DH is an extremely well educated man.
Today I watched him put ironing water (our tap water is ridiculously hard) into the fabric softener dispenser.
He loathes the dishwasher for some reason maybe that’s the reason he has been known to put the pod things for dishes in the washing machine.

@MrsToothyBitch „pink for sink and blue for loo“ has been used the professional cleaning industry for decades.

I dont know what ironing water is and dont use fabric softener stuff , so am a bit baffled by thi thread

flyingsauce · 09/07/2021 23:05

Mine has used hair putty (in a pump dispenser) on his toothbrush, and spread mango chutney on his toast "I'm not too keen on that new marmalade"

Babynames2 · 09/07/2021 23:25

@ERFFER

I don’t understand that. Don’t you wash the bottles first and then cold water sterilise them, so they can be used straight from the steriliser?

Pliudev · 10/07/2021 00:15

This week I finally found out why the hand towel by my sink is often soaking. My DH claims it's impossible to dry himself after a shower with any other towel. I don't understand this but have bought him two hand towels specifically for this purpose.

Ratsindahouse · 10/07/2021 01:01

@MrsToothyBitch

DP is pretty good. I am the idiot who didn't realise which drawer was for fabric softener for about 3 months.

In my defence, I wasn't brought up to use it and didn't bother until I moved to a horribly hard water area. I would use a vinegar product but if I keep vinegar in, I drink it and I daren't take the risk. I never used ironing water til I moved either- my iron was fine before but seems happiest with ironing water now. Even our water boiled doesn't seem to suit it as well as the ironing water and it's cheaper than wrecking my iron.

You drink vinegar???
Quaggars · 10/07/2021 01:50

Fabric softener in irons Confused
I'm with your DH on this one
I'm like Confused
WTF lol
Surely it just takes water?!
New fangled space ship types one now on the market with their fancy ways I see must be now Grin

Maddison12 · 10/07/2021 02:29

Why all the faux naivety about ironing water? The name is pretty self explanatory, water that you put in an iron. It's sold in literally every supermarketHmm

RickiTarr · 10/07/2021 02:34

@PattyPan

I don’t use a tumble drier so vinegar stops my towels being crispy
There’s a salt & vinegar joke in there somewhere. Smile
RickiTarr · 10/07/2021 02:35

@Kazziek

Where can I get white vinegar? I don't think I've ever seen it! It sounds great though
In bulk from Amazon or in sensible quantities next to the malt vinegar in the supermarket.
GiantHaystacks2021 · 10/07/2021 02:39

Incompetent husbands.
Why do women put up with this?

FangsForTheMemory · 10/07/2021 03:52

White vinegar is also called spirit vinegar and you can get it in any supermarket. I just slosh a bit in the main detergent compartment. Ironing water is either distilled water that you can buy if you live in a hard water area or scented stuff you put in your iron —that is supposed to smell nice and doesn’t—

JuneJuly · 10/07/2021 04:23

Whilst doing a bit of research, a while back, to see if there is a cheaper alternative to using Dettol antibacterial laundry cleanser (specifically looking into white vinegar & general disinfectant) I read at least one article claiming that vinegar erodes the rubber hoses.

It has many uses in household cleaning but, after reading that, I opted not to use it in my washing machine as I didn't want it to cause any unseen/unchecked damage.

Carrotinthesky · 10/07/2021 04:28

Agree. I do the same. It also discourages that black mould stuff you sometimes get.

JasmineTeacup · 10/07/2021 07:33
**@sweeneytoddsrazor* if @ERFFER* is like me, she has colour codes cloths for different jobs. In my bathroom I have pink for the sink and blue for the loo (I deliberately made it rhyme to be helpful) to avoid the loo cloth doing the sink. Yellow is the kitchen.
I do this! I use the same rhyme, too. Pink for the sink, blue for the loo makes sense Smile

RubbishRobotFromTheDawnOfTime · 10/07/2021 07:38

Everyone asking why on earth you’d put disinfectant in the washing machine - because 30 or 40 degree water doesn’t kill all the germs.

MrsToothyBitch · 10/07/2021 11:38

@Nelia5 Well I didn't know that but it's hardly a surprise. It's an easy rhyme and I didn't claim copyright. I just made a point of saying I'd arranged my bathroom cleaning items in accordance with it because I found it helpful- sorry if my phrasing wasn't crystal clear. I am fully aware I'm not a poet. Sorry. Confused

MrsToothyBitch · 10/07/2021 11:44

@Ratsindahouse yes. I was a strange, vinegar loving child. Sip it & drown bread in it. Will try most types. For the sake of my teeth and what is left of my stomach lining, I don't keep any in. Prevention is better than ulcers. Even the smell of commercially made vinegar cleaning spray - which I would NEVER drink, makes me fancy some. I'm aware it's very, very odd. Blush

Neuts346 · 10/07/2021 11:51

Well everyday is a school day. I might try vinegar as I don’t like the idea of animal fat on my clothes and sometimes I do feel like fabric conditioner can be a bit slimy.
Why do people put dettol in the washer, is it for extremely sweaty stuff?

lazylinguist · 10/07/2021 12:17

Biological washing powder does though, I think. You're not even supposed to use it at higher temperatures, because that kills the enzymes which are there to kill the bacteria.

To actually have enough disinfectant to kill/damage all the pathogens you would need very large quantities of the disinfectant. Zoflora for example would be 10ml per 800ml of water, the average wash uses around 40l of water, so you would need around 500ml of zoflora per wash.
CoRhona · 10/07/2021 19:50

@neuts346 it's not household fish and chips vinegar, it's white vinegar Smile

Marriedatfirstyear · 11/07/2021 09:44

White vinegar not White wine vinegar.

My dad put an electric kettle on the hob. The ones where the cord is on the base not on the kettle. Sparks and smoke galore.

Marriedatfirstyear · 11/07/2021 10:06

I use white vinegar together with a dash of fabric softener. Works for me.
@PingusMistress, it's usually the middle little compartment in the drawer. *@Kazziek*
You can get white vinegar in big bottles at Robert dyas or local Hardware stores.
@flyingsauce, 🤣 At the chutney.
