How many women would choose the men’s facilities or the mixed facilities if there was a choice ?

Given there seems to be some support for the notion that we can disregard safety issues , i would be interested to know how many of us would choose the option of men’s or mixed sex facilities if there are single sex available, and if so why?
YANBU = this is a really good idea,
YABU = I won’t support such a potentially dangerous idea

With all the upskirting and other generally expected unacceptable male behaviours. With a history of repeated stranger sexual assaults by men. With the option to choose given my anxiety, I choose women only spaces. Not than men don't 0also invade those too.

Not all men are sexual abusers, but most sexual abusers are men.

Not all men are violent but most violence is conducted by men.

Or I am just on another planet.

NoGenderPleaseImBritish · 06/07/2021 13:08

I think OP if you had worded this

"How many women would choose the mixed facilities for their 12 year old daughter?" You would have a very different response.

I don't believe for a second, that most women would tell their 12 year old to use the mixed facilities alone because the queue is shorter. I just don't. They might go with her in an emergency but they wouldn't send her in alone.

I think being a woman requires a certain amount of acceptance of risk that we take every day so some of us just take the easier option. I would use the men's if I was desperate (and I have done). But would I fuck send DD in on her own. That's because I accept the risk for myself but understand that I am not happy for that risk to be passed to my daughter.

motogogo · 06/07/2021 13:08

Doesn't bother me if they are mixed. My dd is used to being in a male dominated environment and has no issues with mixed changing etc, the lads also seem to be completely accepting of their female colleagues and got past the "woman sleeping in my tent, cabin, changing near me" really quickly, she says it's a non issue.

I'm not saying there's never a case for single sex, but more that as a default it's not always needed eg a bank of 6 individual toilets onto a corridor (each toilet contains a wash basin, disposal etc) is perfectly safe and makes more sense in some places than 3 women and 3 men's.

I accept not everyone shares my opinions but I can only go from experience. I'm sure often in a very male dominated environment, and feel incredibly safe.

thevassal · 06/07/2021 13:08

It depends. I can go to two local gyms near me. One has single sex changing rooms which are basically just open plan rooms, one for male, one for female. The other has a mixed sex 'changing village' with all cubicles, designed with proper doors (rather than a curtain), bars over the top so people can't stand on the bench to look over, etc. (although you probably could put a phone over/under if you were determined to be creepy!)
Of those options I prefer the second because I prefer getting changed in a cubicle with a bit of privacy. The absolute ideal would be a changing village with sections/rooms for male/female/other (trans people, those who aren't bothered, dads with daughters and mums with sons etc) but I've never seen that!

With toilets, again I prefer the ones which are fully enclosed cubicles (with sink etc). I am equally happy if they are male/female/mixed because there is only one person in there at a time. Other than that I prefer the usual male/female separate rooms with individual cubicles such as you see in most supermarkets, services, etc. I would not be happy personally to have 'mixed' toilets in the way they are now building them in schools with individual cubicles with a gap between top and bottom, with only the toilets in, in a joint area, sharing sinks etc.

So a bit mixed. I prefer male/female and would be unlikely to use the males unless in an emergency, however if there are proper gender neutral facilities rather than the cut price version that doesn't match the health and safety definition then I'm more than happy to use those and can see how they benefit lots of different people/family combos.

Eskarina1 · 06/07/2021 13:08

Considering the pub toilets near me, the safest feeling ones are mixed. The ladies are often isolated down long corridors, the mixed ones happen to be central and relatively well used.

Changing room wise, our swimming baths has a large mixed cubicle only changing room and group changing rooms for women and men. I exclusively use the mixed ones. I want a cubicle. I do not care who is in the cubicle next to me and it's busy so that anyone peering under doors would be picked up on.

Xoxoxoxoxoxox · 06/07/2021 13:12

When I have had to go into mixed facilities (portaloo's recently) I haven't liked it as they smelt awful and more wee sprayed everywhere.

Prett also have mixed loo's (Epsom) and didn't particularly like sharing washbasin area with a man as it was an enlosed area. By the look on the man's face he didn't particularly like it either!

Adirondack · 06/07/2021 13:15

I do not want to use changing rooms, toilets or spas alongside anyone who has a penis. Ever.

TheGoogleMum · 06/07/2021 13:16

I'm happy for a mixed sex toilet to exist in addition to male and female. I would use the women's though probably!

Pedalpushers · 06/07/2021 13:16

I would prefer a mixed changing room with enclosed cubicles to a single sex one with women expected to get naked in front of each other and only the cramped toilet for privacy, which is a situation I've seen many a time at swimming pools.

Many men have told me they really don't like women walking into their toilets while they're going at a urinal, and how many of them seem to think it's hilarious to do so.

I've never felt uncomfortable in a mixed sex bathroom.

galaxyfairy · 06/07/2021 13:18

Shortest queue here too. Your poll question is pretty biased and extreme OP!

SpindleWhorl · 06/07/2021 13:18

What everyone seems to be saying is that they want safety, privacy, and not to have to queue for fucking ages.

So more female toilets, basically, built to a decent standard, compliant with building regs and the law.

Mixed bogs to be used as a last resort when either desperate or worried about using isolated 'afterthought' Ladies 🚺 in older buildings.

Hmmm no, I really just don't care that much! If all toilets were built to a decent standard and fully closed off, I'd still happily use mixed facilities.

You are AIBU for posting this in AIBU.

PoorFanjo · 06/07/2021 13:24

There's a pub near me who had single cubicles, men's on the left and women's on the right. When covid happened they made the toilets unisex and 100% of women still go to the right. So much so that they've made them single sex again, the amount of piss on the floor and seat of the men's Envy

NoPostToday · 06/07/2021 13:25

Unisex toilet cubicles and mixed (dressed) saunas are hardly a new invention.

TheBurmundseyIndustrialEstate · 06/07/2021 13:25

Unisex facilities have a far higher likelihood of sex pest crimes etc than singlesex facilities and I think we should hang onto our single sex provision.

Sillyduckseverywhere · 06/07/2021 13:28

We now have enclosed unisex at work.
Both are now constantly busy with the men having leisurely 20 minute shits. (A few male friends have admitted to wanking at work too. Nice. Wonder where they do that?)
Both constantly stink to high heaven, both now have piss on the floor, the lady bins are full of empty loo rolls...
I wish we'd kept it single sex Sad

MangoBiscuit · 06/07/2021 13:30

I think I would prefer it if facilities were properly gender and sex neutral. So anywhere you need to remove clothing needs to have floor to ceiling walls and lockable doors. All toilets cubicles have sanitary bins. Facilities are properly ventilated, regularly cleaned, and either regular staff presence or cameras in communal areas for security.

I would not mind sharing communal areas (sinks, wall of lockers etc) with either sex. I don't mind having mixed sex access to single occupancy areas off of communal areas (but please, please have decent ventilation!)

But I'm not happy about males being allowed into somewhere they can see me undressed, be that a shower, or a toilet cubicle. And that includes cameras under doors.

lap90 · 06/07/2021 13:30

I soon realised that the mixed toilets at my old uni were cleaner than the ladies so much preferred using them.

NoPostToday · 06/07/2021 13:30

Best practice is to have single sex female, single sex male, unisex. I think unisex is useful for mothers taking their son to the toilet or dads taking their daughter to the toilet.

Coulddowithanap · 06/07/2021 13:31

We have unisex facilities at work, I still find myself using the one that used to be the ladies as that is one single cubicle and the mens is several cubicles in one room. Weirdly I think thats because I wouldn't want to embarrase them if I'm in there when they are (there are shower cubicals as well as toilets).

SeasonFinale · 06/07/2021 13:36

I frequently use the mens loos at Wembley during concerts because are they are much emptier and I can get in and out.

AwaAnBileYerHeid · 06/07/2021 13:42

I wouldn't use the male toilets, I'd wait for the female, even if there was a large queue.

helpfulperson · 06/07/2021 13:48

Toilets I'm happy to use mixed. Changing rooms I'd prefer a cubicle next to a man in a cubicle than a womens only space with no cubicles. Spas I dont mind being naked and mixed sex because that's how they are in most of the hotels I go to on holiday to in germany, austria, netherlands and Scandinavia.

CoalCraft · 06/07/2021 13:51

Even hospital wards can and should have single occupancy facilities, with en suites. This is the situation at our local NHS hospital and it's fine. Wouldn't give a damn of a ward was mixed or single when everyone keeps to their own private space anyway.

Prisons are a very difficult one. Otherwise just have single occupancy spaces for everything.

OP, what are you on about with freemasons and brothels?? I don't think either establishment is too bothered by guidelines on the matter anyway.
