To be enjoying the Euros, to enjoy international football, and to be happy that England are in the final?

According to other threads on MN I should be hanging my boring head in shame and hating the football.

But, I love it! I love an international football tournament, and I'm loving this one! I proudly support our national team, I think they've shown great character, skill and hard work, and - OMG - I also like the Three Lions song!

I feel bad for other teams who have worked hard and lost, but them's the breaks. It doesn't stop me being excited for the final!!

Northern Ireland uses God Save the Queen too - when England and NI last played each other, the national anthem was played twice!

x2boys · 09/07/2021 19:56

Yeah I agree with that @Samw98 GSTQ has to be the most boring anthem out there 🤣

And now Gareth Southgate has dared to say that England is a great nation. Oh dear, the doomsayers won't like that!

"We are always looking at the negatives of our own country and yet we have got so much to be proud of and so much talent coming through in all industries really"

I think he's great. What a strong, resilient, positive man he is and a fabulous role model to show that just because something didn't go your way in the past, it doesn't;t have to define your future.

I will feel so proud to see Harry Kane lift the trophy tomorrow night but, even if we fall at the final hurdle, Gareth and the boys of done the nation proud and given us a much needed lift after such a shit 18 months

My team got promoted a while ago and we had a garden celebration party. Neighbour complained about the noise and was disgusted when they found out it was a football celebration as they "hate football and we're sick of constantly hearing about it".
Same neighbour is currently decorating their garden for their own euro final party. Hired a massive tele, making banners, the lot. They do think we are playing Spain though which is piss funny in itself Grin

lazylinguist · 10/07/2021 09:46

YANBU. And as you can see by the vote, MN doesn't all think football is stupid. I don't normally follow football at all, but I've watched the England matches and was really excited by the semi. There is nothing at all wrong with getting carried along with the excitement of big international sporting events.

EnjoyingTheSilence · 10/07/2021 09:47

@Nitgel I’m loving that England is in the final, will be watching and cheating them on and really really want them to win but rugby is still better 🤣

EnjoyingTheSilence · 10/07/2021 09:47

Cheering not cheating!!!!!

I can see them all now, desperately hoping that England lose. Faces like slapped arses, the lot of them.

I had a big birthday last week end. Booked a meal out early so we could be back to watch the game. Tested positive for Covid a few days later despite being double vaccinated... The thought of us winning is getting me through!! Roll on Sunday!

YANBU. I have loved every minute of the euros and am so excited England are in the final. There's such a sense of excitement everywhere and I'll be sorry when it's over. It's also been a lovely distraction from COVID doom and gloom

HazelBite · 11/07/2021 09:49

If I were to climb the Oak tree in my garden (unlikely I am in my 60's) I can see the hotel where the players are staying prior to the game and I could wave and shout my best wishes to them.
DH has said he thinks this would be excessive Hmm

OP, plenty of us will be cheering for England. I'm not going to let other fans ruin them for me.

I won't be too upset if Italy win though. I'm just happy that Southgate has got England into a final.

Indeed, being English I would be disappointed if England didn't win, but either way the best team on the night will win.
ThursdayWeld · 11/07/2021 12:58

Yay!! It's an amazing accomplishment by both teams. I did feel a bit gutted for Denmark not getting to the final, but that's the way the draw/tournament structure went.

PhilSwagielka · 11/07/2021 13:03

I was 12 when Euro '96 happened and I cried my eyes out when Southgate missed that penalty. I felt so sad for him. But he's got a very healthy attitude to not letting it define him.

This is also one of the most likeable squads we've had in years, and I like how it's not all ESL/Big 6 players - Leeds, West Ham, Everton and Villa are represented too, for instance. I went off England a bit when all those arrogant golden generation players were in the squad. I don't get this feeling with the current squad. They actually want to play for each other.

PhilSwagielka · 11/07/2021 13:06

Also: I voted Remain and I'm probably to the left of a lot of MN posters. I'm still hoping England win tonight and have been following the team throughout the tournament.

DaphneDeloresMoorhead · 11/07/2021 13:10

I don't like football; DH is working tonight to police the fallout. Good for the team they got through and hopefully it won't cause too many issues with drunk louts spoiling what ought to be an enjoyable evening.

Dd are taking advantage of the inevitable quiet to go and play mini golf, I just hope loads of other disinterested people haven't had the same idea !

DaphneDeloresMoorhead · 11/07/2021 13:13

and to make it clear yes I hope we win, I just don't want to watch the match. In the same way I imagine that many people that don't watch tennis were pleased when Andy Murray won Wimbledon but would have had no interest in watching the match. If we win I'm sure I'll watch the end of it on replay. We don't have a TV either so watching it would be tricky !

gabsdot45 · 11/07/2021 13:16

I've really enjoyed the Euros too. I'm Irish, in Ireland and in some ways it's good not having the Irish team there as the coverage has been very unbiased. Rte have shown every game and the commentary and punditry has been excellent.
I'm torn by who to support tonight. I have no connection to Italy and I don't mind seeing England doing well but they are definitely not one of the 2 best teams in the tournament. They had a fairly easy run and don't play entertaining football.
However I will be happy to see England win if that happens.
Good luck.
