DH is an extremely well educated man.
Today I watched him put ironing water (our tap water is ridiculously hard) into the fabric softener dispenser.
He loathes the dishwasher for some reason maybe that’s the reason he has been known to put the pod things for dishes in the washing machine.

What is ironing water?

TrixieMixie · 09/07/2021 17:36

White vinegar instead of Zoflora is a good idea - it keeps whites white and stops silk getting that dull grey coating it sometimes acquires.

Lincslady53 · 09/07/2021 17:49

He is male. He is hoping you call him all names under the sun and don't let him do those jobs anymore.

BackBoiler · 09/07/2021 18:22

My DH despairs at my dishwasher loading! I don't even try anymore!

fourandnomore · 09/07/2021 18:47

For those of you saying that your clothes have a greasy feeling it is because most fabric conditioners have animal fat in them. Smol do one that doesn’t have it in. I don’t use it as it’s always irritated my skin and I find scent overwhelming but I must try the white vinegar thing for my almost teenager’s stinky sportswear - thanks for the tip!

@RaindropsOnRosie

DH uses a capful of white vinegar instead of zoflora in our washing. He also regularly runs the dishwasher without a pod.
You put Zoflora in your washing machine?!
AutistGoth · 09/07/2021 19:03

@fourandnomore Bicarbonate of soda (available from supermarkets and pharmacies, Holland and Barrett too) might be good there.

Place the pungent clothes into the machine, sprinkle half a tablespoonful on top of them and ordinary washing powder and vinegar in the drawer compartment. The bicarb will help neutralise the offending stink. Smile

Thank you! I have a load on with vinegar right now...

Fab, thank you - have got a load of bicarb at the ready AutistGoth great tip Smile

@BIWI

Are these men this hopeless at work as well? Or do they do this 'learned helplessness' only at home?
This is exactly what I always wonder!! How can they be functional and capable in their chosen job roles/careers yet so bloody useless and stupid at home?! Baffles me!
sweeneytoddsrazor · 09/07/2021 19:16

Zoflora really is the work of Satan. Vile stuff.

We just use the pods for washing now as nobody could seem to understand that concentrated means you need less of it. DH has used dog shampoo a few times instead of normal stuff after I bathed the dog and forgot to put it away.

Roughasabadgersbum · 09/07/2021 19:40

I've been putting the fabric conditioner in the wrong part of the tray for years!!
Every day's a school day! Thanks MNetters

Unreasonabubble · 09/07/2021 19:42

Have you been drinking? Wine If so, can I have some as your opening post did not quite make sense.

PingusMistress · 09/07/2021 20:04

Where do you put the vinegar? In the fabric softener compartment?

(Desperately hoping this might un-ryvita my crispy towels...)

zucchinieggplant · 09/07/2021 20:27

I've asked DH to wash veg before and caught him preparing a bowl of water complete with washing up liquid and sponge.

Gingenius · 09/07/2021 20:32

@CustardySergeant sorry for the confusion in my house we use flannels for cleaning people and ‘sponges’ (the yellow and green scrubbing ones) for bleaching bath/ toilet etc…. (Well at least I do…)

MrsToothyBitch · 09/07/2021 21:01

DP is pretty good. I am the idiot who didn't realise which drawer was for fabric softener for about 3 months.

In my defence, I wasn't brought up to use it and didn't bother until I moved to a horribly hard water area. I would use a vinegar product but if I keep vinegar in, I drink it and I daren't take the risk. I never used ironing water til I moved either- my iron was fine before but seems happiest with ironing water now. Even our water boiled doesn't seem to suit it as well as the ironing water and it's cheaper than wrecking my iron.

Colour coded cloths??

Youarenothere · 09/07/2021 21:16

DH does most of the cleaning so can’t really nitpick but for some reason he can’t tell the difference between microfibre cloths used for cleaning and my beautiful white fluffy flannels

MrsToothyBitch · 09/07/2021 21:18

@sweeneytoddsrazor if @ERFFER is like me, she has colour codes cloths for different jobs. In my bathroom I have pink for the sink and blue for the loo (I deliberately made it rhyme to be helpful) to avoid the loo cloth doing the sink. Yellow is the kitchen.

Kazziek · 09/07/2021 21:24

Where can I get white vinegar? I don't think I've ever seen it! It sounds great though

lazylinguist · 09/07/2021 22:03

The white vinegar is great - it softens the clothes like fabric conditioner does, but without the cloying smell and coated feel. I add a few dropsof lavender oil with it into the conditioner section and it smells lovely!
