Bun fight for Monday off work

229 replies

Upamountain43 · 08/07/2021 08:14

I wonder how many people are grovelling at their boss right now to get Monday off work. Just in case of the need for hangover recovery time.

Calling in a sickie is not going to work on Monday - unless your boss beats you to it and calls in first of course.

Pretty sure most adults are not in bed any earlier than the end of the match anyway Grin. Why would anyone be specially tired, unless they decide to get absolutely drunk?

parents are used to be up half the night! (painful as it is)

I was 13 in 1966, I remember we won, I remember we played West Germany, I remember it went to extra time and then penalties

it didn't go to penalties in 1966

ineedaholidaynow · 08/07/2021 10:28

Wonder how many drunk drivers there will be on Monday morning

Upamountain43 · 08/07/2021 10:30

Wow there is a few right miserable people around. Such a lot of snobbery about liking football and getting a bit drunk to celebrate a once in a lifetime occasion.

If you have no interest in football then why make any comment about it - i cannot remember the last time i spoke about cricket or cars or nail salons or bloody Megan and Harry - things i have no interest in.

I also guess a lot of you have never been to one of this big major occasions - i go to a lot of football and a lot of gigs and often feel like crap the following day whether i have been drinking or not. It the come down from adrenaline - the late night - often we do not get back until 2/3am - and once home you can be too wired to sleep for a couple more hours.

I think those of you putting your children into bed need to have a long think about this - this could be their one and only time to see this and they may not appreciate missing it and having no memories to share for the rest of their lives for absolutely no good reason. If they stay up, get fed up and go to bed, so what - at least give them the chance to experience this major national event.

@Yellowcrockpot Ignore my previous post, I've just thought that my father dying two months after the 1966 victory probably took priority so my perspective might not be very useful.

I suppose that if you are a football fan, watching the game (plus extra time etc) will give you quite an adrenalin rush, so most fans wont be able to just switch off the TV and their brain at dot on 11.30 and go to sleep

@JesusInTheCabbageVan

I'm in Wales. We're teaming up with Scotland and NI to mount an invasion of England and coup first thing Monday morning. But I'm not supposed to mention that. Wink

@Aroundtheworldin80moves

Do you think Primary Teachers will expect any sense out of the kids on Monday?
My OH is a primary teacher and I think he's hoping the kids will be too tired to notice how knackered he'll be!
QuestionableMouse · 08/07/2021 10:33

@Canigooutyet

What time do people normally go to bed if the match is going to wipe them out the next day?
It's not the match, it's the celebration or commiserations that'll cause issues.
onlyhereforthecake · 08/07/2021 10:33

Oh you started well but you are loosing me now. No need for that patronising twaddle. Yes, we have been to "major occasions", but maybe we are more used to them than you are so find them easier to handle and not suffer the following day?

having no memories to share for the rest of their lives
seriously Hmm
It's a football match, what the heck are you on about.

ancientgran · 08/07/2021 10:34

@igelkott2021 Thanks for the info as per my later post I had other rather more important things going on in 1966 so it obviously wasn't that big a deal for me.

MargaretThursday · 08/07/2021 10:35

I don't think it's really about people needing to get absolutely drunk and face a massive hangover. It's simply about being able to enjoy the evening without the thought of getting up for work the next day.
I'm not into football at all, so I'll probably say to the chap who normally opens up on Monday that I'll do it. I'll watch the match, but be able to get to bed fairly quickly afterwards. He'll want to see the post-mortem discussions etc. That way he doesn't have to worry about being in the next morning.

ancientgran · 08/07/2021 10:35

That's a good point, worrying in fact.
marriednotdead · 08/07/2021 10:36

@Yellowcrockpot

I was thinking of putting DC to bed at normal time, now I'm questioning if he will be missing out on a potentially historic event that in years to come he won't have any memories of... because "mum put me to bed on time" Grin
I did this when Liverpool were in the European cup final in 2005- DS was 8 at the time. His dad was at the game in Istanbul and they won. He’s never forgotten or forgiven me Grin

For this reason, I would suggest allowing it- I will cope with a tired 7 year old DGS on Monday!

Loudestcat14 · 08/07/2021 10:37

onlyhereforthecake Why are you bothering to comment on a thread about football when you clearly don't like it and look down your nose at football fans? Go and be a party pooper somewhere else, some of us are really excited and it IS a massive deal in terms of sporting history.

redtshirt50 · 08/07/2021 10:38

Loads of 'cool' workplaces are letting people start late on Monday.

@igelkott2021 An earlier kick-off time would be awful for people who don't finish work until 5/6 though (unless their work let them finish early).

LindaEllen · 08/07/2021 10:40

@BarbaraofSeville

I'm always surprised that so many people expect to be so wiped out by a one off slightly later than normal bedtime and perhaps a few drinks.

Have an afternoon nap if you're so worried about being tired the next day.

I think you're vastly underestimating the kind of night people have planned here!

Slightly later than normal and a few drinks will be a HUGE understatement I'm afraid!

IntermittentParps · 08/07/2021 10:40

That's a bit overdramatic Grin

Crankley · 08/07/2021 10:44

I was 13 in 1966, I remember we won, I remember we played West Germany, I remember it went to extra time and then penalties.

I lived in Germany at the time and watched England beat Germany with about 15 Germans. They were not amused Grin

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 08/07/2021 10:45

@Lipsandlashes Grin I hear Mark Drakeford is going for full Braveheart.

BlueLobelia · 08/07/2021 10:45

I thought that about drunk drivers this morning and wondered if I would see more police out.

I have no interest in football. But I am enjoying how excited and happy everyone is. On the school run two little boys walked past us and I heard this snippet ' ... and then for the second goal i was SO excited...'

Our local radio station is lobbying for a Bank Holiday on Monday. I'd love that (although sorry for those who cannot take the time off). These sorts of things just give people a lift and are things we can remember for decades. I recall my sailing mad dad waking me up just before the finish when Australia won the America's cup to say I had to watch history. I have no interest in sailing either, but I very well remember the sense of joy and occasion.

huh?!

Maybe read my posts before embarrassing yourself?

The OP update is ridiculous, I stand by that.

MotionActivatedDog · 08/07/2021 10:56

I don’t really understand why anyone would need a day off after watching (not playing in) a football match.

BrownEyedGirl80 · 08/07/2021 10:58

Ds7 is going bed at normal time.Its hard enough getting him out of bed as it is never mind with a really late night before hand.

I'm a big believer in days off. State-sanctioned days off are even better. Grin
Loudestcat14 · 08/07/2021 10:59

Sorry onlyhereforthecake, holding my hands up to that one! I only saw your last comment and I've let myself be wound up by another thread slagging off football fans and rant-posted before reading the rest of the thread. My bad.
