay up and watch by all means. But then deal with the tiredness. If you were working you wouldn’t get a free pass to come in late? And what about those who aren’t watching? Are they expected to turn up on time?

Roselilly36 · 09/07/2021 19:16

Once in 55 years? It’s acceptable surely. Many high st businesses are closing early to allow employees to watch the game. Most schools are saying parents can drop children in at usual time, or a little later if children want to stay up to watch the football. YABU OP.

daisypond · 09/07/2021 19:17

Surely most people have to go to work as normal on Monday, so most children will have to go to school as normal. Also, the punctuation errors and inaccurate facts about the football all add up to a school that is barely educating its pupils anyway, so a few hours fewer aren’t going to make much difference.

BoredZelda · 09/07/2021 19:17

A couple of hours late this close to the end of term? Nothing important will be missed.

Muncher75 · 09/07/2021 19:23

@Rosesareyellow yes, I’m still leaning towards your viewpoint.
I would rather have tired children in my class on Monday morning than half a class or less.
I get that it’s a ‘one off’ but what’s the problem with children being in school tired as a ‘one off’? Showing resilience, perseverance and understanding of the consequences of having a late night enjoying an historical event.

OP posts:
Quaggars · 09/07/2021 19:23

YANBU.
As someone else said, if you stay up late, fair enough, but you reap the consequences next day if there are any (not be told there, there you can have a little lie in to make sure you feel OK)
Maybe a cold compress too, and their feet rubbing?
Good life lesson and all that.

TinselTitsAndGlitteryBits · 09/07/2021 19:24

Gosh, what a bunch of misers.

It's a very rare occasion and a one off opportunity; I can't begrudge kids that after the year we've had.
Being an hour late to school is going to make no odds in the grand scheme of things - it's the summer holidays the week after.

Let people enjoy things for goodness sake. If you don't want your kids to participate then send them in at the normal time.

CassandraTrotter · 09/07/2021 19:26

I would rather have children arrive late to my class, than have over-the-drink-drive-limit parents drop them off on time.

Mrstamborineman · 09/07/2021 19:26

Cheer up misery guts

Popcornriver · 09/07/2021 19:28

I don't think an hour and a half is a big deal really. I'd imagine the parents opposed to the idea will have children there at usual time so it won't make any difference to their own children anyway. Just to add I don't really care for the football but think it's a nice gesture for the parents and kids that do.
